RECENT DEVELOPMENTS OF MEMBRANE TECHNOLOGY IN JAPAN

  • Since the discovery of the Loeb-Sourirajan reverse osmosis membrane, thirty years have passed and many membrane technologies and new membranes for applications have been developed in the world. In the early stage of these developments Japan has not contributed much, but from the middle of 70ties Japan has started its own R&D projects starting from the desalination technology, and now various private industries and government ministries are actively engaging in R & D of membrane technologies in Japan. In Table 1 the chronological developments of important events of developments and projects relating membrane technologies inside and outside of Japan are introduced and their details will be explained. The first membrane technology applied in the Japanese industry was a electrodialysis(ED) process using ion-exchange membranes. These membranes were first developed in early 50ties and the Japanese government decided to use this method for concentration of sea-water to produce salt, which was then produced by solar evaporation. This development program started from 1960 by the Japan Monopoly Corp.(at that time). To apply ED process for sea-water concentration it was necessary to develop ion-exchange membranes having very low electric resistance to avoid energy loss due to Joule heat, and those having selectivity to permeate single valent ions only to avoid scale formation in the ED stacks. Three Japanese companies, Asahi Glass, Asahi Chemical and Tokuyama Soda, have succeeded to develop such membranes, and until 1971 all of the seven salt manufacturing companies had adopted ED for production of food salt.

초순수 제조 공정에서 역삼투 막의 저농도 유기물 제거 (Removal of low concentration organic matter by reverse osmosis membranes in ultrapure water production process)

  • Ultrapure water (UPW) is water containing nothing but water molecule ($H_2O$). The use of UPW is increasing in many industries such as the thermal and nuclear power plants, petrochemical plants, and semiconductor manufacturers. In order to produce UPW, several unit processes such as ion exchange, reverse osmosis (RO), ultraviolet (UV) oxidation should be efficiently arranged. In particular, RO process should remove not only ions but also low molecular weight (LMW) organic matters in UPW production system. But, the LMW organic matter removal data of RO membranes provided by manufacturers does not seem to be reasonable because they tested the removal in high concentration conditions like 1,000 ppm of isopropyl alcohol (IPA, MW=60.1). In this study, bench-scale experiments were carried out using 4-inches RO modules. IPA was used as a model LMW organic matter with low concentration conditions less than 1 ppm as total organic carbon (TOC). As a result, the IPA removal data by manufacturers turned out to be trustable because the effect of feed concentration on the IPA removal was negligble while the IPA removal efficiency became higher at higher permeate flux.

  • 음이온 교환막은 전기투석뿐만 아니라 역전기투석에 의한 전기생산과 축전 탈이온에 의한 정수 분야에 이용될 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 폴리비닐알콜 수용액 상에서 (vinylbenzyl)trimethylammonium chloride와 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate를 중합한 후 글루타르산과의 에스테르화 반응, 그리고 글루타르알데히드와 가교반응을 통해서 음이온 교환막을 제조하였다. 실험 변수에 따라 음이온 교환막을 제조하고 이온교환막의 전기화학적 물성을 조사하였다. 중합반응에서 음이온 교환성 단량체 비율에 따라 이온교환량과 저항 값이 변하였으며, 에스테르화 반응에서는 글루타르산의 함량의 증가에 따라 함수율과 전도도가 감소하였다. 형성된 필름과 알데히드의 가교반응 시간 변화는 함수율, 전기저항, 이동수 값들에 영향을 미쳤다. 끝으로 제조된 이온 교환막의 chronopotentiometry와 한계전류밀도도 측정하였다.

수용액으로부터 질산성질소 제거를 위한 기술 (Separation Technologies for the Removal of Nitrate-Nitrogen from Aqueous Solution)

  • 높은 농도의 질산염을 포함하는 물은 인간의 건강을 위협하고 부영양화의 원인이 되기 때문에 제한 농도 이하로 처리되어야 한다. 그러나 질산염은 수용액에서의 높은 용해도로 인해 응집, 여과 및 침전과 같은 일반적인 처리공정으로는 제거가 거의 불가능하다. 따라서 흡착, 이온교환, 역삼투, 탈질과 전기투석과 같은 다른 기술이 질산염의 효과적인 제거를 위해 요구된다. 이들 각 기술은 비용, 수질 개선 정도, 잔류물 처리와 전처리 요구와 같은 인자의 비중에 따라 장점과 단점과 가능성을 가지고 있다. 흡착은 가격 효율성, 운전의 용이성과 설계의 간편성으로 가장 보편적으로 사용되는 공정이다. 흡착제의 표면개질은 질산이온 흡착능력을 개선하였다. 역전 전기투석과 역삼투의 질산-선택 멤브레인 공정은 수용액 중의 질산이온 제거에 오랜 동안 많은 지역에서 효과적임이 증명되었다. 두 기술은 높은 농도의 폐기물을 생성하고 이것의 신중한 처분이 필요하다.

  • 할로겐화 벤질의 할로겐 교환반응을 무수 아세톤에서 연구하였으며 반응속도상수 계산에는 새로 유도한 적분식을 사용하였다. 아세톤 용매 속에서의 할로겐 이온들의 친핵반응성은 90% 에탄올 용매속에서의 것과 정반대 순서이며 이것은 HSAB 원리와 할로겐 이온의 solvation으로 설명할 수 있었다. 아세톤 용매 속에서의 반응속도의 증가는 ${\Delta}H^\neq$의 감소보다는 ${\Delta}S^\neq$의 증가에 기인되며 또 전이상태의 solvation 현상도 그 원이이 될 수 있음을 논의하였다.

Comparison of CDI and MCDI applied with sulfonated and aminated polysulfone polymers

  • In this study, polysufone (PSf) was used as a base polymer to synthesize sulfonated polysulfone (SPSf) and aminated polysulfone (APSf) as cation and anion exchange polymers, respectively. Then the ion exchange polymers were coated onto the surface of commercial carbon electrodes. To compare the capacitive deionization (CDI) and membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) processes, the pristine carbon electrodes and ionic polymer coated electrodes were tested under various operating conditions such as feed flow rate, adsorption time at fixed desorption time, and feed concentration, etc., in terms of effluent concentration and salt removal efficiency. The MCDI was confirmed to be superior to the CDI process. The performance of MCDI was 2-3 times higher than that of CDI. In particular, the reverse desorption potential was a lot better than zero potential. Typically, the salt removal efficiency 100% for 100 mg/L NaCl was obtained for MCDI at feed flow rate of 15 ml/min and adsorption/desorption time of 3 min/1 min and applied voltages 1.0 V for adsorption and -0.3 V for desorption process, and for 500 mg/L, the salt removal efficiency 91% was observed.

Purification and Characterization of Antibacterial Peptides, Spodopsin Ia and Ib Induced in the Larval Haemolymph of the Common Cutworm, Spodoptera Iitura

  • Antibacterial activity was induced in the haemolymph of the common cutworm, Spodoptera litura by the artificial injection of E, coli Ek132. Antibacterial peptides were purified from the immunized haemolymph by heat treatment, ion-exchange chromatography, gel filtration chromatography, and reverse phase FPLC, and their physicochemical characteristics were investigated. These purified antibacterial peptides designated as spodopsin la and Ib were named after Spodoptera litura. Spodopsin la and Ib had the apparent molecular masses of 3, 823 Da and 3, 886 Da, respectively, and about 20% of the sequences had basic amino acids, such as lysine and arginine but no cysteine. Also, spodopsin l was confirmed to be a new member of cecropin family having a similar amino acid sequence to cecropin of lepidopteran insects, such as Bombyx mori and Hyalophora cecropia. The purified spodopsin was active against gram-positive as well as gram-negative bacteria.

  • 중소형 폐기물소각설비의 저압 저질의 포화증기를 이용한 폐열발전용 용수처리에 관한 연구를 수행 하였다. 기존 소각설비에 적용된 강산성 이온교환수지형 연수기에 역삼투압 멤브레인 처리와 강염기성 이온교환수지형 용수처리를 연결하여 보일러 용수를 처리한 결과, KS B6209의 30 $kg/cm_2$ 증기 압력의 보일러 용수기준에는 적합하였고, 증기의 비체적으로 증기 농도로 환산하면. 역삼투압법처리에 의한 방법보다는 강염기성이온교환수지형 용수처리를 연계 처리한 결과가 중소형폐기물소각설비의 저압증기터빈발전에 보다 적합한 것으로 나타났다.

  • In the last 10 years, membrane science and technology in Korea have grown fast in terms of basic research and process applications. Even the first large commercial membrane plant in Korea was an ion-exchange membrane process built in 1975 for the production of table salt with an annual capacity of 150,000 tons of salt, membrane processes could not draw general interests from industry not until 1987 when a reverse osmosis plant for the production of process water with a capacity of 10,000 m$^3$/day was built by Kugdong Petroleum Co. Today, the production of water by RO over the capacity of 140,000 m$^3$/day is in operation or under construction in Korea. Consumption of ultra pure water increases sharply in recent years mainly due to the rapid expansion of semiconductor industry and the introduction of ultra high pressure boilers for power plants.

Characteristics of the Protease Inhibitor Purified from Chum Salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) Eggs

  • Protease inhibitor of 72.6 kDa was successively purified from chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) eggs by ion exchange, gel permeation, and affinity chromatographies. Protease inhibitor was purified with yield and purification fold of 1.50% and 58.11, respectively. SDS-PAGE results showed purified protease inhibitor consisted of two protein subunits of 54.0 and 18.6 kDa. Chum salmon inhibitor exhibited stability between 20 and $40^{\circ}C$ in weak acid environment (PH 6), and inhibited papain and cathepsin, members of cysteine protease, but not chymotrypsin. The protein inhibited cathepsin more effectively than did egg white protease inhibitor, whereas the reverse was true for papain. These results indicate chum salmon egg inhibitor is heterodimer, thus the inhibitor was classified as cysteine protease inhibitor.
