A new malting barley variety, 'Baegho', was developed from a cross between Azuma Golden and Nishinochikara in 1998. An elite line, YMB2139-2B-1-10-2, was selected in 2005 and designated as Milyang137. It showed good agronomic performance in the regional adaptation yield trials (RYT) from 2006 to 2008 and was released with the name of 'Baegho' having high yielding and BaYMV and powdery mildew resistance. The average heading and maturing dates of 'Baegho' were April 21 and May 28, which were 3 and 2 day later than those of Hopum, check variety, at the RYT, respectively. 'Baegho' has shoter culm length (78 cm), more spikes ($1,062per\;m^2$) and heavier 1,000 grain weight (40.7 g) than those of Hopum, respectively. 'Baegho' is resistant to domestic BaYMV strains I, III and IV and powdery mildew at Iksan. In growth habit, 'Baegho' is close to type (IV) that is distinguished from other Korean malting barley cultivars, which could tolerant to premature heading damage that is major concern for the practice of the malting barley cropping. The yield potential of 'Baegho' in the RYT was about 5.57 MT/ha, which is about 13% higher than those of Hopum. This variety has good malting quality in grain and malting analysis showed better 1,000 grain weight, husk rate, diastatic power than those of Hopum. 'Baegho' applied for protection of new varieties of plant in 2009.
Four rice cultivars (two japonicas and two japonica x indica hybrids) were grown in the hydroponic medium in order to investigate the photorespiration rate and ribulose-1, 5-bisphorphate carboxylase (EC 4, 1, 1;39) activity. The results were as follows: 1. Photorespiration rate was increased by the increasing light intensity as well as photosynthesis until light saturation point. Hangangchalbyeo of a hybrid variety had higher photorespiration rate than two japonicas(Jiniubyeo and Seolakbyeo) and one hybrid(Nampungbyeo) tested at ear formation stage. 2. Ribulose-1, 5-bisphosphate carborylase of hybrids were very sensitive to temperature showing lower activities at low temperature and much higher activities at high temperature than that of japonicas.
Two dimensional non-parametric model using daily mean temperature and daylength as predictor variables was established and daily developmental rates (DVR) for the period of seedling emergence to heading were estimated for 26 rice cultivars by using data from field direct seeding dates and short-day treatments experiment carried out at experimental farm of Seoul National University in 1990. Three existing parametric models were tested for the comparision of predictability with non-parametric model. The non-parametric model was found to be superior to parametric models in predicting heading date. The developmetal indice(DVI) at heading date, cummulative DVR's from seedling emergence showed 0.5 to 2.2 percent of coefficient of variations. The non-parametric model revealed errors of 0 to three days in 11 varieties when applied to data independent of those used in estimating DVR.
Three rice cultivars, Aichi-asahi, Toyotama and Yamabiko, possessing a resistance gene $Pi-\alpha$ were evaluated for penetration, hyphal growth in the leaf epidermis and lesion formation using 6 isolates of Pyricularia oryzae by treating pre- and post disposing temperatures of $23/15^{\circ}C\;and\;29/21^{\circ}C$ (day/night) regimes, respectively. Percent penetration of the fungus was higher on the seedlings disposed at $29/21^{\circ}C$ regime and more lesions were formed at 7 days after inoculation than at $23/15^{\circ}C$ regime. Degree of hyphal growth and number of host cells with hyphal growth were remarkably increased from 72 to 96 hr after inoculation at $29/21^{\circ}C$ regime. However, lesion formation on the seedlings disposed at $23/15^{\circ}C$ regime was delayed, possibly as a result of the suppressed hyphal growth until 96 hr after inoculation.
High density (HD) grains is associated with seedling vigor. Studies were conducted on the relationship of different grain densities and vascular bundle(VB) development and seedling growth. IR58 (indica type) and Unbong 7 (japonica type) were used in this experiment. HD grains had more and bigger VB in the leaf blade and sheath than poor density grain at seedling stage. IR58 had more large VB at the leaf compared with Unbong 7. Higher development of VB in seedling of HD grains can increase transport of assimilate and growth rate. Plant height, leaf number, root growth and dry weight increased with increasing grain density from poor to high. The total area of large VB in the leaf blade and sheath was highly correlated with the dry weight. Higher number and larger area of VB and dry weight can be obtained by using HD grains and these initial advantages can contribute to high yield potential.
The fractions extracted with methylene chloride from colored rice seeds of 19 cultivars were prepared to examine the correlationties of both antimutagenicity and antioxidiativity with physiological functionalities. The data revealed a positive correlation of the antimutagenicity with the content of $(3.{\beta},22Z)-Acetate-stigmasta-5,22-dien-3-ol$, 24-Oxocholesterol acetate, 6(E),8(E)-Heptadiene, and Eicosane. For antioxidativity, electron donating ability to DPPH radicals exhibited a positive correlation with the content of (24R,25S)-Aplysterylacetate, however, negative correlations were found between scavenging activity toward hydroxyl radicals and the content of either Tetradecanoic acid or Methyl ester-hexadecanoic acid, $(3.{\beta},24S)-Stigmast-5-en-3-ol$, respectively. In addition, a positive correlation was detected between the inhibitory effect of the fractions and the content of $(3.{\beta},24S)-Stigmast-5-en-3-ol$, however, a negative correlation with the content of 3',3'-Dimethylspiro [acridane-9,1'-indane], $(3.{\beta})-24-Methylene-9,19-cyclolanostan-3-ol$, and some other compounds was observed, respectively.
Five rice cultivars were treated by four dose of butachlor at transplanting seedling stage. Visual injury rate by butachlor was lowest in Zhy-Lian-Ai-dun-Nam and highest in Samseungbyeo, but reduction of yield was higher in Zhy-Lian-Ai-Yun-Nam and Hangangchalbyeo than in Samseungbyeo and Cheungcheungbyeo. Reduction of panicle number by butachlor was most effective factor to yield reduction.
The variations of the anther and pistil length of some rice cultivars at the different planting density and fertility levels were tested and their inheritance mode was studied. The anther length of a spikelet on a secondary panicle branch was longer than the one of a spikelet on a primary panicle branch. In the cultivar Z97B, both the anther and the pistil length were increased slightly along the increased plant-ing spacings, But, in the cultivar IR43 no general tendency was observed. The fertilizer levels applied n the field did not affect both the anther and pistil length of a given cultivar. In a cross of IR56/IR8, the anther length showed continuous variation with longer anther being recessive in the F2 population. While, the pistil length showed a continuous variation with longer pistil being over-dominance. In all of the crosses which IR56 involved, the general and specific combining abilities were high for both the anther and pistil length. The broad sense heritability for anther length was 0.46, and for pistil length was 0.88. The correlation coefficients of anther length and pistil length were 0.33 for phenotypic and 0.44 for geno-typic.
Two rice cultivars infected by Gibberella fujikuroi, were tested to investigate the sequential change of disease development in the field conditions. In the preliminary test, the seeds of Nongbaek and an unknown cultivar showed 21 and $31.7\%$ infection by C. fuiikuroi. At the late stage of water nursery bed, some seedlings produced typical elongation symptom of bakanae disease and most of the leaves were dried up within a few days after transplanting. Out of the healthy looking seedlings, some plants also developed bakanae symptoms from middle June being two week after transplanting and the number was increased until middle September.

The severe damage induced by the important viruses of Rice stripe virus (RSV), Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV), Melon necrotic spot virus (MNSV), Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) and Tomato bushy stunt virus (TBSV) was described on major crops in Korea. In 2007, the plot incidence rate of RSV was 100% on the precocious rice cultivars at the Western coastal provinces of Gyeonggido, Chungcheongnamdo, Jellabugdo and Jellanamdo, and Jejudo. RSV occurred in 2,441 ha with incidence rate of 70% over at 5 areas of Seocheon, Seosan, Boryung, Hongsung and Buyou in Chungcheongnamdo. At 4 areas of Buan, Gimje, Gunsan and Gochang in Jellabukdo, RSV occurred in 2.016 ha. CGMMV occurred on watermelon in 4.6 ha at Cheongyang area, and its outbreak was also 890 ha on oriental melon for 120 farmers with the incidence area of 23% against total cultivation areas of Seongju. MNSV was recorded firstly on watermelon in 2006 at Andong and it spread to 3 areas of Hapcheon, Gochang and Yanggu. TSWV occurred firstly at Danggin in Chungcheongnamdo in 2005. TSWV in 2006 spread to 6 areas; Taian, Hongsung and Seosan in Chungcheongnando, Namwon in Jellabukdo, and Sunchon and Kwangju in Jellanamdo. In 2007, TSWV covered 17 areas of western and southern parts; the 5 area including Taian in Chungcheongnamdo, Kwangju in Jellanamdo, Bucheon in Gyunggido, and so forth. TBSV was described firstly on table tomato at Sacheon in Kyungsangnamdo in 2004. TBSV occurred on cherry tomato at Chungju in 2006 and on table tomato at Busan area.
