  • As an application of ring filters, a new and simple method to determine an inherent-ring-resonance frequency is introduced. The ring filter consists of a ring and two short stubs. They are connected at 90$^{\circ}$ and 270$^{\circ}$ points of the ring and the ring filter may be seen in such way that two filters are connected in parallel. Therefore, if the two powers of the two filters are out-of-phase at the output, the power excited at the input can not be delivered. That can be done by making difference in length of the two short stubs, and when a certain condition is satisfied, a frequency exists where all the excited power is reflected. That is the very inherent-ring-resonance frequency. In the lossless case, the return loss with the condition reaches 0 dB at the inherent-ring-resonance frequency but does not with conductor, dielectric losses and so on. Therefore, the effective loss tangent at a frequency of interest may be obtained correctly. To verify the method, two ring filters have been fabricated in microstrip lines and the measured results show good agreement with the predicted ones.

  • A ring filter is proposed as a wide-banded filter. It consists of a ring and two short stubs, which are connected at 90$^{\circ}$ and 270$^{\circ}$ points of the ring. Since the termination impedance at 90$^{\circ}$ and 270$^{\circ}$ points of the ring and the characteristic impedance of the short stub have an effect on designing of it, the relation between them and bandwidths has been studied. Based on the study, two types of small-sized wideband CVT(constant VSWR-type impedance transformer)- and CCT(constant conductance-type impedance transformer)-ring filters are introduced, designed, simulated and one of two, a CCT -ring filter, is tested. The circumference of the ring can be reduced theoretically up to 60$^{\circ}$ and two of many cases having about 300$^{\circ}$ circumferences are simulated. The simulated results show more than 100 % fractional bandwidth, which can be obtained with more than 5 stages in conventional filter-design techniques. To test the designed CCT-ring filter, it has been fabricated in microstrip technology and the measured results show good agreement with the simulated ones, having more than 100 % fractional bandwidth.

  • In this paper, we numerically study both band-pass and band-stop plasmonic filters based on Metal-Insulator-Metal (MIM) waveguides and circular ring resonators. The band-pass filter consists of two MIM waveguides coupled to each other by a circular ring resonator. The band-stop filter is made up of an MIM waveguide coupled laterally to a circular ring resonator. The propagating modes of Surface Plasmon Polaritons (SPPs) are studied in these structures. By substituting a portion of the ring core with air, while the outer dimensions of the ring resonator are kept constant, we illustrate the possibility of red-shift in resonant wavelengths in order to tune the resonance modes of the proposed filters. This feature is useful for integrated circuits in which we have limitations on the outer dimensions of the filter structure and it is not possible to enlarge the dimension of the ring resonator to reach to longer resonant wavelengths. The results are obtained by a 2D finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The introduced structures have potential applications in plasmonic integrated circuits and can be simply fabricated.

  • Single-ring all-pass filters with various coupling ratios are designed, fabricated, and characterized to assess the validity of the split-step time-domain modeling approach, which is considered for direct simulation of time-domain characteristics, such as optical delay, of various ring resonator devices. When the coupling ratio of the single-ring all-pass filter is 0.4 and 0.8, the delay time is measured to be about 145 and 42 ps respectively, which is comparable to the time-domain modeling results of 151 and 47 ps respectively. The measurements for two- and three-ring all-pass filters are also found to agree quite well with the simulation results. With these results it is confirmed that the split-step time-domain model could be efficiently incorporated into an optical-communication simulation module for ring resonator delay components in an all-optical packet switching system.

  • Broadband metal-dielectric-metal terahertz filters composed of complementary rings are designed and demonstrated. Four samples with different parameters were fabricated. Results measured using THz time-domain spectroscopy system show excellent agreement with simulations. Compared with the broadband filters reported before, the complementary ring structure in our design is insensitive to any polarization at normal incidence due to symmetry of the ring. Furthermore, the influence of structure parameters (such as period, radius, slot width, thickness and incidence angles) on the transmission characteristics has been investigated theoretically. The encouraging results afforded by designing of the filters could find applications in broadband sensors, terahertz communication systems, and other emerging terahertz technologies.

  • In this paper, new bandpass filters that are composed of microstrip ring resonators with the center frequency of 5.775 GHz and the bandwidth of 100 MHz are presented. For the suppression of the unnecessary harmonics, lowpass filters are inserted into the feedlines and ring resonator itself, respectively These bandpass filters show good microwave characteristics with the harmonic suppression ratio of about 39 dB and 35 dB, respectively. Also, the varactor-tuned microstip ring bandpass filter with harmonic suppression is suggested and the tuning bandwidth of more than 450 MHz is obtained.

  • Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the performances of anaerobic filters packed with ceramic tube and pall-ring media treating a dairy waste. The media packing volume was 65% of effective volume of anaerobic filter. Organics removals of anaerobic filters were maintained above 80% even at an organics loading rate of $10kgCOD/m^3/d$, and this was comparable to aerobic treatment of organic wastes. Organics removals of the ceramic tube anaerobic filters were always lower than those of the pall-ring anaerobic filters due to intrinsic physical property of ceramic tube, especially lower void space which caused to clogging and entrapment of biogas, substrate transfer limitation, and irregular evolution of biogas leading to loss of solids and biomass. This was clearly observed in higher concentration of TSS in the effluent from the ceramic tube anaerobic filter despite of higher retention capacity of TSS compared with pall-ring media. Vertical distribution of organics and solids in the filters showed above 90% of organics and solids in influent were removed below 20% of reactor height, and 50% of remaining organics and solids were removed though media packing zone. Effluent quality from the anaerobic filter was heavily depended on media itself as well as suspended biomass formed below media. It is therefore concluded that the type of media played an important role in biomass accumulation arid gas-liquid-solid separation efficiency. Type of media did not affect the start-up behaviors of the anaerobic filter, and supernatant from anaerobic digested sludge showed a good performance as a seeding materials.

  • In this paper, we design a slow-wave bandpass filter that uses a microstrip line periodically loaded with microstrip ing resonators for WLAN(5 GHz). Unlike conventional slow-wave filters, this filter is designed to produce a narrow passband at the fundamental mode of the resonators and provide lower insertion loss than that of parallel- or cross-coupled ring bandpass filters. A PBG(Photonic Band Gap) structure patterned in the ground plane is used to suppress the spurious transmission and extend out-of-band rejections Experimental result shows that the first spurious response in the stopband of the slow-wave bandpass filter can be rejected using a PBG structure.

  • A two-dimensional optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) en/decoder composed of four double-ring resonator add/drop filters and three delay waveguides is designed, and a transfer matrix method combined with fast Fourier transform is implemented to provide numerical simulations for the en/decoder. The auto-correlation peak level over the maximum cross-correlation level is larger than 3 at the center of the correctly decoded pulse for most of wavelength hopping and spectral phase code combinations, which assures the BER lower than 10-3 which corresponds to the forward error correction limit.
