This study has an objective to estimate effect on water-quality enhancement by removal of contaminated river-bed material using a two-dimensional numerical modeling in the Seonakdong River, the Pyunggang River and the Maekdo River. RMA2 and RMA4 models were used for flow and contaminant transport simulation, respectively. After the analysis of the effects of flow restoration plan for the Seonakdong River system made by Lee et al (2008), simulation have been performed about scenarios which contains operations of the Daejeo Gate, the Noksan Gate, the Makdo Gate (on planning), and the Noksan Pumping Station. Because there is no option for elution from bed sediment in the RMA4 model, a simple technique has been used for initial condition modification for elution. The analyses revealed that the effect on water quality improvement due to dredging of bed sediment seemed to be less than 10 % of the total effect. The most efficient measure for the water quality improvement of the river system was the linked operation of water-gates and pumping station.
Karyotype of the ricessh Orygias latipes (Temminck et Schlegel) was investigated using 151 specimens of eleven populations in the southern Korea. Based on the karyotype analysis, two distinct chromosomal groups were found. One group, occurring in the Kum River, the Mankyong River, the Dongjin River, the Ysngsan River and the SEmjin River had a diploid chromosome number of 46 and arm number of 70, which contained one pair of "large" metacentric chromosomes. The other group, occurring in the Tamjin River, the Hyongsan River andthe all four island populations observed had a diploid chromosome number of 48 and arm number of 68. These results showed that 0. latipes of 6 inland populations was identical with the Chinese population in diploid number, arm number and presence of "large" metacentric chromosome, while the present species of island populations ana populations of the Tamjn R. and Hyongsan R. was similar to the Japanese population in chromosome number and arm number. The karyotype variation in populations indicated that karyotypes will probably provide useful information in studying zoogeography of this species.phy of this species.
The efficiency of fishway installed in rivers can be directly evaluated by means of fish monitoring. On the other hand, when it is difficult to monitor the fish in certain conditions, or when planning a fishway, the efficiency can be evaluated indirectly through the hydraulic analysis. In this study, the hydraulic analysis technique for evaluating the efficiency of a fishway was presented. The River-2D model with the fish physical habitat module was used for the analysis of the attraction efficiency, and the weighted usable area was proposed as an index of the efficiency. In the analysis of passage efficiency, the three-dimensional model, Flow-3D, was used as an evaluation tool to describe the fluid behavior on a hydraulic structure with free surface. The ice-harbor type fishway at Baekgok weir in the Deokcheon River was selected as a test-site, and the efficiency was estimated using the hydraulic analysis. And then it was compared with fish monitoring data acquired from the river. As a result, it is difficult to replace the hydraulic analysis results with the efficiency quantitatively, but it can help to grasp the general tendency.
Using the data from the national survey of fish, we determined the population size and the distribution of Micropterus salmoides, which is a translocated species into the aquatic ecosystem of Korea. . The spatial concentration of this species was determined by performing an optimized hot spot analysis. After determining potential invasiveness and risk assessment, we measured the disturbance of biodiversity in the aquatic ecosystem. The result of distribution analysis indicates that the population of M. salmoides was concentrated in the major basins of Han river, Geum river, Nakdong river, and Yeongsan-Seomjin river, including the Jeju island. In particular, Nakdong river basin showed the highest appearance rate. On the contrary, Yeongsan-Seomjin river basin showed the lowest appearance rate. The Nakdong river and the Nakdong river basin were the areas with the high spatial concentration of M. salmoides. On the other hand, only Han river basin and Geum river basin had the lowest spatial concentration. The fish invasiveness screening kit(FISK) was used to assess M. salmoides, which inhabited a broad region of aquatic ecosystem: the assessment score was 31.0, indicating its 'highly invasive' nature. Our study aims to encourage research that improves the biodiversity and the conservation of M. salmoides in a priority area.
This study aims to identify the limiting nutrient for algal growth in the Geum River and the significant pollutant sources from the tributaries affecting the water quality and to provide a management alternative for an improvement of water quality. An eight-year of daily data (2013~2020) were collected from the Water Environment Information System (water.nier.go.kr) and Water Resources Management Information System (wamis.go.kr). 14 water quality variables were analyzed at five water quality monitoring stations in the Geum River (WQ1-WQ5). In the Geum River, the water quality variables, especially Chl-a vary greatly in downstream of the river. In the open weir gate operation, TP (total phosphorus) and water temperature greatly influence the growth of algae in downstream of the river. A correlation analysis was used to identify the relationship between variables and investigate the factor affecting algal growth in the Geum River. At the downstream station (WQ5), TP and Temp have shown a strong correlation with Chl-a, indicating they significantly influence the algal bloom. The principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to identify and prioritize the major pollutant sources of the two major tributaries of the river, Gab-cheon and Miho-cheon. PCA identifies three major pollutant sources for Gab-cheon and Miho-cheon, respectively. For Gab-cheon, wastewater treatment plant, urban, and agricultural pollutions pollution are identified as significant pollutant sources. For Miho-cheon, agricultural, urban, and forest land are identified as major pollutant sources. PCA seems to be effective in identifying water pollutant sources for the Geum River and its tributaries in detail and thus can be used to develop water quality management strategies.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the change of phytoplankton fluctuation and long term of water quality of Lake Juam and to evaluate the relationship between phytoplankton pattern and environmental factors data. Correlation and factor analyses were employed to identify key environmental factors affecting phytoplankton dynamics. Of 18 parameters, pH, temperature, COD, BOD and T-P were highly correlated with Chl-a. Phytoplankton data showed that cyanobacteria were dominant, and more than 60% of total algae density. Also Lake Juam received a lot of influence of the Asian monsoon climate. This study presents necessity of multivariate statistic techniques for evaluation of Lake Juam complex data set with a view to get better information data and effective management of water source.
The purpose of the present study is to analyze pollutant runoff characteristics from non-point sources in Joman River basin. The present study contains analyzed results of rainfall and SS, BOD, COD, TN, TP runoff from Joman River basin. This study contains a sensitivity analysis of parameters that affect the simulation results of rainfall and pollutants runoff. Result of the sensitivity analysis shows that proportion of watershed and impervious areas is the most sensitive to peak discharge and total flowrate for rainfall runoff and that WASHPO is the most sensitive parameter for pollutants runoff. For parameter estimation and verification, flowrate and water quality is measured at the Kangdong Bridge in Haeban stream. A single rainfall event is use to perform parameter estimation and verification. Results of the present study show that total pollutant loads of Joman River basin is 11,600 ton of SS, 452 ton of BOD, 1,084 ton of COD, 515 ton of TN, and 49 ton of TP, respectively. In addition, it is found that contribution ratio of non point source and total source is 89% of SS, 63% of BOD, 61% of COD, 21% of TN, and 32% of TP, respectively.
An EMERGY analysis of the main energy flows driving the economy of humans and life support systems consists of environmental energies, fuels, and imports, all expresses as solar emjoules. Total EMERGY use(720.0 E20 sej/yr) of the Nakdong River Basin is 96 per cent from imported sources, fuels and goods and services. EMERGY flows from the environment such as rain and geological uplift flux accounted for only 4 percent of total EMERGY use. Consequently, the ratio of outside investment to attracting natural resources was large, like other industrialized areas. EMERGY use per person in the Nakdong River Basin indicates a moderate EMERGY standard of living, even though the indigenous resources are very poor. Population of 6.66 million people in 1996 is already in excess of carrying capacity of the basin. Carrying capacity for steady state based on its renewable sources in only 0.226 million people. EMERGY yield ratio and environment loading ratio were 1.07 and 28.52, respectively. EMERGY sustainability index, a ratio of EMERGY yield ratio to environment loading ratio, is therefore less than one, which is indicative of highly developed consumer oriented economies. This study suggests that the economic structure of the Nakdong River Basin should be transformed from the present industrial structure to the social-economic structure based on an ecological-recycling concept for the sustainable use of the Nakdong River.
Many of today's environmental problems are regional in scope and their effects overlap and interact. The purpose of this paper is to developed a simple method for an integrated assessment of environmental conditions across the Mid-Nakdong River Region, by combining data on land use, impervious cover, roads, streams, riparian areas, forest patches, population, pollutant loadings, soil erosion and topography. A cluster analysis was used to identify groups of sub-watersheds with similar environmental characteristics. The mean value for each group was used to find watershed that may be more vulnerable to future environmental degradation. Watersheds in cluster I and II had high amount of forest, but the amount of riparian vegetation was low. Watersheds in cluster III, which located in the middle Geumho River and the main course of Nakdong River, had a greater proportion of their agriculture, a greater proportion of agriculture on steep slopes, and less forest adjacent to streams. Watersheds in cluster IV and V were in the most urbanized areas of the region. The principal adverse impacts for watersheds in this group were high scores for urban area, impervious cover, pollutant loadings, population density, forest fragmentation, and low amounts of forest and riparian forest cover. Notwithstanding the exploratory nature of cluster analysis, it appears to be a useful tool for grouping watersheds with similar environmental characteristics.

Flow input from the basin will not remain the same as before due to climate changes. Since the predictions on river discharge due to climate change is given by scenarios, various discharge scenarios were prepared in this study. For a long term and reach prediction, semi-two dimensional sediment transport model, GSTARS, was used. The flood water surface elevations predicted by GSTARS model were analysed statistically and it was concluded that the model is applicable for the South Han River. Three stream tubes is the most suitable to simulate two dimensional river geometric change River geometric changes. For sediment load computation, Ackers and White equation and Yang equation were resonable. River will become narrower regardless of discharge variation, more discharge results in deeper channel.
