A sensor system has been developed that uses an ultrasonic sensor to detect the downhill slope on the side of a forest road and prevents a vehicle-type forest machine from rolling down a mountainside. A specular reflection of ultrasonic wave might cause severe issues in measuring distances to targets. By investigating the installation angle of the sensor to minimize the negative effects of specular reflection, the installation angle of lateral monitoring ultrasonic sensor could be determined based on the width of road shoulder. Obstacles such as small rocks or piece of log in a forest road may cause the forest machine to be overturned while the machine riding over due to excessive its posture change. It was determined that the laser sensor could be a part of a sensor system capable of specifying the location and size of small obstacles. Not only this sensor system including ultrasonic and laser sensors can issue a warning of dangerous sections to drivers in forest forwarders currently in use, but also it can be used as a driving safety sensor in autonomous forest machine or remote-control forest machine in the future.
The movement of rock cut slopes may result in upheaval of an adjacent road. Because most cut slopes consist of rock, road upheaval due to the movement of a cut slope is a rare phenomenon in Korea. We found that the movement of rock slopes which are heavily weathered and with strongly developed weak zones is governed by circular failure of the overall rock formation rather than by failure along discontinuities. The results of a numerical analysis revealed that the application of a ubiquitous joint model in a continuum analysis is appropriate for anisotropic rocks (e.g., schist) and for slopes for which the stability is influenced by a particular discontinuity. The results of a field investigation and numerical analyses suggest that retaining walls and anchors should be used to stabilize rock slopes and that real-time monitoring equipment should be installed to assess the reinforcing effect of the remedial measures.

The slope of an open cut tunnel is located above the exit of the Leijia tunnel on the Changgan high-speed railway. During the excavation of the open cut tunnel foundation pit, the slope slipped twice, a large landslide of 92500 m3 formed. The landslide body and unstable slope body not only caused the foundation pit of the open cut tunnel to be buried and the anchor piles to be damaged but also directly threatened the operational safety of the later high-speed railway. Therefore, to study the stability change in the slope of the open cut tunnel under heavy rain and excavation conditions, a 3D numerical calculation model of the slope is carried out by Midas GTS software, the deformation mechanism is analyzed, anti-sliding measures are proposed, and the effectiveness of the anti-sliding measures is analyzed according to the field monitoring results. The results show that when rainfall occurs, rainwater collects in the open cut tunnel area, resulting in a transient saturation zone on the slope on the right side of the open cut tunnel, which reduces the shear strength of the slope soil; the excavation at the slope toe reduces the anti-sliding capacity of the slope toe. Under the combined action of excavation and rainfall, when the soil above the top of the anchor pile is excavated, two potential sliding surfaces are bounded by the top of the excavation area, and the shear outlet is located at the top of the anchor pile. After the excavation of the open cut tunnel, the potential sliding surface is mainly concentrated at the lower part of the downhill area, and the shear outlet moves down to the bottom of the open cut tunnel. Based on the deformation characteristics and the failure mechanism of the landslides, comprehensive control measures, including interim emergency mitigation measures and long-term mitigation measures, are proposed. The field monitoring results further verify the accuracy of the anti-sliding mechanism analysis and the effectiveness of anti-sliding measures.

Better understanding of in-situ mechanical behavior of pavement foundations is very important to predict long-term effects on the system performance of transport infrastructure. For this purpose resilient stiffness characterization of geomaterials is needed to properly adopt such mechanistic analysis under both traffic and environmental loadings. In this paper in-situ monitoring data from KHC test road were used to analyze the non-linear response using finite element method for a selected constitutive model of foundation geomaterials, and the results were compared with the field data.

Some arguments have been about over the representativeness of government-run air quality monitoring stations among scholars and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). However, it is not a simple problem to move monitoring stations because of continuity of data and high cost. So it is necessary to complement the monitoring data if it do not represent the ambient air quality properly. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the representativeness of some monitoring stations using passive $NO_2$ samplers and to find a complementary method from linear regression. Two stations were chosen for the evaluation: Shinlim Station was one of the most controversial stations in Seoul and Banpo Station had the best reputation. Air qualities were surveyed at seven points around each monitoring station with consideration of land use and distance. The ratios of the average $NO_2$ levels of the areas to these at the monitoring stations were 1.59 for Shinlim Station and 1.03 for Banpo Station. The differences between the average $NO_2$ levels and those at the monitoring stations were 10.75 ppb for Shilim Station and 0.34 ppb for Banpo Station. The correlation coefficients between the two levels were 0.7668 for Shinlim and 0.7662 for Banpo. The average coefficients of determination $(R^2)$ were 0.61 for Shinlim and 0.61 for Banpo. The Shinlim Station could not represent the air quality of Shinlim-Dong good because it is located in a green area at an outskirt of Shinlim-Dong. But the Banpo Station located in a central residential area of Banpo-Dong showed a fair representativeness. However, air quality turned out to be different with land use such as residential area, green area or road: the air quality data from a monitoring station located at a certain land use should not be interpreted as representing the air quality at any sites around the station. Equations to predict the average $NO_2$ levels of each area from the data from the monitoring stations were presented based on linear regression.

Developments and applications of the structural health monitoring (SHM) systems have become active particularity for long-span bridges in Korea. They are composed of sensors, data acquisition system, data transmission system, information processing, damage assessment, and information management. In this paper, current status of research and application activities on SHM systems for civil infra-structures in Korea are briefly introduced by 4 parts: (1) current status of bridge monitoring systems on existing and newly constructed bridges, (2) research and development activities on smart sensors such as optical fiber sensors and piezo-electric sensors, (3) structural damage detection methods using measured data, and (4) a test road project for pavement design verification and enhancement by the Korea Highway Corporation. Finally the R&D activities of a new engineering research center entitled Smart Infra-Structure Technology Center at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology are also briefly described.
Object tracking is a common vision task to detect and trace objects between consecutive frames. It is also important for a variety of applications such as surveillance, video based traffic monitoring system, and so on. An efficient moving vehicle clustering and tracking algorithm suitable for traffic monitoring system is proposed in this paper. First, automatic background extraction method is used to get a reliable background as a reference. The moving blob(object) is then separated from the background by mean shift method. Second, the scale invariant feature based method extracts the salient features from the clustered foreground blob. It is robust to change the illumination, scale, and affine shape. The simulation results on various road situations demonstrate good performance achieved by proposed method.
Road surface monitoring is essential for maintaining road environment safety through managing risk factors like rutting and crack detection. Using autonomous driving-based UGVs with high-performance 2D laser sensors enables more precise measurements. However, the increased energy consumption of these sensors is limited by constrained battery capacity. In this paper, we propose a fusion sensor system for efficient surface monitoring with UGVs. The proposed system combines color information from cameras and depth information from line laser sensors to accurately detect surface displacement. Furthermore, a dynamic sampling algorithm is applied to control the scanning frequency of line laser sensors based on the detection status of monitoring targets using camera sensors, reducing unnecessary energy consumption. A power consumption model of the fusion sensor system analyzes its energy efficiency considering various crack distributions and sensor characteristics in different mission environments. Performance analysis demonstrates that setting the power consumption of the line laser sensor to twice that of the saving state when in the active state increases power consumption efficiency by 13.3% compared to fixed sampling under the condition of λ=10, µ=10.

Advances in sensor technologies have led to the instrumentation of sensor networks for bridge monitoring and management. For a dense sensor network, enormous amount of sensor data are collected. The data need to be managed, processed, and interpreted. Data management issues are of prime importance for a bridge management system. This paper describes a data management infrastructure for bridge monitoring applications. Specifically, NoSQL database systems such as MongoDB and Apache Cassandra are employed to handle time-series data as well the unstructured bridge information model data. Standard XML-based modeling languages such as OpenBrIM and SensorML are adopted to manage semantically meaningful data and to support interoperability. Data interoperability and integration among different components of a bridge monitoring system that includes on-site computers, a central server, local computing platforms, and mobile devices are illustrated. The data management framework is demonstrated using the data collected from the wireless sensor network installed on the Telegraph Road Bridge, Monroe, MI.

While the budget has been allocated more for repairs and reinforcements, casualties are gradually increased due to slope disaster. Slope disaster causes road damaged as well as casualties. It also causes significant social and economic loss. The measurement device, which is installed inside ground of slope like inclinometer, has the high loss rate when slope is being slided. The electric type and the vibrating wire type have low durability because of corrosion. To cover the demerit of the present slope monitoring, the measurement method using the Multi-Antenna GPS has been developed. The Multi-Antenna GPS has been installed in the local slope as the regular monitoring system for slope. Although the initial cost of the Multi-Antenna GPS for installation is high, the additional cost is low. So it is the suitable method for large slope. The regular monitoring system using the Multi-Antenna GPS is the suitable measurement method for watching slope collapse, which is occurred widely, because it is economical, has high durability, and collects data with high resolution.
