In extension to our previous study, we develop metadata that specify elements' structural orders, to increase the efficiency level of XML document's retrieval process. Then, we proposed a structure-based indexing model. We expect the model to generate a more efficient retrieval process of horizontally and vertically related elements. To evaluate the model's performance level, we developed an experimental prototype and conducted an experiment on an XML corpus. On average, descendant, ancestor and sibling retrievals were approximately twelve percent faster than the ETID model. And retrievals specifying structural orders of particular element types were approximately twenty-five percent faster than the ETID model. In conclusion, metadata, such as Etype, Asso and Lsso, may make a meaningful contribution to retrieval processes that specify elements' order.
This paper presents a novel method for image classification based on a hybrid genetic algorithm (GA) and support vector machine (SVM) approach which can significantly improve the classification performance for content-based image retrieval (CBIR). Though SVM has been widely applied to CBIR, it has some problems such as the kernel parameters setting and feature subset selection of SVM which impact the classification accuracy in the learning process. This study aims at simultaneously optimizing the parameters of SVM and feature subset without degrading the classification accuracy of SVM using GA for CBIR. Using the hybrid GA and SVM model, we can classify more images in the database effectively. Experiments were carried out on a large-size database of images and experiment results show that the classification accuracy of conventional SVM may be improved significantly by using the proposed model. We also found that the proposed model outperformed all the other models such as neural network and typical SVM models.
In this paper, we propose a new language model, namely, a dependency structure language model, for information retrieval to compensate for the weaknesses of unigram and bigram language models. The dependency structure language model is based on the first-order dependency model and the dependency parse tree generated by a linguistic parser. So, long-distance dependencies can be naturally captured by the dependency structure language model. We carried out extensive experiments to verify the proposed model, where the dependency structure model gives a better performance than recently proposed language models and the Okapi BM25 method, and the dependency structure is more effective than unigram and bigram in language modeling for information retrieval.
In this paper, we propose a new spatio-temporal representation scheme which can model moving objets trajectories effectively in video data and a new signature-based access method for moving objects trajectories which can support efficient retrieval on user query based on moving objects trajectories. The proposed spatio-temporal representation scheme supports content-based retrieval based on moving objects trajectories and concept-based retrieval based on concepts(semantics) which are acquired through the location information of moving objects trajectories. Also, compared with the sequential search, our signature-based access method can improve retrieval performance by reducing a large number of disk accesses because it access disk using only retrieved candidate signatures after it first scans all signatures and performs filtering before accessing the data file. Finally, we show the experimental results that proposed scheme is superior to the Li and Shan's scheme in terns of both retrieval effectiveness and efficiency.
Music-similarity computation is crucial in developing music information retrieval systems for browsing and classification. This paper overviews the recently-proposed centroid-model based music retrieval method and applies the distributional similarity measures to the model for retrieval-performance evaluation. Probabilistic distance measures (also called divergence) compute the distance between two probability distributions in a certain sense. In this paper, we consider the alpha divergence in computing distance between two centroid models for music retrieval. The alpha divergence includes the widely-used Kullback-Leibler divergence and Bhattacharyya distance depending on the values of alpha. Experiments were conducted on both genre and singer datasets. We compare the music-retrieval performance of the distributional similarity with that of the vector distances. The experimental results show that the alpha divergence improves the performance of the centroid-model based music retrieval.

It is a challenging problem to search the intended images from a large number of candidates. Content based image retrieval (CBIR) is the most promising way to tackle this problem, where the most important topic is to measure the similarity of images so as to cover the variance of shape, color, pose, illumination etc. While previous works made significant progresses, their adaption ability to dataset is not fully explored. In this paper, we propose a similarity learning method on the basis of probabilistic generative model, i.e., probabilistic latent semantic analysis (PLSA). It first derives Fisher kernel, a function over the parameters and variables, based on PLSA. Then, the parameters are determined through simultaneously maximizing the log likelihood function of PLSA and the retrieval performance over the training dataset. The main advantages of this work are twofold: (1) deriving similarity measure based on PLSA which fully exploits the data distribution and Bayes inference; (2) learning model parameters by maximizing the fitting of model to data and the retrieval performance simultaneously. The proposed method (PLSA-FK) is empirically evaluated over three datasets, and the results exhibit promising performance.
In this paper, we introduce a phone vector discrete HMM(PVDHMM) that decodes a phone sequence string, and demonstrates the applicability to spoken document retrieval. The PVDHMM treats a phone recognizer or large vocabulary continuous speech recognizer (LVCSR) as a vector quantizer whose codebook size is equal to the size of its phone set. We apply the PVDHMM to decode the phone sequence strings and compare the outputs with those of a continuous speech recognizer(CSR). Also we carry out spoken document retrieval experiment through PVDHMM word spotter on the phone sequence strings which are generated by phone recognizer or LVCSR and compare its results with those of retrieval through the phone-based vector space model.

One of the roles of the Semantic Web services is to execute dynamic intra-organizational services including the integration and interoperation of business processes. Since different organizations design their processes differently, the retrieval of similar semantic business processes is necessary in order to support inter-organizational collaborations. Most approaches for finding services that have certain features and support certain business processes have relied on some type of logical reasoning and exact matching. This paper presents our approach of using imprecise matching fur expanding results from an exact matching engine to query the OWL MIT Process Handbook. In order to use the MIT Process Handbook for process retrieval experiments, we had to export it into an OWL-based format. We model the Process Handbook meta-model in OWL and export the processes in the Handbook as instances of the meta-model. Next, we need to find a sizable number of queries and their corresponding correct answers in the Process Handbook. We devise diverse similarity algorithms based on values of process attributes and structures of business processes. We perform retrieval experiments to compare the performance of the devised similarity algorithms.
In this paper, we propose a novo] content-based image retrieval system using both Hidden Markov Model(HMM) and an improved chain code. The Gaussian Mixture Model(GMM) is applied to statistically model a color information of the image, and Deterministic Annealing EM(DAEM) algorithm is employed to estimate the parameters of GMM. This result is used to segment the given image. We use an improved chain code, which is invariant to rotation, translation and scale, to extract the feature vectors of the shape for each image in the database. These are stored together in the database with each HMM whose parameters (A, B, $\pi$) are estimated by Baum-Welch algorithm. With respect to feature vector obtained in the same way from the query image, a occurring probability of each image is computed by using the forward algorithm of HMM. We use these probabilities for the image retrieval and present the highest similarity images based on these probabilities.
This paper deals with the problem of shape-based retrieval in time-series databases. The shape-based retrieval is defined as the operation that searches for the (sub)sequences whose shapes are similar to that of a given query sequence regardless of their actual element values. In this paper, we propose an effective and efficient approach for shape-based retrieval of subsequences. We first introduce a new similarity model for shape-based retrieval that supports various combinations of transformations such as shifting, scaling, moving average, and time warping. For efficient processing of the shape-based retrieval based on the similarity model, we also propose the indexing and query processing methods. To verify the superiority of our approach, we perform extensive experiments with the real-world S&P 500 stock data. The results reveal that our approach successfully finds all the subsequences that have the shapes similar to that of the query sequence, and also achieves significant speedup up to around 66 times compared with the sequential scan method.
