The development of Korean glaze originated from the development of ash glazes. Ash not only has strong solubility but also can shows the glaze a variety of different colors according to what the glaze has in it as the main component. In addition, it gives a feeling of lucidness and softness. For these reasons, there are a lot of needs for ash and many potters want to take advantage of ashes as glaze. But natural ashes have not been widely used as glaze primarily because it is relatively hard to find or manufacture. Considering the difficulty of finding or manufacturing natural ashes, this study aims to formulate synthetic ash which not only is available to the potters in general but also has the sam ε characteristics as the natural ashes. To achieve this aim, this study examines the characteristics of the pine tree ash, the main component of the glaze of celadon porcelains, and the red pepper stem ash, the main component of the brown glaze, both of which have been used by the Korean traditional potters. In this study, the alkaline component of the glaze. A important ingredient when the ashes are synthesized, was supplied by mixing of $Na_2CO_3$, Chungju limestone and rice straw ash. Furthermore, the synthetic ash, when it shows no change of pH in its composition rate of 6:2:2, was found to be usable as the most stable material. In conclusion, the formula which frits some raw $materials-Na_2CO_3$, Chungju limestone and rice straw ash-can duplicate the synthetic ash which is simila to the natural ash.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the heritabilities, phenotypic correlation, genetic correlation and path-coefficients for desirable characters on the lodging related traits. Characters, that had high relation degree with field lodging degree, were rice-straw length, Wl /P, W/I, Wl /d, L, Wl / A, W/l, P, W $s^2$/ $l^4$ etc. Breaking strength appear negative correlation having an intention to field lodging. The second inertia moment of culm diameter trunk (branch), cross section area, rice-straw thickness and trunk cross section didn't appear negative coefficient with field lodging. It is considered that rice-straw length, leaf dry weight and lodging index, because of high heritability, become selection index of characters for breeding. In direct, indirect effect, and right rice-straw wall thickness appear largest( $P_{7y}$=0.6904), the next is the order of leaf dry weight( $P_{3y}$=0.2848), root dry weight ( $P_{1y}$=0.2658), culm diameter ( $P_{6y}$=-0.2280), and negative relation appear the order of rice-straw length ( $P_{5y}$=-0.9640) and stem dry weight( $P_{2y}$=-0.7072), therefore, the smaller culm length and stem dry weight, the stronger to lodging. to lodging.
A field experiment was conducted to compare the effects of compost and rice straw application on the growth of soybean, chemical properties and soil microorganism in newly reclaimed silty clay loamy upland soil. Application rates of the arganic materials were 750 Kg, 1,500 Kg and 3,000 Kg/10a in compost, and 340 Kg, 680 Kg and 1,360 Kg/10a in rice straw. The differences of N.P.K. application rates caused by the two different organic materials were balanced by chemical fertilizers of N.P.K. The results can be summarized as follows; 1. The yield of soybean was increased upon compost application, but no significant difference on yield was observed except luxuriant plant growth upon rice straw application. 2. There was highly possitive correlation between concentration of phosphorous, potassium in soybean plant at 71 days after planting and dry weight of grain vs. stem plus bean chaff of harvest plant in compost applied plots, but no correlation was found in rice straw applied plots. 3. In greneral, the soil water contents in organic material applied plots, expecially in plots of rice straw, were higher than in no organic material plots. However, at wilting point, the soil water content in organic material applied plot was lower compare to no organic material plot. 4. The weight of nodules per soybean plant was heavier notwithstanding the fewer number of soil bacteria and fungi in compost application plots than rice straw application plots.
This study was conducted to investigate methane emission among rice ecotypes in paddy soil (Jeonbug series). The varieties of rice involved early maturing short-grain variety, Samcheonbyeo, middle maturing variety, Hawsungbyeo and late maturing variety, Dongjinbyeo. The seasonal change of methane flux was high from ear formation stage to heading stage. It was found that the methane flux was tended to be lower in early maturing variety than in the mid-to-late maturing variety. The plots without rice straw reduced methane emission as much as 46% relative to rice straw application. The methane emission rate through rice stem was highly correlated with temperature fluctuation. Methane emission on ecotypes by rice straw application was 0.394 g $m^{-2}day^{-1}$ in early maturing variety (Samcheonbyeo), 0.407 g $m^{-2}day^{-1}$ in mid maturing variety(Hawsungbyeo), 0.411 g $m^{-2}day^{-1}$ in late maturing variety(Dongjinbyeo).

This study was performed to select the soil covering materials for winter safety of Cynanchum wilfordii Hemsley and to investigate the effect on the growth after overwinter. Soil covering materials such as vinyl, rice straw, lagging cover, vinyl+lagging cover, and non-covering were investigated how effect on overwintering rate, growth and yield of Cynanchum wilfordii Hemsley. In changes of soil temperature according to the soil covering materials, non-covering treatment was recorded the highest to $26.7^{\circ}C$, and lagging cover and rice straw showed little change of soil temperature with 9.2 and $9.3^{\circ}C$, respectively. Regrowth rates of early growth after overwinter were lowered in the order as rice straw > vinly+lagging cover > lagging cover > vinyl > non-covering. From the above-ground growth by soil covering materials, vine length showed similar growth in all treatments except vinyl covering and stem diameter exhibited the thicker pattern in vinyl and lagging cover, and there was no significant difference among treatments in number of branch. Flowering period is recorded July 30 in all treatments and ripening period is October 16. Yield of seed production is showed the best in vinyl+lagging cover with $25g/m^2$. Root weight and root length for subterranean growth showed no significant differences among all treatments. Yield is produced the highest in vinyl+lagging cover with 433kg/10a and the next to lagging cover with 431kg/10a. In comparison with incomes, lagging cover earned to 9,882 thousand won/10a, showed the effect on income enlargement to 21%, compare to that of the non-covering.

In this study, we investigated the physical properties of powders made from agricultural byproducts, including rice straw, peanut husks, and garlic stems, to manufacture a new organic filler used for making paperboard. These materials were collected individually, and then we measured their chemical compositions. The byproducts were ground with a laboratory grinder and fractionated with 60-, 100-, and 200-mesh sieves to make many grades of organic fillers. After the grinding and fractionation, the yield, mean particle size, and particle size distribution of each grade were measured. Particle shapes were also investigated using a scanning electron microscope. The organic filler made from rice straw had the highest yield of the largest particle size group and higher contents of cellulose and hemicellulose than those made from peanut husks and garlic stems. The rice straw also showed more regular particle shapes and a lower aspect ratio than the other agricultural byproducts.
This study was conducted to produce effectively more leaves of Angelica acutiloba through year-round production system by using various mulching materials. Soil temperature by covering treatment was the highest in P.E.(Polyethylene Film) mulching and followed by rice straw mulching, especially showing highest temperature in Tr. PE(Transparent Polyethylene Film) from April through May. Water content of soil was higher in P.E. mulching than in non-mulching. Leaf and stem production of Angelica acutiloba through year-round production showed the highest in PE mulching also root production of Angelica acutiloba showed the highest in P.E. mulching. These results suggest that leaf and stem production of Angelica acutiloba can be maximized through P.E. mulching cultivation system.
The nutritional status of sulfur in rice plants grown on various field conditions different in soil fertility, fertilizers used and weather was investigated as follows. 1. The critical percentage of sulfur in rice shoot grown in a sulfur deficient field appears to be over 0.2 around 30 days after transplanting. 2. The mean sulfur contents at harvesting stage were 0.22% and 0.43% in the ear and straw, respectively and increased more in the straw by the application of ammonium sulfate. 3. The ratio of sulfur contents in the straw and ear (straw/ear) showed the increasing tendency from north to south only in the fertilized fields. But it was not as such in the percent translocation, the mean values of which were 26% and 29% in the fertilized and non-fertilized, respectively. 4. The sulfur uptake amounted to 6kg and 10kg per acre in the non-fertilized and fertilized, respectively. 5. The sulfur content was decreased in the order of leaf blade+leaf sheath, stem and ear, and was higher in the low productive field than that of high productive field.
To investigate the effects of Harvesting time and additives on the quality of peanut silage, the silage was mixed in combination with peanut leaf and stem, rice and barley straw, inoculant etc. Harvesting time at peanut growth stage was the best at 90 days after flowering with 30 branches,81 g of 100-seed weight, and 77% of shelling rate with low diseases in leaf and stem. By delay of harvest, diseases and lodging were increased. The yield of forage was the highest at 90 days after flowering as 52 t/ha, and seed yield was at 110 days as 3.72 t/ha. The yields between forage yield and seed yield ($r^2$=0.62$^{**}$) were correlated positively. The value of silage as a forage came over 90 days after flowering in combination with peanut leaf+stem+vice straw+inoculant treatment. The treatment was increased dry matter (DM) yield and neutral detergent fiber (NDF), the coarse protein (CP), and total digestible nutrient (TDN) content of silage in comparing with control (peanut leaf+stem). The pH at the organic matter contents of silage in combination of peanut leaf+stem+rice straw+lactic acid treatment was 5.04 to 5.10, the content of butyric and lactic acid were 3.12 to 4.64%, 2.07 to 7.34%, respectively.y.

Plant growth should be affected by mulching method. The study was done to examine the effect of different mulching methods on growth and yield of Atractylodes japonica Koidz. The experiment was done by six different mulching methods; no mulching, rice straw, transparent polyethylene (PE), black PE, two combined treatments of rice hull and transparent PE or black PE. Green shoot and related characters, growth and yield of early and late stages were measured on May 8, June 8 and October 26, respectively. Green shoot fresh weight was the highest in transparent PE mulching, while number of leaves, shoot and stem lengths were the greatest in rice straw mulching of the methods. In its early stage, rice straw mulching had the fewest number of leaves, roots, stems, the smallest width of leaves, and the least fresh weights of shoots and rhizomes. Combined mulching of black PE and rice hull showed the highest values in root-related characters; number of roots, fresh weights of rhizomes and roots. In its late stage, the treatment effects shown in the early stage disappeared owing to high temperature of mid-summer so that there was no significant difference between the mulching treatments. Yield per unit area and marketable yield were the highest in rice straw mulching, and combined mulching of black PE and rice hull.
