Immobilization of anaerobic ammonium oxidizing bacteria has been studied to enhance the biomass retention of the slowly growing bacteria and the process stability. The purpose of this study was to compare the nitrogen removal efficiency of granular and immobilized anammox bacteria with poly vinyl alcohol and alginate. The specific anammox activity of the granular, homoginized and immobilized anammox bacteria were $0.016{\pm}0.0002gN/gVSS/d$, $0.011{\pm}0.001gN/gVSS/d$ and $0.007{\pm}0.0005gN/gVSS/d$, respectively. Although the activity decreased to 43.7 % of the original one due to low pH and $O_2$ exposure during the homogination and the immobilization, it was rapidly recovered within 7 days in the following continuous culture. When synthetic T-N concentrations of 100, 200, 400, 800 mg/L were fed, the immobilized anammox bacteria showed higher nitrogen removal efficiencies at all operational conditions than those of granular anammox bacteria. When the sludge retention time was shorten below 30.7 days and the reject water was fed, the nitrite removal efficiency of the granular anammox bacteria dropped to 8 % of the initial value, while that of the immobilized anammox bacteria was maintained over 95 % of the initial one. The immobilization with poly vinyl alcohol and alginate would be a feasible method to improve the performance and stability of the anammox process.
To study stability of distilled herbal medicine, we chose changes in UV spectrum, pH, conductivity, and HPLC chromatogram. Aconiti Lateralis preparata Radix and Scutellariae Radix were selected and studied. There ws no consistancy in UV spectrums of preparatons and in duration. The changes in pH and conductivity were not correlated to those in UV spectrums. HPLC chromatograms were also compared each other depending on the preparations. One interesting peak of distilled Aconiti solution was appeared at 40 min retention time which was not identified yet. Ingeneral, UV spectrum, pH, conductivity measurements are pretty poor tool to study stability of herbal medicine although HPLC analysis should be studied further.

The success of complete denture prosthesis is to satisfy three basic requirements for the edentulous patient : maximum comfort, efficiency, and esthetic appearance. This can be achieved only if the dentures are both stable and retentive. When the residual alveolar ridge has resorbed significantly, stability and retention are more dependent on the correct position of the teeth and external surfaces of the denture. The stability and retention of the denture can be improved by locating the denture in the neutral zone and reproducing exact mandibular border movement for balanced occlusion. The neutral zone philosophy is based upon the concept that there exists a specific area where the musculature function will not unseat the denture in the mouth. In here, forces generated by the tongue are neutralized by the forces generated by the lips and cheeks. One of the simplest methods for recording border movements in three dimensions is to make stereographic record of condylar movement. Stereographs are made in the mouth during mandibular movement with intraoral clutches and central bearing point, and used in dictating the condylar movement on the articulator later by generating the condylar paths in doughy acrylic resin. Its procedure is simpler and more convenient than that of Pantograph. In this clinical report, we introduce the concept of neutral zone and stereograph in complete denture fabrication.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare and analyze the peri-implant tissue conditions and prospective clinical outcomes associated with 2 types of hydroxyapatite (HA)-coated implants: (1) fully HA-coated implants and (2) partially HA-coated implants with resorbable blast medium on the coronal portion of the threads. Methods: Forty-four partially edentulous patients were randomly assigned to undergo the placement of 62 HA-coated implants, and were classified as the control group (partially HA-coated, n=30) and the test group (fully HA-coated, n=32). All patients had chronic periodontitis with moderate crestal bone loss around the edentulous area. The stability and clinical outcomes of the implants were evaluated using the primary and secondary implant stability quotient (ISQ), as well as radiographic, mobility, and peri-implant soft tissue assessments around the implants. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test and the Mann-Whitney test were used to evaluate differences between and within the 2 groups, with P values <0.05 considered to indicate statistical significance. Results: The fully HA-coated implants displayed good retention of crestal bone, and insignificant differences were found in annual marginal bone loss between the 2 types of HA-coated implants (P>0.05). No significant differences were found in the survival rate (group I, 100%; group II, 100%) or the success rate (group I, 93.3%; group II, 93.8%). The fully HA-coated implants also did not significantly increase the risk of peri-implantitis (P>0.05). Conclusions: The fully HA-coated implants did not lead to an increased risk of peri-implantitis and showed good retention of the crestal bone, as well as good survival and success rates. Our study suggests that fully HA-coated implants could become a reliable treatment alternative for edentulous posterior sites and are capable of providing good retention of the crestal bone.

The purpose of the current report is to present 6-year long-term stability and 10-year follow-up data for an adult patient who was treated with a tongue elevator for relapsed anterior open-bite. The 19-year-old male patient presented with the chief complaint of difficulty in chewing his food. Collectively, clinical and radiographic examinations revealed an anterior open-bite, low tongue posture, and tongue-tie. The patient opted for orthodontic treatment alone, without any surgical procedure. A lingual frenectomy was recommended to avoid the risk of relapse, but the patient declined because he was not experiencing tongue discomfort. Initial treatment of the anterior open-bite with molar intrusion and tongue exercises was successful, but relapse occurred during the retention period. A tongue elevator was used for retreatment, because the approach was minimally invasive and suited the patient's requirements regarding discomfort, cost, and time. The appliance changed the tongue posture and generated an altered tongue force, which ultimately resulted in intrusive dentoalveolar effects, and a subsequent counterclockwise rotation of the mandible. The results showed long-term stability and were maintained for six years through continual use of the tongue elevator. The results of this case indicated that a tongue elevator could be used not only as an alternative treatment for open-bite, but also as an active retainer.

In case with severely atrophied mandibular ridges, it may be difficult to achieve adequate retention and stability of dentures through the normal functional impression process of complete dentures. In these patients, an approach using the neutral zone raising technique may be an effective alternative. The neutral zone is defined as the area where the pressure of the tongue towards the outside of the mouth and the pressure of the cheek and lips towards the inside are balanced during the normal oral function of the muscular-nervous system. Complete dentures made through neutral zone impression not only improve retention and stability, but also provide adequate tongue space in the posterior teeth area. Additionally, food residues are reduced in the area around artificial teeth, and aesthetics are improved through appropriate facial support.

Ultrathin atomic layer deposition (ALD) coatings were found to enhance the performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Previous studies have demonstrated that $LiCoO_2$ cathode powders coated with metal oxides with thicknesses of $\sim100-1000{\AA}$ grown using wet chemical techniques improved LIB performance. In this study, $LiCoO_2$ powders were coated with conformal $Al_2O_3$ ALD films with thicknesses of only $\sim3-4{\AA}$ established using 2 ALD cycles. The coated $LiCoO_2$ powders exhibited a capacity retention of 89% after 120 charge-discharge cycles in the 3.3~4.5 V (vs. $Li/Li^+$) range. In contrast, the bare $LiCoO_2$ powders displayed only a 45% capacity retention. This dramatic improvement may result from the ultrathin $Al_2O_3$ ALD film acting to minimize Co dissolution or to reduce surface electrolyte reactions.
The separation method using chiral stationary phase in preparation of chiral compound was wildly used, but in this work, supercritical fluid chromatography was suggested in the stability to resolve the chiral mixtures. To determine the optimum operating condition of the racemic ibuprofen, the retention factor and resolution with change in pressures, temperatures and the contents of IPA % (vol.) in CO$_2$ were investigated. The retention factor was decreased with increase in pressure and decrease in temperature. The factor was also influenced by the content of IPA in mobile phase, while the resolution was worse with a increase in IPA %. From the experimental results, the desirable separation condition was 130 bar, 311.15 K and 4% IPA in CO$_2$. Compared to the asymmetric peak shape by liquid chromatography, that of supercritical fluid chromatography was symmetric which was a favorable condition for preparative separation.

Methyltransferase-like 3 (METTL3), a key component of the m6A methyltransferase complex, regulates the splicing, nuclear transport, stability, and translation of its target genes. However, the mechanism underlying the regulation of METTL3 expression by alternative splicing (AS) remains unknown. We analyzed the expression pattern of METTL3 after AS in human tissues and confirmed the expression of an isoform retaining introns 8 and 9 (METTL3-IR). We confirmed the different intracellular localizations of METTL3-IR and METTL3 proteins using immunofluorescence microscopy. Furthermore, the endogenous expression of METTL3-IR at the protein level was different from that at the mRNA level. We found that 3'-UTR generation by intron retention (IR) inhibited the export of METTL3-IR mRNA to the cytoplasm, which in turn suppressed protein expression. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to confirm the regulation of METTL3 gene expression by AS, providing evidence that the suppression of METTL3 protein expression by IR is an integral part of the mechanism by which 3'-UTR generation regulates protein expression via inhibition of RNA export to the cytoplasm.
Tetramethylpyrazine (TMP), an alkaloid rich in Ligusticum wallichii and fermented products, possesses multiple pharmacological activities in antioxidant, antiinflammatory, and antibacterial. This study aimed to investigate the effect of TMP (15 mg/L) on the physicochemical and gelation properties of rabbit myofibrillar proteins (MPs) with/without oxidative stress. Results showed that compared to the control, oxidative stress to MPs decreased free thiol content, gel yield, whiteness, water-holding capacity, bounder water, immobilized water, and endogenous tryptophan fluorescence intensity, but increased surface hydrophobicity, dityrosine content, and free water content (p<0.01). Without oxidative stress, MPs treated with TMP increased free thiol content, whiteness, and bound water, but decreased dityrosine content and free water (p<0.05). Under oxidative conditions, all parameters were conversely affected by TMP (p<0.01). The results suggest that TMP can be an antioxidant to decrease the concern on oxidative deterioration during meat processing and storage by improving the oxidative stability, water retention, and gel forming property of rabbit MPs.
