Feedwater heaters of many nuclear power plants have recently experienced severe wall thinning damange, which will increase as operating time progresses. Several nuclear power plants in Korea have experienced wall thinning damage in the area around the impingement baffle-installed downstream of the high pressure turbine extraction stream line- inside number 5A and 5B feedwater heaters. At that point, the extracted steam from the high pressure turbine is two phase fluid at high temperature, high pressure, and high speed. Since it flows in reverse direction after impinging the impingement baffle, the shell wall of the number 5 high pressure feedwater heater may be affected by flow-accelerated corrosion. This paper describes operation of experience and numerical analysis composed similar condition with real high pressure feedwater heater. This study applied squared, curved and new type impingement baffle plates to feedwater heater same as previous study. In addition, it shows difference of pressure distribution and value between single phase and two phase based on experience and numerical analysis.
This paper proposes a new bidirectional DC-DC converter with high efficiency. The proposed converter is composed of a flyback and a tapped-inductor boost converter to satisfy extreme operating conditions with low cost. The outputs are connected in series to achieve a high-voltage step-up. In the reverse direction, the proposed converter has an extreme step-down voltage. In this study, the proposed converter was employed with a 100 W hardware prototype. To design the controller, a small-signal transfer function of the proposed converter is derived. For PV power conditioning systems, a maximum power point tracking method is applied with perturb and observe method. To verify the operation of the bidirectional power flow, the current controller is applied. All of the controllers are employed with a digital signal processor.
This article aims to develop an algorithm that detects fire pump defects by analyzing the current signals of an induction motor, which are triggered by changes in the flow rate and pressure of multistage volute pumps that are used for fire services. The operational status of the pumps was categorized into three: first, normal operation; second, a defect that is caused by a change in the current value; and third, a defect occasioned by a change in current, pressure, and flow rate. When a fire pump was in normal operation, the motor's operating current was measured between 5.06 A and 6.9 A, the flow rate was estimated at 0-0.27 m3/min, and the pressure ranged from 0 to 0.47 MPa. In the event that a defect was caused by an abnormal current value in the motor, it was attributed to the pump's adherence. Furthermore, if there was no source of water, the defect was considered to have been induced by phase-loss operation, no-load operation, or run-stop operation, with the current value of each scenario being measured at > 52.8 A, < 4.13 A, > 45.15 A, and < 3.8 A, respectively, placing its overall range between 0 and 50 A. The sources of defects were detected based on an analysis of the flow rate, pressure, and current, which represent the following causes: air inflow into the casing, inadequate suction of water, and reverse-phase operation, respectively. Each cause entailed the following values: when air seeped into the casing, the pressure was measured at 0.24 MPa irrespective of changes in the flow rate; when there was inadequate suction of water, the pressure was recorded between 0 and 0.05 MPa despite changes in the flow rate; and when the power line's reverse-phase loss was the cause of the defect, the pressure was measured at 0.33 MPa for a flow rate of 0 L/min, and a higher flow rate decreased the pressure to nearly 0 MPa. The results of this study will enable engineers to develop a pump defect detection algorithm that is based on an analysis of current, and this algorithm will facilitate the execution of a program that will control a fire pump defect detection system.
The goal of this research is to verify a performance test system for a low speed, high torque, and harsh reducer at low cost. The reducer rotates a cooling fan with a diameter of 10 meters, in a high temperature (50℃) cooling tower in a geothermal power plant. It requires about 500 kgf·m torque and 47.75 kW power to rotate the fan at a maximum power condition. An expensive dynamometer is commonly used for performance test of a motor or a reducer. In this paper, a low cost system is developed using a hydraulic pump as a load unit to generate torque instead of a dynamometer. We accurately calculated the required power, the flow meter, and the pressure of the pump, and selected to design and optimize the system at minimal cost. The system also applied another reverse reducer and a gearbox to increase the rotational speed and to reduce the torque from the low speed and high torque target reducer. This allows low-cost systems to be built using inexpensive components. The developed system was able to successfully measure the high torque and the low rotational speed of the target reducer at high temperature.

The pump-turbine impeller is the key component of pumped storage power plant. Current design methods of pump-turbine impeller are private and protected from public viewing. Generally, the design proceeds in two steps: the initial hydraulic design and optimization design to achieve a balanced performance between pump mode and turbine mode. In this study, the 3D inverse design method is used for the initial hydraulic impeller design. However, due to the special demand of high performance in both pump and reverse mode, the design method is insufficient. This study is carried out by modifying the geometrical parameters of the blade which have great influence and need special consideration in obtaining the high performance on the both modes, such as blade shape type at low pressure side (inlet of pump mode, outlet of turbine mode) and the blade lean at blade high pressure side (outlet of pump mode, inlet of turbine mode). The influence of the geometrical parameters on the performance characteristic is evaluated by CFD analysis which presents the efficiency and internal flow results. After these investigations of the geometrical parameters, the criteria of designing pump-turbine impeller blade low and high sides shape is achieved.
The performance of a scroll expander is the most important factor for the efficiency of small scale Organic Rankine cycle waste heat power generation systems. In this research, a scroll compressor was purchased and operated in reverse to function as a scroll expander. With air as a working fluid, a series of performance test were conducted on this expander by varying the inlet and outlet pressure. Secondly, We have tested through 2000 to 3500 rpm rotational speed to find the maximum power and efficiency of the expander. And last, It was observed in the initial experiments that the design of the expander's orbiting scroll wrap partially blocked the fluid intake which may have caused unnecessary flow resistance. To verify this theory, a small part of the scroll wrap was removed and the performance test was redone. It was observed that the lower back pressure assure the higher efficiency and power of expander and the rotational speed that shows maximum adiabetic efficiency of scroll expander is 69% at 2500 rpm. And by modified wrap of the scroll, we could get volume flow rate for 13% to 19% and power for 5% to 18% increased. But the maximum efficiency of the modified scroll was decreased 8%.

This paper describes the comparisons between the numerical results using the FLUENT code and the down scale experimental data on effect of geometry of the impingement baffle plate on the shell wall thinning. Additionally, a new type impingement baffle plate was installed above the impingement baffle plate in the feedwater heater and then the numerical and experimental study were performed in the same progress.
A butterfly valve is a valve that adjusts flow rate by rotating a disc for about 90° with respect to the axis that is perpendicular to the flow path from the center of its body. This valve can be manufactured for low-temperature, high-temperature and high-pressure conditions because there are few restrictions on the used materials. However, the development of valves that can be used in a 600℃ environment is subject to many constraints. In this study, the butterfly valve's stability was evaluated by a fluid-structured interaction analysis, thermal-structure interaction analysis, and seismic analysis for the development of valves that can be used in high-temperature environments. When the reverse-pressure was applied to the valve in the structural analysis, the stress was low in the body and seat compared to the normal pressure. Compared with the allowable strength of the material for the parts of the valve system, the minimum safety factor was approximately 1.4, so the valve was stable. As a result of applying the design pressures of 0.5 MPa and 600℃ under the load conditions in the thermal-structural analysis, the safety factor in the valve body was about 3.4 when the normal pressure was applied and about 2.7 when the reverse pressure was applied. The stability of the fluid-structure interaction analysis was determined to be stable compared to the 600℃ yield strength of the material, and about 2.2 for the 40° open-angle disc for the valve body. In seismic analysis, the maximum value of the valve's stress value was about 9% to 11% when the seismic load was applied compared to the general structural analysis. Based on the results of this study, the structural stability and design feasibility of high-temperature valves that can be used in cogeneration plants and other power plants are presented.
This paper proposes Power System Health Index(PSHI) newly. The paper describes several kind of power system health indices based on two main categories, which are adequacy and security. In adequacy, four kinds of health indices of Frequency, Voltage, Reserve(Operating Reserve Power and Frequency Regulation Reserve Power) and Overload of lines and transformers are proposed. In security, four kinds of health indices of Voltage(154kV, 345kV and 765kV), Overload of lines and transformers, Power flow constraint among areas and SPS are proposed. All indices are mapped with three domains, which are indicated as Health, Margin and Risk, defined with expert interview. While domains of health, margin and risk is defined similar with the conventional well being analysis of power system. The criterion of the domains is proposed using an interview with expert operators and practical reliability codes in Korea. The several kinds of health index functions, which are linear ratio, piecewise linear ration and reverse ratio function etc. are developed in this paper. It will be expected that the developed health indices can help operators to control power system more successfully and also prevent power system from accident as like as black out in future because operator can make a decision immediately based on more easily visual information of system conditions from too much indices acquisition of complex power system.
