  • In this paper, we have proposed a new computer retina model reflecting the mechanism of transient amacrine cell on the basis of a conventional computer retina model to understand mechanism of visual information processing. The conventional computer retina model contained most of mechanism for other retina models and it was verified with the physiological data. However, we found that a conventional computer retina model doesn't have the mechanism of amacrine cell that was likely to respond to moving stimulus. In proposed model, therefore, a conventional computer model that considered from photoreceptors to bipolar cells and a new computer model that considered for transient amacrine cell and ganglion cell was combined. As we compared the physiological data with the results of computer simulation of transient amacrine cell about fixed stimulus and moving stimulus, we confirmed that the proposed new computer retina model was normally operated.

  • Retina transforms the external light into electrical signal that stimulates visual cortex of the brain. Electrical modeling of the retina is useful to understand its structure and action that is a prerequisite to implement the retina as a hardware device. This paper introduces a 2-D electrical network model of vertebrate's retina considering signal pathway of retinal cells and synapses. We implemented a simulator of the retina based on the electrical network model to analyze its operation under various circumstances. Compared to the prior studies, It might contribute designing of artificial retina device in terms of that this study specifically observed input and output reactions of each cell and synapse node under various light intensity on the retina.

  • In order to measure the retina thickness, the retina photographing system and the multi-channel high speed image data acquisition system is developed. This system requires the optical processing techniques and the high speed image processing techniques. The HeNe laser beam is projected the retina in artificial eye and then we sensed the reflected laser signal using APD array. The laser projection system on retina using optical instruments is implemented. In order to project the plane laser beam on retina, laser photographing system used the polygon mirror for horizontal scanning and the galvano mirror for vertical scanning. We acquired retina images in each channel of APD array, transferred computer using PCI interface the image data after real-time A/D converting.

  • Objectives of this study were to develop an application method of a numerical retina using the finite element model and to investigate the performance of image features extraction in comparison to the textural analysis. Using a plant community of radish sprouts, excellent resolution of the finite element retina was revealed. The sensitivity analysis of the finite element retina from engineering point of view was discussed. The importance of sensitivity analysis of the finite element retina was pointed out in terms of extraction of effective image features of plant community . Technical details of maximizing the sensitivity of the finite element retina to populated plant canopy were also discussed.

  • We isolated and sequenced a human retina cDNA fragment that encodes 25 kDa thiol peroxidase. A search of a databank showed that the 25 kDa thiol peroxidase from retina is the same type of thiol peroxidase which exists in human brain and red blood cells. This type of tbiol peroxidase was distributed in all of the tested tissues including retina. This result suggests a physiological role for the 25 kDa thiol peroxidase as an important antioxidant.

  • An artificial retina using thin-film photodiodes (TFPDs) and thin-film transistors (TFTs) is proposed. The characteristics of a TFPD and TFTs are measured, and the circuits of the retina pixel and retina array are designed. It is confirmed that the artificial retina can achieve edge enhancement and control photo-sensitivity.

  • In order to measure the retina thickness, there are to need the 3-D retina photographing and the high speed signal processing system. In this paper, we introduced the retina photographing system and the 16-channel high speed image data acquisition system. There are able to measure the retina thickness with sensing image the returned laser signal to APD sensor after there were projected the HeNe laser on retina. We developed the laser projection system to sense a reflected image of the retina using APD sensor, the 16-channel high speed A/D converter and PCI master interface card for image transmission into computer.

  • The present study was carried out to investigate the processes of the ultrastructural differentiation and the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activities of the developing rat retina. The results are as follows. The retina of fetal rat on the 13th day of gestation showed the early stage of differentiation. Briefly, there appeared dividing chromosomes, the plentiful free ribosomes, and the high ratio of nucleus to cytoplasm. The reaction products by AChE were localized at the membrane of endoplasmic reticulum and on the outer membrane of nucleus. Ultrastructures and AChE activities in the retina of the fetal rats on the 18th day of gestation were similar to those of the prior stages, except the appearence of rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus. According to the ultrastructural observations, the rat retina was still in immature state at birth, but the pigment epithelial cells were fully differentiated, e. g. the increase of melanin granules, the development of mitochondria and Golgi apparatus. The AChE activity was weekly detected. The differentiated retinal layers and the outer segment of photoreceptor cells were observed on the 7th postnatal day. And the pigment epithelium appeared to be fully differentiated. On the 14th postnatal day, rat retina were completely differentiated. In other words, the rat retina was characterized by the prominent outer segments, phagocytosed residues in the pigment epithelium, and the localization of reaction products by AChE in the synapses. In conclusion, the differentiation of rat retina is charaterized by the changes of cell shape, the increase of retinal layers, and the alterations of AChE activities. It seems that rat retina is to be functional from 2 weeks of birth onward, coinciding with the eye opening of the juvenile rats.

  • In a typical initial setup of a PCB component inspection system, operators should manually input various information such as category, position, and inspection area for each component to be inspected, thus causing much inconvenience and longer setup time. Although there are many deep learning based object detectors, RetinaNet is regarded as one of best object detectors currently available. In this paper, a method using an extended RetinaNet is proposed that automatically detects its component category and position for each component mounted on PCBs from a high-resolution color input image. We extended the basic RetinaNet feature pyramid network by adding a feature pyramid layer having higher spatial resolution to the basic feature pyramid. It was demonstrated by experiments that the extended RetinaNet can detect successfully very small components that could be missed by the basic RetinaNet. Using the proposed method could enable automatic generation of inspection areas, thus considerably reducing the setup time of PCB component inspection systems.

  • Based on electrophysiological retina mechanism, a retina model is proposed, which has similar response characteristics compared with the real primate retina. Photoreceptors, horizontal cells, and bipolar cells are modeled based on the previously studied retina models. And amacrine cells known to have relation to movements detection, and bipolar cell terminals are newly modeled using 3 NDP mechanism. The proposed model verified by analyzing the spatial response characteristics to stationary and moving stimuli, and characteristics for different speeds. Through this retina model, human vision system could be applied to computer vision systems for movement detection, and it could be the basic research for the implantable artificial retina.
