  • Transonic flow past a NASA SC(2)-0710 airfoil with deployments of a spoiler up to $6^{\circ}$ was studied numerically. We consider angles of attack from $-0.6^{\circ}$ to $0.6^{\circ}$ and free-stream Mach numbers from 0.81 to 0.86. Solutions of the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations were obtained with a finite-volume solver using several turbulence models. Both stationary and time-dependent deployments of the spoiler were examined. The study revealed the existence of narrow bands of the Mach number, angle of attack, and spoiler deflection angle, in which the flow was extremely sensitive to small perturbations. Simulations of 3D flow past a swept wing confirmed the flow sensitivity to small perturbations of boundary conditions.

  • Performance evaluation on thermal transport of a plate heat exchanger has been carried out. The $\varepsilon$-Ntu method is employed to evaluate the performance of a brazed type of plate heat exchanger. This problem is of particular interest in the design of a plate heat exchanger. The characteristics of heat transfer as well as pressure drop are studied in the wide range of Reynolds numbers in the cold side while that of hot side is fixed at 620. f-factor correlation in a plate heat exchanger is obtained from the pressure drop data. It is also found that the effectiveness of the plate heat exchanger is increased as the Ntu is increased.

  • Honeycomb seals are used widely in gas turbines due to their good sealing performance and rotor-dynamic stability. Three-Dimensional complex flows in a honeycomb seal were analyzed in the present study. Friction factors were computed to predict the performance of a honeycomb seal based on pressure drop results for various honeycomb cell geometry and Reynolds numbers. Computed results for friction factor are compared to the available experimental data. Unlike in the experiment, where 'Friction-Factor Jump' phenomena are reported for some cases, computed results show no jump phenomena. The friction factors, however, are in good agreement with the experiment in no-jump cases.

  • The objective of this study is to propose methods of controlling the wake behind a sphere for drag reduction using the suboptimal control theory and surrogate management framework, respectively. The Reynolds numbers considered is 300 at which the base flow is unsteady planar symmetric. Given the cost function defined as the square of the difference between the target pressure (potential-flow pressure) and real flow pressure on the sphere surface, the suboptimal control makes the flow steady axisymmetric and produces drag reduction. Based on the actuation profile from the suboptimal control, the optimal wavy actuation profile is obtained using the surrogate management framework and produces drag reduction.

  • Spiral tube heat exchangers can find numerous applications in many engineering field. Flow in spital tubes is interest to engineers due to occurrence of secondary flow which enhances the cross-sectional mixing and the heat transfer rate. In the present study, an incompressible viscous 3-D flow in spiral tubes with rectangular cross-section of various torsion rate and Reynolds number is studied by using a finite volume method. It is shown that the axial velocity profile is affected by the secondary flow motion. Because there is some difference from correlation proposed by Hur et al., a lot of analysis and arrangement of experimental results are needed. This study showed the results of variation of hydrodynamic entry length for torsion and Re numbers.

  • Mixed convection in a horizontal annulus is considered, and the effect of a forced flow on the natural convective flow is investigated. The inner cylinder is hotter than the outer cylinder, and the outer cylinder is rotating with constant angular velocity with its axis at the center of the annulus. The unsteady streamfunction-vorticity equation is solved with a finite difference method. For the fluid with Pr=0.7, there appear flows with two eddies, one eddy, or no eddy according the Rayleigh and Reynolds numbers. The rotation of the outer cylinder reduces the heat transfer rate at the wall of the annulus. The oscillatory multicellular flow of a low Prandtl number fluid with Pr=0.01 can be effectively suppressed by the forced flow.

  • The flow and heat transfer characteristics at the surface of two-dimensional protruding heated blocks using confined impingement multiple slot jets were computationally investigated Numerical predictions were made for round-edged nozzles at several nozzle-to-target plate spacings and jet-to-jet distances, with turbulent jet Reynolds numbers ranging from 2000 to 7800. The commercial finite-volume code FLUENT was used to solve the heat transfer characteristics and flow fields using a RNG $\textsc{k}-\varepsilon$ model. The computed heat transfer characteristics at the surface of heated blocks were in good qualitative agreement with previous experimental data The results of heat transfer characteristics on the surface of protruding heated blocks are important considerations in electronics Packaging design.

  • A large eddy simulation(LES) is performed for turbulent flow in a combustion device. The combustion device is simplified as a cylinder with sudden expansion. To promote turbulent mixing and to accommodate flame stability, a flame holder is attached inside the combustion chamber. Emphasis is placed on the flow details with different geometries of the flame holder. The subgrid scale models are applied and validated. The simulation code is constructed by using a general coordinate system based on the physical contravariant velocity components. The calculated Reynolds numbers are 5000 and 50000 based on the bulk velocity and the diameter of inlet pipe. The predicted turbulent statistics are evaluated by comparing with the LDV measurement data. The agreement of LES with the experimental data is shown to be satisfactory.

  • This study represents numerical analysis in top opening rectangular with a heating source. The governing equations were solved by a finite volume method, a SIMPLE algorithm was adopted to solve a pressure term. The top boundary with free surface was calculated by energy balance condition. As the results of simulations, the magnitudes of the velocity vectors and isotherms were very small at the lower space of a heating source. The mean Nusselt numbers are increased proportionally to the Grashof number, the heat transfer at Y/H=0.25 was greater than other positions.

  • Thermocapillary convection in an open cylindrical annulus heated from the inside wall is investigated by two-dimensional numerical simulations. The deformable free surface is obtained as a solution of the coupled transport equations at fixed Prandtl and aspect ratio. Only steady convection can be realized in this axisymmetric computations with either non-deformable or deformable surfaces. Dynamic free-surface deformations do not induce transitions to oscillatory convection even at large Reynolds numbers. Free surfaces are convex near the cold wall due to the stagnation point, and concave near the hot wall. Free surface deformation increases with increasing Ca at a fixed Re. Two peaks appear at the free surface with low Re, while additional ripples, four peaks, occur at larger Re. Thermocapillary convection in the open annulus interior is insensitive to variations in Ca.
