Brown planthopper(BPH) is one of the most destructive insect pests of rice. The use of genetically resistant cultivars has proven to be a more economical, efficient and environment friendly means to combat this pest. This study was carried out to investigate the relationship between BPH resistant gene, Bph18 and yield components of rice using DH(doubled haploid) lines derived from 'Saenuri'/SR30071-3-7-23-6-1-1-1. SR30071-3-7-23-6-1-1-1 line has Bph18 gene derived from wild species, Oryza australiensis. BPH resistant gene, Bph18 shortened heading days, enlarged culm length and panicle length and reduced ratio of ripened grains of rice. The results indicate that backcrossing breeding is necessary to develop elite cultivars carrying Bph18 gene.
The proteins from functional rice cultivars (Nogwonchalbyeo, Giant embryonic, Arhyangchalbyeo, and Goamibyeo) and general white rice were extracted and separated using two-dimensional (2D) gel electrophoresis. A wide variation in the molecular weight (MW) and pH range of the expressed proteins in rice samples were observed. The green-kerneled rice (Nogwonchalbyeo) exhibited proteins with MW of 9-57 kDa and appeared at a pH range of 4-7. The Giant embryonic contained proteins with MW of 31-63 kDa and a pH range of 5-6. The aromatic glutinous rice (Arhyangchalbyeo) showed proteins with MW of 24-28 and pH of 5.8-6.8. The high-amylose rice (Goamibyeo) exhibited proteins with MW of 3-63 and pH of 5.2-5.6. The identified proteins uniquely found and highly expressed in each cultivar may have a significant role on rice functionality. The results illustrate that the 2D gel electrophoresis is a valuable method in the determination of the protein expression profiles in functional rice grains and may be useful in the identification of specific marker proteins associated with the functional property of rice.

Rice panicle blast is one of the most serious diseases threatening stable rice production by causing severe damage to rice yields and quality. The disease is easy to occur under low air temperature and frequent heavy rainfall during the heading season of rice. In 2021, a rice panicle blast severely occurred in the Jeonbuk province of Korea. The incidence area of panicle blast accounted for 27.7% of the rice cultivation area of Jeonbuk province in 2021, which was 13.7-times higher than in 2019 and 2.6-times higher than in 2020. This study evaluated the incidence areas of rice panicle blast in each region of Jeonbuk province in 2021. The weather conditions during the heading season of rice, mainly cultivated rice cultivars, and the race diversity of the Jeonbuk isolates were also investigated. It will provide important information for the effective control of the rice panicle blast.
Germination is controlled by internal factors of seeds and external factors such as water, temperature and light. We investigated the relationship between germination characteristics of four waxy rice cultivars and patterns of water uptake, antioxidant enzymes and free soluble sugars during early imbibition. Seed viabilities by tetrazolium test of four different rice cultivars were higher than 95% and germination rates of the hulled rice seeds were on 95% average. However, germination rate of intact rice among four cultivars showed a big difference depending on temperature. Water uptake of hulled and intact rice seeds during imbibition reached a stationary phase at around 30% moisture content. Although rates of water uptake were faster in hulled rice and high temperature than intact rice and low temperature condition, difference of those among cultivars was greater under low temperature than high temperature. The time required for rice seeds to uptake 30% water was negatively correlated with percentage of germination, germination energy, germination speed and mean germination time. Guaiacol peroxidase activity at 24h of imbibition was correlated with germination energy and germination speed but not percentage of germination. Catalase activity, soluble protein and maltose concentration at 24h of imbibition were not correlated with characteristics of germination. These results suggest that a time required for rice seeds to uptake 30% of water significantly correlated with germination and guaiacol peroxidase activity during early imbibition plays an important role in initiation of germination.

Black-colored rice contains anthocyanin, which has an antioxidant function on the seed coat. Anthocyanin content is greatly affected by the cultivation environment, especially the average temperature during the ripening stage. Generally, low temperatures during the ripening stage increase anthocyanin content. To control the average temperature during ripening stage in the field, transplanting time has to be regulated. In this study, anthocyanin content variation was examined in relation to the transplanting time and the average temperature during the ripening stage. For the study, fourteen black-colored rice cultivars with different maturity types (four of early-maturing, five of medium-maturing, and five of medium-late maturing) were selected. The transplanting times used were May 20, June 5, June 20, and June 30. The field experiment was conducted in the Miryang, Kyoungsangnamdo province, Korea from 2014 to 2017. The anthocyanin content in all cultivars was higher when the transplanting time was delayed, and the highest anthocyanin content was observed in the transplanting on June 30. Variation in anthocyanin content according to the change in transplanting time is the greatest in the early maturing cultivars. The least change was observed in medium maturing cultivars. Regression analysis showed a significant correlation between temperature and anthocyanin content, but the degree of correlation was very low in the medium maturing cultivar. As a result, the optimal average temperature during the grain filling stage for increasing the anthocyanin content of black colored rice was $22{\sim}23^{\circ}C$. The rice yield increased in plants transplanted until June 20 and decreased thereafter owing to low temperature during the grain filling stage. The anthocyanin content increased with delaying the transplanting time up to June 30 but the rice yield decreased after June 20. Nevertheless, the rate of increase in anthocyanin content was higher than the rate of decrease in rice yield. As a result, the optimum transplanting time and an average temperature of grain filling stage for black-colored rice variety were June 30 and $23{\sim}24^{\circ}C$ considering both anthocyanin content and rice yield.
This study was conducted with two objectives ; one was to select the suitable soybean cultivars for cultivation in paddy field and the other was to establish the environment-friendly rotational cropping system of soybean instead of rice in paddy field. In order to evaluate growth adaptation and yields, Eve soybean cultivars were cultivated in Yeoncheon, Keonggi province, with two cultivation methods such as level row and high ridge. Growth of the top plants, such as stem length, number of branches, diameter of stem, were higher in high ridge than in level row, however, the differences among the cultivars were bigger than those between the cultivation methods. Dry weight of top plant was significantly different among the cultivars during whole growth stages, however, it was higher in level row than in high ridge at V5 stage while it became higher in high ridge as growth progressed. Roots were more developed in high ridge than in level row during whole growth stages. T/R ratio in level row was higher than that in high ridge. During whole growth stages, significant differences were observed among the cultivars in growth and yields in each cultivation method and yields of Eunhakong was the highest. In results, number of nodules and T/R ratio at V5 stage, number of pods at R2 stage, and number of seeds and T/R ratio at R5 stage had highly correlated with yields, respectively.
This study was carried out to understand the varietal variation in physicochemical properties of rice grain and those environmental changes by different transplanting time, and to elucidate the interrelationships among the factors related with eating quality of cooked rice. Fifty three rice samples, among which fifty samples were harvested at ordinary or late transplanted plots of the Crop Experiment Station in Suwon and three samples were harvested orpurchased from Niigata prefecture in Japan, were tested for various physicochemical components of rice grain and some physical factors of cooked rice. All of twenty seven rice cultivars tested were the recent-bred Korean japonica rice showing the wide range of maturity from early to medium-late heading and considerable difference in palatability of cooked rice. Amylose content, taste value by Nireco palatability tester (TVN), iodine blue color of cooking extracts(IB), and the ratio of IB /extracted solid amounts (ES) increased significantly by late transplanting, while viscosity (VN) and Mg / K. N value by Nireco tester, hot-water absorption of milled rice (HA), loss tangent of cooked rice by Rheolograph-Micro(LT), and most viscogram characteristics except setback viscosity (C-P) decreased drastically by late transplanting as compared with ordinary transplanting. Most of physicochemical properties of milled rice revealed narrower varietal variation in lately transplanted plot than in ordinary transplanted one. Protein content (PRO), volume expansion rate of cooked rice(VE), C-P and all physical factors of cooked rice by Rheolograph-Micro showed almost negligible seasonal variation, while amylose content (AM), VN, HA, IB/ES, peak viscosity(P), hot viscosity(H) and breakdown(P-H) viscosity exhibited considerably large seasonal variation. The early-headed varieties revealed lower amylose content and smaller seasonal variation of IB/ES compared with medium or medium-late headed rice varieties. AM was closely associatied with IB and IB / ES and VN was highly correlated with Mg/K. N and TVN in both ordinary and late transplanted plots. VN also was highly negatively correlated with cooking characteristics and highly positively correlated with viscogram properties in ordinary culture. PRO was closely connected with moisture content of milled rice and L T in ordinary transplanted plot. IB, which was closely connected with ES, was also singificantly associated LT, P and P-H in ordinary seasonal culture. IB/ES was highly negatively correlated with P, P-Hand P-H / C-P in ordinary culture but with LT and dynamic viscosity of cooked rice in late seasonal culture. The thirty rice cultivars were largely classified into two varietal groups by cluster analysis with physicochemical properties related with eating quality of cooked rice. Korean and Japanese high-quality rice cultivars were separately distributed in two respective varietal group.
Thytealexin activities were investigated in compatible and incompatible combinations between rice cultivars and races of Pyricularia oryzae by using the spore-germination test in the diffusates from surface of leaf-blade treated with the spore suspensions. In compatible and incompatible combinations between nine cultivars of rice and three races of the fungus, phytoalexin activities were recognized in all combinations, and were much higher in incompatible combinations than in compatible combinations with significant differences. Activities of phytoalexin were increased with the time, and maximal peaks of them were at 36 hours after inoculation, and thereafter decreased. The activities were generally decreased in all combination by heavy applications of nitrogen fertilizer, especially in incompatible combinations. On the other hand, fresh juices from leaves of rice cultivars which were not inoculated with the fungus showed no phytoalexin activities.

Using two japonica rice cultivars (Ilpumbyeo and Sanghaehyanghyella), which are distinguishable by the brown planthopper (BHP) resistance maker (R208), a relationship between the BPH resistance gene (Os-Bil) and salt-tolerance was investigated. To do this, changes in the expression level of Os-Bil by the salt stress were quantified by the real-time PCR in the two cultivars, and compared with those in other two indica rice cultivars (Pokkali and IR29). In Ilpumbyeo, the expression level of Os-Bil decreased by the treatments of 50 and 200 mM NaCl in a concentration-dependent manner, and in Sanghaehyanghyella it rather increased slightly at 50 mM but decreased drastically at 200 mM. Comparably, IR29, a salt-sensitive cultivar, showed a reduction of the Os-Bil gene expression after the treatment of 100 mM NaCl, but Pokkali, a salt-tolerance cultivar, rather increased about two times in the level of Os-Bil transcripts. These results suggest that the BPH resistance gene may involve in the difference in the salt-tolerance at least between the two indica rice cultivars.
The response of rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars to mixtures of 2, 4-D(2, 4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) and other herbicides was investigated to determine if there was an interaction between them. When 2, 4-D was applied, shoot growth of Taipei 309 was more affected than that of IR28 at all concentrations used. In contrast, when thiobencarb (S-[(4-chlorophenyl)methyl]diethylcarbamothioate), butachlor [N-(buthoxymethyl) -2-chloro-N-(2, 6-diethylphenyl) acetamide], and glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] were applied, the shoot growth of Taipei 309 was less affected than that of IR28 at all herbicide concentrations. Combination of 2, 4-D and the lowest thiobencarb concentration was antagonistic for shoot length for both cultivars, but at higher concentrations, it was synergistic. Synergism for shoot fresh weight between 2, 4-D and thiobencarb was observed with IR28 at all concentrations but, for Taipei 309, synergism was observed only at lower 2, 4-D concentrations. Mixing 2. 4-D with butachlor resulted in greater inhibition in shoot length and fresh weight of IR28 than Taipei 309 at all concentrations indicating a synergistic interaction. With combinations of 2, 4-D and glyphosate, an antagonistic interaction for shoot length was observed for both cultivars. A synergistic interaction for shoot fresh weight was observed with IR28 when combinations of the highest concentration of glyphosate and 2, 4-D were applied but there was an antagonistic interaction with Taipei 309.
