Safe Driving Inducement Effect Analysis of Smart Delineator through Driving Simulation Evaluation (도로 주행 시뮬레이션 평가를 통한 스마트 델리네이터의 안전운전 유도 효과분석)

  • Assuming a completed Smart Highway road & communication environment that allows real-time information collection and transmission of road traffic condition ahead, the purpose of this study is to develop a plan for inducing a network-level safe driving pattern by providing road traffic condition and safety information to multiple drivers through a road information provision device. In this study, the device with a function that displays different colors according to the hazard level to the existing delineator has been named 'Smart Delineator'. Smart Delineator is a device that provides not only alignment information but also safety information for drivers to receive real-time warning information and intuitively recognize road traffic condition ahead so that drivers can respond. To examine the effects of safety driving inducement level on drivers, a simulation test was conducted using driving simulator as well as a satisfaction survey. The result showed that the Smart Delineator was able to identify the location of occurrence and affecting driving according pattern, either adhering to recommended speed or reducing speed according to the pre-defined hazard level.

The Relationship between Subjective Driving Workload and Effects of PG Technology (주관적 운전부하 수준과 PG기법 적용효과의 관계)

  • The main objective of this study is two-fold: 1) to analyze the effect of PG technology application on road user's satisfaction and driving speed, and 2) to investigate the relationship between driver's subjective workload level and their reactions related to the PG technology application. Based on the result of field observation, the experimental scenario for driving simulation study was prepared. The experimental results showed that drivers were more satisfied to the road condition with PG technology applied, and even the pattern of speed reduction was more stable than control condition. The pattern of speed reduction along driver's subjective driving workload level were slightly different by physical road condition, and road user's satisfaction was revealed to be negatively correlated with their subjective driving workload level. This result indicates that depending on situation and driver characteristic, information for the drivers could be nothing more than nuisance that just distracts drivers. In order to facilitate the implementation of PG technology in Korea, further study on related human factors, especially for those who are weak in traffic situations, is recommended.

  • A sound-masking technique was applied to the urban public spaces with multiple noises in order to reduce the annoyance of the construction and traffic noise. In addition, the effects of masking system were investigated in order to improve the soundscape. In several urban spaces, building construction and nearby road traffic noise were recorded using a head and torso simulator and sound quality (SQ) system which specifies the spectral and temporal aspects of the noises. The sound-masking system which consists of the distributed speakers and control devices was applied to the boundaries of the construction sites. Synthesized masking sounds were produced with consideration of SQ characteristics of the multiple noise. Subjective evaluations on the soundscape were conducted to verify effectiveness of the system under the conditions with and without the masker sounds.

  • Fluent ver.6.3 is used as CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulator to predict the performance of snow-melting system by geothermal pipes energy. As the results of this simulation, it is clearly shown that $50^{\circ}C$ of working fluid in to geothermal evaluated as more effect comparing to $45^{\circ}C$ of working fluid. The Surface temperature is come to $5^{\circ}C$ at 1m/s speed and $50^{\circ}C$ temperature of the working fluid.

  • Since real road experiments have many restrictions, a multi-vehicle traffic simulator can be an effective tool to develop and evaluate fully automated driving systems. This paper presents multi-vehicle environment simulation tool to develop and evaluate motorway automated driving systems. The proposed simulation tool consists of following two main parts: surrounding vehicle model and environment sensor model. The surrounding vehicle model is designed to quickly generate rational complex traffic situations of motorway. The environment sensor model depicts uncertainty of environment sensor. As a result, various traffic situations with uncertainty of environment sensor can be proposed by the multi-vehicle environment simulation tool. An application to automated driving system has been conducted. A lane changing algorithm is evaluated by performance indexes from the multi-vehicle environment simulation tool.

  • Real time driver's respiration monitoring method for detecting driver's drowsiness is investigated. The sensor to obtain driver's respiration signal was a piezoelectric pressure sensor attached at the abdominal region of the seat belt. The resistance of the pressure sensor was changed according to the pressure applied to the seat belt due to the driver's respiration. Monitoring driver's respiration was carried out by driving on the virtual road in a driving simulator from Cheonan to Seoul and monitoring results were compared to the PELCLOS. Experiment results show that the driver's respiration signal can be used for detecting driver's drowsiness.

  • The purpose of this paper is to estimate the fire safety in tunnels with bi-directional and/or congested unidirectional traffic where there may be people on both sides of the fire. Therefore, the spread and movement of smoke are simulated by Fire Dynamic Simulator code under different ventilation systems, longitudinal, semi-transverse, large port exhaust system. And as quantitative risk index, FED (Fractional Effective Dose) for each ventilation system are calculated and compared by existed code developed previous research.

  • A new design procedure for micro cellular coverage prediction is presented here on this paper, which contains a new propagation analysis algorithm based on processing of vector data representing roads and buildings which mainly affect the propagation phenomena in micro-cell environments. The propagation analysis algorithm presented here has been developed to aim at the practical application for micro-cellular systems such as PCS or CE-2. As all the vectors used here are of closed poly lines, i.e., polygons, a simplified ray path search technique can be developed not only to determine if the calculation points are on the road polygons and but also to calculate the amount of blockage by buildings. The result shows a capability of predicting path loss with an RMS error of 5dB or lower.

Evaluation of a Traffic Light System Focusing on Autonomic Nervous System Activity for Overcoming Yellow Signal Dilemma (황색신호 딜레마 극복을 위한 자율신경계 활성도 중심의 신호체계 평가)

  • This study is aimed at investigating drivers' reactions to yellow signal dilemma situations as a result of the existing signal system, and developing a new signal system. A driver-centered coping model was developed through bio-signal analysis. The driver's physiological response in the existing signal system was observed, and the signal system was developed by applying intersection road driving conditions using a car graphic simulator. Participants were classified into a control group (existing signal system) and an experimental group for a new yellow signal system (new signal system). Based on the results, the emergence of parasympathetic nerves was higher in the experimental group than in the control group, where a statistically significant difference was observed (p < 0.05). The newly developed signal system appeared to cause tension among drivers; however, the sympathetic to parasympathetic nerve ratio was 6: 4, which could be interpreted as an ideal balance. We conclude that drivers can drive more stably if the coping signal system developed in this study is applied to the traffic system.

Development of Work Zone Traffic Control Algorithm for Two Lane Road (공사구간 교대통행 동적제어 알고리즘 개발)

  • Work zone traffic control is of keen interest because both traffic operations and safety performances are directly affected by traffic management methods. In particular, work zone traffic on two-lane roads needs to be managed in more efficient and safer manners due to its unique characteristics of alternative right-of-way assignment. This study developed a dynamic control algorithm that can be used for real-time operations of two-lane work zone traffic. The performance of the developed algorithm was evaluated by VISSIM microscopic traffic simulator. An applied programming interface (API) based program was developed to plug-in the control algorithm onto the simulator. The results demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed control algorithm for two-lane work zone.
