  • In order to evade the patent of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (RABiTS process) and search for more economical process, a new process for producing the biaxially textured Ni tape by electrodeposition has been investigated. Electrodeposition was performed in the modified Watts bath. The crystal orientations of electrodeposited Ni were analysed by X-ray pole figure, ${\phi}$-scan and ${\omega}$-scan. The electrodeposited Ni tape showed cube texture with good out-of plane(< 8${\circ}$) and in-plane alignment(< 20${\circ}$).

  • Self-assembled InAs quantum dots (QDs) embedded in an InAlGaAs matrix were grown on an InP (001) using a solid-source molecular beam epitaxy and investigated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. TEM images indicated that the QD formation was strongly dependent on the growth behaviors of group III elements during the deposition of InAlGaAs barriers. We achieved a lasing operation of around 1.5 ${\mu}m$ at room temperature from uncoated QD lasers based on the InAlGaAs-InAlAs material system on the InP (001). The lasing wavelengths of the ridge-waveguide QD lasers were also dependent upon the cavity lengths due mainly to the gain required for the lasing operation.

  • The motion of passively floating body, whose keel can have a contact with seabed soil, is under the consideration. The body simulates ice ridge floating in shallow water. The force of seabed soil reaction applied to the grounded keel is estimated taking into account soil embankment near the grounded keel. Two-dimensional trajectories of body motion, the shape of the grooves in seabed and the height of soil embankment are calculated when the motion of the body is caused by semidiurnal $M_2$ tide. The influence of wave amplitude and bottom slope on the shapes of body trajectory and the grooves are analyzed.

  • The complex phenomenon of the bond formation in geopolymer is not well understood and therefore, difficult to model. This paper present applied statistical models for evaluating the compressive strength of geopolymer. The applied statistical models studied are divided into three different categories - linear regression [least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and elastic net], tree regression [decision and bagging tree] and kernel methods (support vector regression (SVR), kernel ridge regression (KRR), Gaussian process regression (GPR), relevance vector machine (RVM)]. The performance of the methods is compared in terms of error indices, computational effort, convergence and residuals. Based on the present study, kernel based methods (GPR and KRR) are recommended for evaluating compressive strength of Geopolymer concrete.

  • The primordial germ cell of the sweet fish was recognized from the 2-day old fry (tl : 0.66 cm), when it began to protrude into peritoneal cavity between meaonephric duct and gut. The primordial gonad, with the formation of genital ridge, developed on the 30-day old fry. Ovarian differentiation was identified by the presence of ovarian cavity and meiotic oocytes from the 90-day old fry (tl : 3.42 cm). Testicular differentiation was identified by the presence of spermatogonial cells with efferent duct from the 100-day old fry (11 : 4.50 cm). Hence the sweet fish belongs to the differentiated type of gonochoristic teleost.

  • The treatment objective of mandibular fracture is a return to normal function. According to Champy, a rigid fixation of mandibular angle fracture is performed by using 4 or 6 holes titanium miniplates on the external oblique ridge of mandible. However, the limitations of metal plate such as hypersensitivity, interference with the cranio-facial growth of growing child, secondary bone resorption around the plate, foreign body reaction, declination of primary callus formation, and bone atrophy due to the lack of normal stress reaction of the bone have been reported. Recently, biodegradable miniplate has been introduced and used as an alternative to the metal plate despite its lower strength than that of the titanium plate and the side effect caused by the resorption in the body. In this study, 61 patients diagnosed as mandibular angle fracture and treated from Jan. 1998 to Dec. 2004 in our department have been reviewed. Metal plate fixation was used in 50 patients and biodegradable plate fixation in 11 patients on the external oblique ridge around the fractured mandibular angle according to the principle of monocortical osteosynthesis by Champy. We compared the incidence of side effects and the degree of bony union at the mandibular inferior border in two different fixation methods. In conclusion, we have found that one miniplate regardless of matter could provide enough strength to grasp bony fragments of the tension site and compress the inferior border of mandible without any complications.

  • The K Ar ages, whole rock geochemistry and Sr Nd Pb isotopes have been determined for the submarine basalts dredged from the P2 and P3 segments of the Antarctic-Phoenix Ridge (APR), Drake Passage, Antarctica, for better understanding on temporal variation of magma chemistry in association with extinction of seafloor spreading. The fossilized APR is distant from the known hot spots, and consists of older N-MORB prior to extinction of spreading and younger E-MORB after extinction. The older N-MORB (3.5-6.4 Ma) occur in the southeast flank of the P3 segment (PR3) and the younger E-MORB (1.4-3.1 Ma) comprise a huge seamount at the P3 segment (SPR) and a big volcanic edifice at the P2 segment (PR2). The N-type PR3 basalts have higher Mg#, K/Ba, and CaO/Al2O3 and lower Zr/Y, Sr, and Na8.0 with slight enrichment in incompatible elements and almost flat REE patterns. The E-type SPR and PR2 basalts are highly enriched in incompatible elements and LREE. The extinction of spreading occurring at 3.3 Ma seems to have led to a temporal magma oversupply with E-MORB signatures. Geochemical signatures such as Ba/TiO2, Ba/La, and Sm/La suggest heterogeneity of upper mantle and formation of E-MORB by higher contribution of enriched materials to mantle melting, compared to N-MORB environment. E-MORB magmas beneath the APR seem to have been produced by low melting degree (up to 1% or more) at deeper low-temperature regime, where metasomatized veins consisting of pyroxenites have preferentially participated in the melting. The occurrence of E-MORB at the APR is a good example to better understand what kinds of magmatism would occur in association with extinction of spreading.

  • We fabricated and characterized RWG-DFB-LDs emitting at $1.3\mu\textrm{m}$ wavelength. For fabrication of the laser diode, inteference fringe of optical beams was used for grating formation and epi layers were grown by LPE. The fablicated RWG-DFB-LD operated in a single longitudinal mode with more than 30 dB SMSR at 1296.5 nm emitting wavelength and its threshold current was 67 mA. Coupling coefficient (K) was estimated as $40cm^{-1}$ by means of stop-band measurement. Finally, we show that the RWG-DFB-LD fabricated in this experiment can be applicable as light source of 2.5 Gbps optical communication system from the fact that the small signal response of the RWG-DFB-LD rated up to 1.99 GHz at pre-bias level of $1.2 I_{th}$..

  • The densification behavior and strength of sintered reaction bonded silicon nitrides (SRBSN) that contain $Lu_2O_3-SiO_2$ additives were improved by the addition of fine Si powder. Dense specimens (relative density: 99.5%) were obtained by gas-pressure sintering (GPS) at $1850^{\circ}C$ through the addition of fine Si. In contrast, the densification of conventional specimens did not complete at $1950^{\circ}C$. The fine Si decreased the onset temperature of shrinkage and increased the shrinkage rate because the additive helped the compaction of green bodies and induced the formation of fine $Si_3N_4$ particles after nitridation and sintering at and above $1600^{\circ}C$. The amount of residual $SiO_2$ within the specimens was not strongly affected by adding fine Si powder because most of the $SiO_2$ layer that had formed on the fine Si particles decomposed during nitridation. The maximum strength and fracture toughness of the specimens were 991 MPa and $8.0MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively.

  • Purpose: The objective of this study was to elucidate the role of collagen membranes (CMs) when used in conjunction with bovine hydroxyapatite particles incorporated with collagen matrix (BHC) for lateral onlay grafts in dogs. Methods: The first, second, and third premolars in the right maxilla of mongrel dogs (n=5) were extracted. After 2 months of healing, two BHC blocks ($4mm{\times}4mm{\times}5mm$) were placed on the buccal ridge, one with and one without the coverage by a CM. The animals were sacrificed after 8 weeks for histometric analysis. Results: The collagen network of the membranes remained and served as a barrier. The quantity and quality of bone regeneration were all significantly greater in the membrane group than in the no-membrane group (P<0.05). Conclusions: The use of barrier membranes in lateral onlay grafts leads to superior new bone formation and bone quality compared with bone graft alone.
