게리트 리트벨트 디자인 개념 재평가에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Reappraisal of Gerrit Thomas Rietveld's Design Concept)

  • This study aims to evaluate Rietveld's creative design style and concepts. To this end, I looked into the evaluation of major researchers on Rietveld, classified all his works into four groups according to the design types and analyzed them. As follows: based on the results of the analysis of works I concluded. First, Rietveld created the concept of the spatial extension to the ingenious joint which had the structural node formed of three listels with quadrangular section. It is the design innovation that led to liberate the closed construction. Second, Rietveld had opened up the possibility to neutralize the gravitational three-dimensional works. He subtracted the weight in the direction of gravity from the three-dimensional structure of the works and painted the three primary colors on them partially to get rid of the original material color. Therefore they looked like the forms liberated from gravity. Third, Rietveld ripped off the surfaces of cube through several formative experiments and decomposed the volume into the tesseract. Through this method of realizing the new plastic concepts, he completed the architectural models of weightlessness. Fourth, Rietveld opened the possibility of the realization of the three-dimensional works integrated all space and time in the one-pieced works and the folded works. Fifth, Rietveld steadily experimented and realized the internal and external integration of time and space in his later works.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out organizing strategy of de-composition works in modern plastic arts. Through investigating the development process of De Stijl painters and Rietveld's early works and analyzing the composition and disposition type of elements such as point, line, plane, color in the selected works, we can draw some conclusions. First, Rietveld pursues the dissolution of traditional volume and the de-composition of elements as Mondrian does through crossing-connection of three listels with quadrangular section. Second, Rietveld reorganized de-composition elements with detached lines and color planes. Third, Rietveld experimented possibility of new plastic space through displacing elements, opening space, making anti-gravity space.

Application of Inverse Pole Figure to Rietveld Refinement: I. Rietveld Refinement of Copper Sheet using X-ray Diffraction Data

  • Both the X-ray diffraction data of the normal direction in the sample orientation and the pole figure data of three reflections, (111), (200) and (220), were used to do the Rietveld refinement for the copper sheet prepared by a cold rolling process. The agreement between calculated and observed patterns was not satisfactory, which was attributed to the preferred orientation effect of the copper sheet. The Rietveld refinement for the copper sheet could be done successfully by applying the pole density of each reflection obtained from the corresponding inverse pole figure to the X-ray diffraction data of the normal direction. The R-weighted pattern, $R_{wp}$ was 12.99% and the goodness-of-fit indicator, S, was 3.68.

  • Gerrit Rietveld who is Dutch architect and furniture designer had explored the plastic abstractness based on the universality of De Stijl principle. He had tried to expand the boundary of furniture design bound to traditional form and decorative aesthetics. Beginning of 20th century, he opened the new aesthetic realm of pure and abstract value for furniture design for the first time. Through this research, the results can be summarized as follows. The characteristics of his deign are abstractness, spatial consideration and tectonic construction. The abstractness is attained by simplifying constructional material into geometrical forms such as straight line, rectangle and square. And he adopted unconventional way of construction in order to increase this abstractness. The space included in his furniture can be expressed in the new technology of joint, the visual transparency using linear material, and the destruction of corners. All these aspects harmoniously helped the feeling of architectural space of flow. Through the exposed frame of furniture, Rietveld emphasized on the tectonic construction by methodological treatment such as piling-up or overlapping material. The characteristics of Gerrit Rietveld's design are abstract, spatial and tectonic. These aesthetical tendencies could be understood as a junction between De Stijl's principles and modern architecture's spatial preferences-flow and extension of space-.

Application of Inverse Pole Figure to Rietveld Refinement: II. Rietveld Refinement of Tungsten Liner using Neutron Diffraction Data

  • The three-dimensional orientation distribution function of a conical shaped tungsten liner prepared by the thermo-mechanical forming process was analyzed by 1.525$\AA$ neutrons to carry out the Rietveld refinement. The pole figure data of three reflections, (110)(220) and (211) were measured. The orientation distribution functions for the normal and radial directions were calculated by the WIMV method. The inverse pole figures of the normal and radial directions were obtained from their orientation distribution functions. The Rietveld refinement was performed with the RIETAN program that was slightly modified for the description of preferred orientation effect. We could successfully do the Rietveld refinement of the strongly textured tungsten liner by applying the pole density of each reflection obtained from the inverse pole figure to the calculated diffraction pattern. The correction method of preferred orientation effect based on the inverse pole figures showed a good improvement over the semi-empirical texture correction based on the direct usage of simple empirical functions.

Rietveld Refinement 방법을 응용한 장석 혼합시료의 정량분석 연구 (Quantitative Analysis of Feldspar Mixture Samples Using the Rietveld Refinement Method)

  • 앨바이트 (albite) 와 석영, 그리고 미사장석 (microcline)과 앨바이트의 표준 혼합물 시료를 마련하여 이들에 대해 Rietveld refinement 방법을 사용하여 정량분석 및 결정구조분석을 실시하였다. Rietveld refinement 방법을 이용한 정량분석 결과의 표준편차는 앨바이트와 석영의 표준 혼합물 시료의 분석시에는 4 wt %, 미사장석과 앨바이트의 표준 혼합물 시료의 분석시에는 1 wt %인데 이것은 분리된 피크를 이용하는 기존의 XRD 정량분석법의 결과에 비해 훨씬 향상된 것이다. 또한, 정량분석과 동시에 얻어지는 각 구성광물의 단위포상수값도 정확하게 측정되는 것으로 검증되었다. 앨바이트와 석영의 표준 혼합물처럼 서로 다른 결정입자의 배열 특징을 가진 광물로 구성된 시료의 정량분석 결과에는 실제 무게비와 비교할 때 규칙적인 편이현상이 나타난다. 관찰된 결정입자의 배열현상지수(preferred orientation parameter)와 R-값은 결정입자의 특정방향으로의 배열효과가 미치는 영향이 Rietveld refinement 분석시에 완벽하게 계산될 수 없기 때문에 규칙적인 편이가 발생하는 것임을 지시해 준다. Dollase-March 및 Rietveld-Toraya 함수와 같은 결정입자의 배열현상 보정방법은 정확한 단위포상수 (unit-cell parameter)의 측정에는 도움을 주지만 정량분석결과를 향상시키는 데는 한계가 있는 것으로 보인다. 시료중에서 결정입자의 배열현상을 뚜렷히 보이는 광물의 무게비는 실제값보다 약간 크게 측정되는데, 이러한 현상은 결정입자의 외형 때문에 마운트된 시료표면에서 일어나는 효과에 의한 것으로 판단된다. Rietveld refinement 방법은 분말 X-선 회절도형의 피크들을 분리할 필요없이 회절도형전체를 한꺼번에 분석함으로써 피크의 중첩현상을 극복할 수 있고, 기존의 XRD 정량분석법에 비하여 입자의 배열현상의 문제점을 최소화시킬 수 있다. 또한 refinement된 정확한 단위포상수값이 회절도형의 비례상수와 함께 정량화하는 식에 사용되므로, Rietveld refinement를 이용한 정량분석법은 매우 정확한 광물학적 분석결과를 얻을 수 있는 방법으로 판단된다.

  • the crystal structure of pale green gem-quality olivine from Bisbee mine,Arizona, (Mg1.83Fe0.18)Si0.99O4, a=4.7608(4)$\AA$, c=5.9903(6)$\AA$, c=5.9903(4)$\AA$, V=291.49(1)$\AA$, Pbnm, Z=4 has been refined by both single-crystal and Rietveld methods to R(%) indices of 2.20 and 9.07, respectively. Comparison of site occupancies, cell dimensions, atomic coordinations, and interatomic distances/angles obtained from both methods shows that the Rietveld method produces more accurate site scattering values, cell dimension, and atomic positions than the single-crystal method. This indicates that the Rietveld method is a useful technique for the structural characterization and crystal-chemical study of powdered samples of natural minerals and synthetic materials.

Rietveld 정밀화법과 SEM-EDS 분석에 의한 DPF용 코디어라이트 하니컴 세라믹스의 결정성장 과정 분석 (Characterization of crystal phase evolution in cordierite honeycomb for diesel particulate filter by using rietveld refinement and SEM-EDS methods)

  • 코디어라이트(Mg2Al4Si5O18) 하니컴 세라믹스의 대표적 응용분야는 자동차 배기가스 정화용 필터(diesel particulate filter(DPF))이다. 천연광물, 조공제, 유기바인더를 혼합한 슬러리를 압출하여 DPF용 하니컴 코디어라이트를 성형한 후 980~1450℃ 범위에서 소결하였다. 소결온도에 따른 결정상(indialite, cordierite, cristobalite, alumina, spinel, mullite, pro-enstatite)의 형성과정을 XRD Rietveld 정밀화법을 이용하여 정량분석 하였다. 동시에, 세라믹 에칭(etching) 방법으로 소결 시료 표면의 비정질상을 제거한 후 SEM/EDS법을 사용하여 결정상들의 형상과 조성을 확인하였다. 이들 결과로부터 DPF 하니컴에서 결정상 형성 과정을 명확히 밝힐 수 있었다. 또한, DPF 하니컴의 소결온도에 따른 열팽창계수(linear coefficient of thermal expansion, CTE) 변화를 분석하였고, 결정상의 정량분석결과를 바탕으로 계산된 CTE와 비교하였다. 소결된 DPF 하니컴 내의 결정상들이 CTE 특성에 미치는 영향을 고찰하였다.
