The present study is conducted to investigate the local heat/mass transfer characteristics for flow through perforated plates. A naphthalene sublimation method is employed to determine the local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the effusion plate. Two parallel perforated plates are arranged for the two different ways: staggered and shifted in one direction. The experiments are conducted for hole pitch-to-diameter ratios of 6.0, for gap distance between the perforated plates of 0.33 to 10 hole diameters, and for Reynolds numbers of 5,000 to 12,000. The result shows that the high transfer region is formed at stagnation region and at the mid-line of the adjacent impinging jets due to secondary vortices and flow acceleration to the effusion hole. For flows through the perforated plates, the mass transfer rates on the surface of the effusion plate are about six to ten times higher than for effusion cooling alone (single perforated plate). More uniform and higher heat/mass transfer characteristic is obtained in overall region with small gap between two perforated plates.

Two perforated plates are used to investigate local heat/mass transfer characteristics in an impingement/effusion cooling system. A naphthalene sublimation method is conducted to determine the local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the upward facing surface of the effusion plate. Two plates are placed in parallel position with gap distances of 1, 2, 4 and 6 times of effusion hole diameter. The effects of hole arrangements of the plates are studied fur staggered, square, and hexagonal arrays. The experiments are conducted at Reynolds number of 10,000 based on the effusion hole diameter. The results show that the smaller hole size in the staggered array has the higher transfer coefficients on the stagnation region due to the formation of higher momentum flows through the impingement holes. In the square array, heat/mass transfer on the target plate is more uniform as the number of impingement holes increases. High and uniform heat/mass transfer coefficients are obtained for the hexagonal array.

A numerical study on the quantitative analogy between the fully developed turbulent flow in a straight square duct rotating about an axis perpendicular to that of the duct and that in a stationary curved duct of square cross-section is carried out. In order to clarify the similarity of the two flows, dimensionless parameters K(sub)TR=Re(sup)1/4/√Ro and Rossby number, Ro, in a rotating straight duct flow were used as a set corresponding to K(sub)TC=Re(sup)1/4/√λ and curvature ratio, λ, in a stationary curved duct flow so that they have the same dynamical meaning as those of the fully developed laminar flows. For the large values of Ro or λ, it is shown that the flow field satisfies the asymptotic invariance property, that is, there are strong quantitative similarities between the two flows such as flow patterns and friction factors for the same values of K(sub)TR and K(sub)TC.

Without any validation of the incompressible assumption, most of previous studies on cavitation flow and its noise have utilized numerical methods based on the incompressible Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations because of advantage of its efficiency. In this study, to investigate the effects of the flow compressibility on the Tip Vortex Cavitation (TVC) flow and noise, both the incompressible and compressible simulations are performed to simulate the TVC flow, and the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings (FW-H) integral equation is utilized to predict the TVC noise. The DARPA Suboff submarine body with an underwater propeller of a skew angle of 17 degree is targeted to account for the effects of upstream disturbance. The computation domain is set to be same as the test-section of the large cavitation tunnel in Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering to compare the prediction results with the measured ones. To predict the TVC accurately, the Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (DDES) technique is used in combination with the adaptive grid techniques. The acoustic spectrum obtained using the compressible flow solver shows closer agreement with the measured one.

The present study is conducted to investigate the effect of rib arrangements on an impingement/effusion cooling system with initial crossflow. To simulate the impingement/effusion cooling system, two perforated plates are placed in parallel and staggered arrangements with a gap distance of 2 times of tile hole diameter. Initial crossflow passes between the injection and effusion plates, and the square ribs (3mm) are installed on the effusion plate. Both the injection and effusion hole diameters are 10mmand Reynolds number based on the hole diameter and hole-to-hole pitch are fixed to 10,000 and 6 times of the hole diameter, respectively. To investigate the effects of rib arrangements, various rib arrangements, such as 90$^{\circ}$transverse and 45$^{\circ}$angled rib arrangements, are used. Also, the effects of flow rate ratio of crossflow to impinging jets are investigated. With the initial crossflow, locally low transfer regions are formed because the wall jets are swept away, and level of heat transfer rate get decreased with increasing flow rate of crossflow. When the ribs are installed on the effusion plate, the local distributions of heat/mass transfer coefficients around the effusion holes are changed. The local heat/mass transfer around the stagnation regions and the effusion holes are affected by the rib positions, angle of attack and rib spacing. For low blowing ratio, the ribs have adverse effects on heat/mass transfer, but for higher blowing ratios, higher and more uniform heat transfer coefficient distributions are obtained than the case without ribs because the ribs prevent the wall jets from being swept away by the crossflow and increase local turbulence of the flow near the surface. Average heat transfer coefficients with rib turbulators are approximately 10% higher than that without ribs, and the higher values are obtained with small pitch of ribs. However, the attack angle of the rib has little influence on the average heat/mass transfer.
A multi-objective optimization of a regenerative fan for enhancing the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic performance was carried out using an integrated fan design system, namely, Total FAN-Regen$^{(R)}$. The Total FAN-Regen$^{(R)}$ was developed for non-specialists to carry out a series of design process, viz., computational preliminary design, three-dimensional aerodynamic and aeroacoustic analyses, and design optimization, for a regenerative fan. An aerodynamic analysis of the regenerative fan was conducted by solving three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations using the shear stress transport turbulence model. And, an aeroacoustic analysis of the regenerative fan was implemented in a finite/infinite element method by solving the variational formulation of Lighthill's analogy based on the results of the unsteady flow analysis. An optimum shape obtained by Total FAN-Regen$^{(R)}$ shows the enhanced efficiency and decreased sound pressure level as much as 1.5 % and 20.0 dB, respectively, compared to those of the reference design. The performance test was carried out for an optimized regenerative fan to validate the performance of the numerically predicted optimal design.

The present study has been conducted to investigate convective heat/mass transfer in the cooling passage with bleed holes. The rotating square channel has 40.0 mm hydraulic diameter and the bleed holes on the leading surface of the channel. The hole diameter of bleed hole is 4.5mm and its spacing is ( p/d:4.9) about five times of hole diameter. Exit mass flow rate through bleed holes is $10\%$ of the main mass flow rate and relation number is changed form 0.0 to 0.4. A naphthalene sublimation technique is employed to determine the detailed local heat transfer coefficients using the heat and mass transfer analogy The cooling performance is influenced by exit mass flow rate through bleed holes and Coriolis force of rotating channel for fixed Reynolds number. The heat transfer on the leading surface is decreased due to Coriolis force. However the total heat transfer is enhanced around holes on the leading surface because of trapping flow by bleeding.

The flow noise generated by hull appendages is directly related to the performance of the sonar in terms of self-noise and induces a secondary noise source through interaction with the propeller and rudder. Thus, the noise in the near field should be analyzed accurately. However, the acoustic analogy method is an indirect method that is not used to simulate the propagation of an acoustic signal directly; therefore, diffraction, reflection, and scattering characteristics cannot be considered, and near-field analysis is limited. In this study, the propagation process of flow noise in water was directly simulated by using the lattice Boltzmann method. The lattice Boltzmann method could be used to analyze flow noise by simulating the collision and streaming processes of molecules, and it is suitable for noise analysis because of its compressibility, low dissipation rate, and low dispersion rate characteristics. The flow noise source was derived using Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations for the hull appendages, and the propagation process of the flow noise was directly simulated using the lattice Boltzmann method by applying the developed flow-acoustic boundary conditions. The derived results were compared with Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings results and hydrodynamic pressure results based on the receiver location to verify the usefulness of the lattice Boltzmann method within the near-field range in comparison with other techniques.
Liquid lead-bismuth cooled fast reactor is one of the most promising reactor types among the fourth-generation nuclear energy systems. The flow and heat transfer characteristics of lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) are completely different from ordinary fluids due to its special thermal properties, causing that the traditional Reynolds analogy is no longer recommended and appropriate. More accurate turbulence flow and heat transfer model for the liquid metal lead-bismuth should be developed and applied in CFD simulation. In this paper, a specific CFD solver for simulating the flow and heat transfer of liquid lead-bismuth based on the k - 𝜀 - k𝜃 - 𝜀𝜃 model was developed based on the open source platform OpenFOAM. Then the advantage of proposed model was demonstrated and validated against a set of experimental data. Finally, the simulation of LBE turbulent flow and heat transfer in a 7-pin wire-wrapped rod bundle with the k - 𝜀 - k𝜃 - 𝜀𝜃 model was carried out. The influence of wire on the flow and heat transfer characteristics and the three-dimensional distribution of key thermal hydraulic parameters such as temperature, cross-flow velocity and Nusselt number were studied and presented. Compared with the traditional SED model with a constant Prt = 1.5 or 2.0, the k - 𝜀 - k𝜃 - 𝜀𝜃 model is more accurate on predicting the turbulence flow and heat transfer of liquid lead-bismuth. The average relative error of the k - 𝜀 - k𝜃 - 𝜀𝜃 model is reduced by 11.1% at most under the simulation conditions in this paper. This work is meaningful for the thermal hydraulic analysis and structure design of fuel assembly in the liquid lead-bismuth cooled fast reactor.
