Effect of Organic Matter Application on Heavy Metal Uptake of Infant Rice Seedling (어린모의 중금속(重金屬) 흡수(吸收)에 미치는 유기물(有機物) 시용(施用) 효과(效果))

  • To investigate effects of organic matter application on heavy metal uptake of infant rice seeding, the various amount of organic matter(peat and $Bio-com^{(R)}$)was applied on Cd or Cu treated nursery bed soil. No growth difference was observed up to 20mg/kg of Cu treatment. Above 20mg/kg of Cu treatment, the seeding height and top dry weight were decreased but the Cu uptake by seeding was increased with increasing Cu treatment level. The mat formation was poor above 20mg/kg of Cu treatment, however, the seeding peat application level. All peat treatment resulted better mat formation than control. The seeding height and top dry increasing Cd treatment level. The mat formation was not effected by either Cd treatment level or organic matter sources. The effect of peat and $Bio-com{(R)}$ application on Cd uptake by infant rice seeding was not observed at all Cd treatments level.

Studies on the Application of Byproduct Composts as Substitute for Yacto in Yang-jik Nursery of Ginseng (인삼 양직모밭 약토대체 부산물퇴비 시용 연구)

  • This study was carried out to select economical byproduct composts as the substitute for the traditional organic fertilizer, Yacto, in the cultivation of ginseng seedlings, and to investigate the application method of a selected compost. Among tested byproduct composts, popped rice hull compost was the best substitute for Yacto, while the application of domestic animal manure composts resulted in red skinned roots of ginseng seedlings. Optimal mixing ratio of the popped rice hull compost with virgin soil (fine sand) were 3~4 : 1 in bulk, showing the same root yield compared to that of conventional seedbed soil. When the popped rice hull compost was lower than $1\;{\pm}\;0.1%$ in nitrogen content, the expeller cake of oil seed was added to seedbed soil to rise nitrogen content until $1\;{\pm}\;0.1%$.

Determination of the Temperature Increasing Value of Seedling Nursery Period for Oryza2000 Model to Applicate Grid Weather Data (Oryza2000 모형 활용을 위한 육묘기 보온 상승온도 결정)

  • Spatial simulation of crop growth often requires application of management conditions to each cell. In particular, it is of great importance to determine the temperature conditions during the nursery period for rice seedlings, which would affect heading date projections. The objective of this study was to determine the value of TMPSB, which is the parameter of ORYZA2000 model to represent temperature increase under a plastic tunnel during the rice seedling periods. Candidate values of TMPSB including 0℃, 2℃, 5℃, 7℃ and 9℃ were used to simulate rice growth and yield. Planting dates were set from mid-April to mid-June. The simulations were performed at four sites including Cheorwon, Suwon, Seosan, and Gwangju where climate conditions at rice fields common in Korea can be represented. It was found that the TMPSB values of 0℃ and 2℃ resulted in a large variation of heading date due to low temperature occurred in mid-April. When the TMPSB value was >7℃, the variation of heading date was relatively small. Still, the TMPSB value of 5℃ resulted in the least variation of heading date for all the planting dates. Our results suggested that the TMPSB value of 5℃ would help reasonable assessment of climate change impact on rice production when high resolution gridded weather data are used as inputs to ORYZA2000 model over South Korea.

Low-Input and Energy Efficiency of Direct Seeding Method in Rice (벼 직파재배 노동력 투입 및 에너지 효율성 비교)

  • One of the most laborious work in rice farming is transplanting of rice seedling which has been required preparation of nursery bed and care of seedling during one month period. In this research, direct seeding in dry paddy(DS) and direct seeding in wet paddy(WS) were practiced to compare with traditional transplanting(TP) in Suwon. Growth stages in direct seeding were delayed as its planting time was about 21 days later than those of TP. Heading stage of direct seeding at Suwon was delayed about 9 days as compared to transplanting culture. Rice yield was not different between the seeding practises. Working-hour saving was about 17%(DS) and 28%(WS). Production cost of direct seeding was decreased 20%(DS) and 32%(WS), respectively. Amount of rice production per a unit working-hour in direct seeding could increase 14%(DS) and 39%(WS) compared to that of TP, respectively. Therefore, direct seeding could save significantly working hour and production cost without reducing rice yield. WS was more effective than DS in saving labor and production cost. Direct seeding was not efficient method in input of farming energy and agricultural chemicals.

Effects of Mulching Materials on Growth of Allium tuberosum Rottler and Weed Control

  • This study was carried out to elucidate the effect of mulching materials on the growth of Chinese chive (Allium tuberusum Rottler) and weed control. Chinese chive was grown under five mulching materials, pine leaf, oak leaf, rice straw, rice hull and sawdust, at the Experimental Farm of Chungbuk National University from June 20, 2009 to September 30, 2009. Amaranthus mangostunus, Digitaria sanguinalis, Portuclaca. oleracea, Echinochioa crus-galli var. frumetacea and Setaria viridis were dominant weeds. Both pine and oak leaves were significantly effective mulching materials in terms of weed control indices in both nursery and field. Soil moisture contents were 1.2~3.7% higher in mulching, especially in oak leaf mulching. Mulching with pine leaf significantly increased plant height, sheath length, leaf length, bulb-, root- and leaf-weights and yield of Chinese chive, but there were no significant differences among the other mulching materials although better than those in non-mulching.

  • In fact, rice cultivation technique from 1962 to 1970 was very slight, but this technique from 1970 to now was remarkably developed in Korea, it was due to development of high fretilizer responsive and lodging resistant variety, Tongil; ie. Ind. ${\times}$ Japonica remote-cross rice variety. The main factors of this development is as follow: Firstly the most farmer (more than 90%) used newly developed seedling growth method; polyethylene film covered protected nursery bed. Secondly date of transplanting (middle or late part. of May) was earlier 10-15days than before 1970. Thirdly new varieties were highly lodging resistant at high fertilizer level $(N-P_2O_5-K_2O:15-9-11 kg/l0a)$. However, this level is 50% increased one than it for Japonica varieties. At forth planting density increased up to 75-80 hills per $3.3m^2$. Added to these factors, farm labor shortage and wage increase due to economic development gave a chance for introduction of transplanting machine to farmer in 1977. It's use increased for 100, 800 ha in 1981. The most of farmers are using herbicides and weed control system dependoing on wood composition has been established and disseminated to farmer.

Fused Phosphate and Slag as a Fertilizer in Nursery of Rice (묘대(苗垈)에서 용성인비(熔成燐肥)와 규산질비료(珪酸質肥料)의 효과)

  • Fused phosphate and slag have used as a sources of phosphate and silicate fertilizers. In order to find out effects of these fertilizers on the growth of young rice plants in nursery, relationships between dry matter production and nutrient uptake at different fertilizer application rates were investigated for two rice varieties, Milyang 23 (a Indica-Japonica hybrid) and Akibare (a Japonica). The results were summarized as followers; 1. The maximum dry matter production was obtained at 75-150 kg/10a of fused phospate and 100-200 kg/10a of slag, respectively, however, a some variations between varieties were recognized. 2. The top/root ratio of varieties around 1.0 was proper for healty see dings and this ratio was reached at application of 75 kg/10a of fused phosphate and 200 kg/10a of slag. 3. The efficiency of applied silicate of rice seedlings was higher in fused phosphate than in slag. 4. The growth of seedling was severely retarded when soil pH was increased above 7 by the application of more than 225 kg/10a of fused phospahte and 400 kg/10a of slag.

Effect of Density Variation on the Natural Enemies and Rice Pests by Application Method and Time of Carbofuran Granules (Carbofuran 입제의 처리방법 및 시기가 벼의 해충과 천적의 밀도에 미치는 영향)

  • Studies were conducted to investigate the effect of Carbofuran 3G on the density variation of rice pests and their natural enemies in case the insecticide was treated two times as compared with usual trials in paddy field. Even the two times application of Carbofuran 3G in the nursery boxes of machine transplanting and paddy water trials obtain same results to pests, small brown planthopper (Laodelphax striatllus), green rice leafhopper (Nephotettix cincticeps), brown planthorper (Nilaparvata lugens), white back planthopper (Sogotella furcifera), rice stem bore (Chilo suppressalis), rice stem maggot (Chlorops oryzae), rice thrips (cloethrips oryzae) as compared with usual trials. The density of natural enemies, spiders and egg parasite, Anagrus sp. of planthoppers in the two times application part of Carbofuran 3G increased 2.4 fold as compared with usual trials.

Anaerobic Direct Seeder Engineering Component of the Rice Anaerobic Seeding Technology

  • Direct-seeded rice can have comparable yield with transplanted rice if its inherent problems can be solved. It is a labor-saving technology and can significantly reduce production cost because seedling nursery , pulling , and transplanting are omitted. Turnaround time between cropping is reduced hence the possibility of a third annual crop. But direct-seeded rice is very vulnerable to pest attack (by birds, rats, and golden snails), desiccation, weed infestation, and prone to lodging resulting to unstable crop establishment and inconsistent yield. These problems can be solved by anaerobic seeding (sowing pre-germinated seeds under the soil). It requires precise seed placement into the soil to optimize its benefits. We developed a four-row anaerobic direct seeder (US $ 200 commercial price) for this purpose . It consist of a structural framework mounted with a drum -hopper metering device, flotation type drivewheels, spring-loaded and adjustable furrow closers, and furrow open rs, and a plastic rainguard. It can sow in line pre-germinated seeds into the soil thus permitting the use of mechanical weeders for a chemical-free weed control. Its performance was comparable with the Japanese two-row anaerobic seeder (costing US$400) in terms of seed placement and crop establishment. It was tested with five cultivars. Seeding rate varied from 38 kg/ha to 80kg/ha. Crop establishment ranged from 64 to 99 percent while grain yield varied from 3.0 t/ha to 5.4t/ha. A six-row anaerobic seeder was also developed and adapted to a powertiller for increased capacity , field efficiency , and easier operation. The anaerobic seeder is useful to farmers shifting to direct seeding to reduce rice production cost and to researchers conducting agronomic studies in direct-seeded rice. Effect of the Seeding Rate and Nursery Period on the Growth and Characteristics of Seeding for Rice Transplanter (수도(水稻)의 파종밀도(播種密度)와 육묘일수(育苗日數)가 기계이앙용(機械移秧用) 상자묘(箱子苗)의 생장(生長)과 소질(素質)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • Effect of the seeding rate and nursery period on the growth and characteristics of seedling suitable for rice transplanter was analyzed and the following results were obtained. The optimum seeding rate were about 100 to 150g in the 30 day old seedling, and 150g per nursery box in the 25day old seedling, respectively, as having adequate leaf number, plant height, dry weight, hardiness and crop growth rate for transplanting. Excessively low and high seeding rate resulted in excessive aging and weakness of the seedling at the later growth stages.
