An Empirical Approach to Evaluate Management Performance Using a Trading Area Analysis: Focus on Small and Medium-sized Retail Businesses

  • Purpose - This paper proposes measurement models to evaluate the management performance of small and medium-sized retail businesses on the basis of a trading area analysis that compares their proposed revenue to actual revenue in the trading area. Research design, data, methodology - The study proposes measurement models consisting of five stages, namely: (1) district background survey, (2) customer survey, (3) competitor survey, (4) business district survey, and (5) business performance analysis. Results - To identify business districts easily, this study preferred a minor-adjusted method based on the Euclidean distance, as it is simple to employ for the small and medium-sized businesses. This model was applied to select coffee shops in Daejeon. Results indicated that although the targeted shop was not located in an appropriate location, actual sales were higher than expected. Conclusions - Small- or medium-sized retail businesses face difficulties regarding the economies of scale and brand recognition and must choose an appropriate location to ensure management stability. However, such businesses will find it difficult to evaluate their competitive edge accurately using a trading area analysis.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine how the interface between "place of work" and "place of living" in the housing sphere has changed, and to understand its social background. During the korean modernization period, changes in economic structure toward industry has an influence on many aspects of modem life in addition to occupations. The traditional mixing of heterogeneous activities in the home-such as between reproduction and household affairs, first changed into a coexistence of two spaces with different functions within the boundaries of home, and finally into a spatial separation between functions in an urban dimension. As a result of this process, the primary role of the modem home is as a place for relaxation without work. One important kind of home, in which a retail shop is integrated with it, was researched as a transitional form. Its spatial layout showed a various combined usage of both spaces. In conclusion, changes in relevant macro-social aspects are very concretely reflected m the function and spatial organization of the home.

Korean Customer Attitudes Towards Retail Regulations

  • Purpose - This study is to identify how the retail regulations influence customer shopping behaviours and furthermore, whether the Store Closing Act really protects independent retailers as well as traditional markets in Korea. Research design, data, and methodology - By adopting frequency analysis and factor analysis method, the research achieved research objectives. Before a field survey, the authors pre-tested the questionnaire developed, based on similar previous articles, and finalized. Amongst the 353 questionnaires distributed, 332 were returned. It means the response rate is 94.5%. Furthermore, available questionnaires are 330. Results - Rather than stimulating customers to more frequently visit public markets, the regulation has provoked new customer shopping behaviours. In other words, some consumers tend to shop in big box retailers before or after a store closing day, whereas others are likely to stop shopping. What is important is that customers do not patronise small retailers and conventional markets, thanks to the Store Closing Act. Conclusions - In order to keep retailers and public markets independent, the researchers suggest that the government should introduce new techniques without impeding the growth of a retailing sector.

식품판매업소의 냉장.냉동 진열대의 온도 관리 조사연구 (A Survey of the Temperature Control of Refrigerators and Freezers in Retail Food Shops)

  • The number of food establishments selling raw and convenience foods are increasing in Korea, and people enjoy purchasing and eating foods at these shops. However, there are only a few reports on the temperature control of the refrigerators and freezers at retail food shops. This study was performed to investigate the temperature control of refrigerators and freezers in retail food shops in Daegu. The survey was carried out from July 20 to August 30 in 2001. The trained surveyors visited the twenty retail food shops (four department stores, eight marts/supermarkets and eight convenience stores) in the 8 major areas of Daegu and inspected the temperature control of 48 refrigerators for dairy products, fruits & vegetables, and rolled rice & sandwiches, and 52 freezers for ice cream & sherbet, frozen food, and frozen fish. The percentage of the refrigerators, and freezers with unsafe temperatures higher than the recommended safe temperature (10℃ for refrigerators, and -18℃ for freezers) was 42%; 45.8% in refrigerators; 38.5% in freezers. On an average, the bigger the size of the shop, the better than the other freezers. On the other hand, the temperature control of refrigerator for fruits & vegetables was the worst because they were usually open. Actual temperatures in the refrigerators and freezers were found to be significantly higher than the reading on the thermometers attached to the refrigerators and freezers(p<0.05). These results indicate that temperature control of refrigerators and freezers at retail food shops should be monitored several times each day, and should have strict inspection. There should be more detailed legal standard and specification for temperature control of refrigerators and freezers at retail food shops to prevent foodborne illness from unsafely stored food.

소매점내 상점절도 행위와 그 영향요인에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Shoplifting Behavior and Its Influencing Factors in the Retail Shop)

  • 경제상황이 악화됨에 따라 상점절도와 같은 생계형 범죄의 발생률이 크게 높아지고 있다. 상점절도(shoplifting)란 백화점이나 대형마트, 슈퍼마켓 등의 소매점내에서 발생하는 절도행위를 말한다. 상점절도의 경제적 사회적 위험성에도 불구하고 아직 상점절도에 대한 학술적인 연구는 거의 없는 실정이다. 본 연구는 소매점내 상점절도 태도와 그 영향요인을 분석한 연구로서 이 분야에 대한 학술적 연구의 기초를 제공하고, 상점절도행위의 감소 내지방지를 위한 시사점을 제공하기 위해 수행되었다. 기존 연구들에서 상점절도 행위나 태도에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타난 경제적 동기, 친구관계, 자극추구성향, 경험적 동기, 강박구매성향이 독립변수로 사용되었으며, 상점절도 태도를 종속변수로 사용하였다. 부산시내 4년제 대학 재학생들을 대상으로 한 실증분석 결과 친구 관계와 강박구매성향이 상점절도 태도에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 반면에 경제적 동기, 자극추구성향, 경험적 동기는 상점절도 태도와는 유의적인 관련성을 발견할 수 없었다. 결론에서는 이러한 연구결과가 주는 시사점을 제시하였다.

서울시 프랜차이즈 커피점 입지의 영향요인 -스타벅스 커피전문점을 중심으로- (A Study on the Influential Factors for Location of the Franchized Coffee shop in Seoul -focused on the Starbucks Coffee shop-)

  • 이 연구의 목적은 다중 회귀 분석을 사용하여 스타벅스 커피숍의 위치에 영향을 미치는 요인을 탐색하는 것이다. 이 연구는 위치 이론에 기반을 두고 있으며 이 분석을 위한 자료는 522개 서울시 상가 부동산 임대사례에서 수집하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 스타벅스 커피숍의 위치에 영향을 미치는 가장 중요한 요인은 월세, 보증금, 그리고 상가권리금이다. 둘째, 기업과 직원의 수, 지역경제 기반, 위치 특성, 상가보증금, 상가월세, 상가권리금이 서울의 스타벅스 커피숍의 입지에 영향을 준다. 셋째, 커피숍 입지 선정 과정에서 보증금, 월세, 상가권리금, 사업체의 수가 중요한 것으로 나타났다.

대우한국시상령수차대적연구(对于韩国时尚零售借贷的研究) (An Exploratory Study on Fashion Retail Borrowing in Korea)

  • 现在已有一些旨在解决韩国不道德消费行为的研究, 然而大部分研究把重心放在购买假冒伪劣产品或者入店行窃上. 服装的高额回报率和曾经的服装回扣被认为是时尚产业的问题领域. 然而, 很少研究者致力于这一问题的解决. 因此, 本研究目的在于, 通过使用一种混合的方法路径来探讨消费者零售借贷的经验. 实验一主要通过小组面谈的方式来探讨韩国消费者零售借贷的经验. 实验二通过在线调查的结果显示服装消费者对于零售借贷行为的态度. 调查结果促进了研究人员和从业人员对于零售借贷行为的理解, 同时也深入洞察了服装零售业中的零售借贷问题. 在研究1中, 我们把在过去一年中有零售借贷行为的人分成七组进行五次集中讨论. 参加了这次讨论的韩国消费者中, 有35个在大城市居住. 大部分消费者都是20来岁(21岁), 且以女性居多(24个). 大部分的参与者从一个零售商处购进一批服装, 然后对旧的衣物不是要求全额退款就是就是要求将旧的衣物更换成新的. 零售借贷行为的动机包括社会需要, 工作需要, 时尚需要和 "智能购物" 的理念. 与其他国家现有的研究的结论相似, 在分析时装商店的零售借贷现象时, 最经常被提到的原因是社会需要. 而消费者的道德价值观, 对大公司的态度, 以往的借贷消费经历, 也被认为是影响消费者的零售借贷行为的可能因素. 在研究2中, 收集数据的问卷是基于第一部分研究的成果和其他现有研究结果设计的. 问卷的问题主要关注消费者的道德信仰, 寻求刺激的倾向, 自我价值, 过去的零售工作经验, 零售贷款的经验, 以及他们的一些群体特征等等. 数据的收集是由首尔一家商业网络研究公司的在线调查小组来完成的. 为了保证样本的多样化和有效性, 该公司设计了这样的抽样配额(男: 女= 1:1, 20岁: 30岁: 40岁= 1:1:1, 零售经验: 没有零售经验= 1:3). 共有401个在前6个月有过购买服装经历的消费者参加了这次网上调查. 结果显示19.7%的受访者都表示他们曾经有过借贷购买时尚商品的经历. 在这些受访者中, 男性借贷人约占57%, 多于女性借贷人. 通过年龄的分布来看, x2 显示在拥有或者没有零售借贷经历的受访人之间存在着统计学上的差异: 有41.8%的受访者是在40岁的时候拥有零售借贷经历, 而那些没有零售借贷经历的受访者大约分布在20岁到40岁之间. 在收入方面, 拥有或者没有零售借贷经历的受访者之间也有很大的不同: 前者较于后者, 收入要高一些. T测试主要是在有或者没有零售借贷经验的受访者之间进行比较, 对比他们的时尚购物行为, 道德信念, 感觉寻求的倾向和对零售借贷行为的态度. 与那些没有借贷经验的受访者相比, 有经验者更趋向于频繁的购买时尚物品或者花费更多的钱用在购买时尚物品上. 有借贷购买经验的顾客往往比无经验者有更高的寻求新奇刺激的倾向. 一份回馈的分析表明对于时尚物品零售借贷购买的态度和顾客的道德信仰呈负相关, 但是与每月购买时尚物品的频率, 对新奇事物感觉趋向的走势以及过去的时尚物品零售借贷的经验呈正相关. 在这些变数之中, 过往的零售借贷经验是最重要的预测因素, 道德信念紧随其后. 本次研究作为初次尝试旨在了解零售借贷行为基础背后的动机和影响这些行为的要素. 这次研究的结果可以使我们对消费者零售借贷行为有更深一步的理解, 并为解决方法提供一个基础, 以帮助减少零售借贷行为和时装零售商店的不适当回扣. 这个结果也可以长期为消费者教育提供资料. 为了更好的理解时尚零售借贷行为, 未来还有更多的研究亟待进行.

소비자의 구매행동에 영향을 미치는 상점조명 연출에 관한 연구 (A Study of Lighting Design in a Retail Store to Perform Customer's Transaction)

  • Lighting is the single most important part of the design of a retail store. Good lighting can enhance a product's appearance, accentuate a special display, balance the visual elements of a store, and create the proper mood. In shops the lighting is required to draw the customer's attention to the goods help him to appraise them, and provide an atmosphere conducive to sales. The method will vary according to the types of good displayed, the form of trading, the design of the shop, and the class of customers expected. For the all reason, this study is focused on how the lighting design effects the customer's interest to the goods and intended to prescribe the possibilities of effective lighting design.

Consumers' Perceptions toward Immoral Shopping Behaviors in Apparel Retailing

  • This study investigated the differences of consumers' perception toward immoral shopping behavior when they shop in apparel retail stores by consumer characteristics such as ethical ideology and gender. Forsyth's(1980) ethical ideology measuring idealism and relativism was used. Three hundred twenty-five college students enrolled at a large university located in a metropolitan area participated in the study. These students were divided into four groups on the basis of their ethical ideology: situationist, subjectivist, exceptionist, or absolutist. A series of factor analyses revealed three factors of immoral shopping behaviors: shoplifting, active immoral shopping behaviors, and passive immoral shopping behaviors. The four groups significantly differed in regard to their perceptions toward active immoral shopping behaviors and passive immoral shopping behaviors. T-tests revealed that females tended to perceive shoplifting and passive immoral shopping behavior factor worse than males. The results of this study would be used for developing consumer educational programs and retail training programs.

와인 이용 행태에 따른 와인 선택 속성에 관한 연구 - 와인 소매점 이용고객을 중심으로 - (A Study on Wine Selection Attributes by Wine Use Behavior - Focused on Wine Retail Shop Customers -)

  • 최근 몇 년 전부터 불기 시작한 웰빙(well-being) 트렌드와 소비자들의 건강에 대한 관심 증폭으로 인하여 소비자의 주류 패턴에도 변화가 일어나기 시작하였다. 특히 적당한 와인이 동맥경화, 심장병, 노화 방지 등 각종 성인병의 예방에 좋다는 연구 결과가 속속 발표되면서 와인의 소비를 가속시키고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 와인 구매 및 음용 시 고려하는 선택 속성 중요도를 파악하여 고객 만족과 와인 대중화, 저변화에 기여함을 그 목적으로 하였다. 문헌 연구와 실증 연구를 병행한 본 연구는 와인 소매점에서 구매 경험이 있는 서울지역의 내국인 거주자 및 주간 상주 인구를 대상으로 2008년 12월 1일부터 31일까지 설문조사를 하였다. 설문조사에서 수집된 자료의 분석방법은 SPSS 12.0 통계패키지 프로그램을 활용하여 빈도분석, 요인분석, 신뢰성 검증, 일원배치분산분석, 다중회귀분석으로 인구통계학적 특성과 이용 행태에 따른 와인 소비자의 선택 속성 중요도를 분석하였다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 음용 횟수, 음용 장소, 정보 원천을 제외한 생산지, 구매처, 구매 비용, 와인 음용 동반자에 따라 와인 구매 및 음용에 유의적 차이를 나타내었다. 둘째, 브랜드 특성, 건강상의 역할 등의 와인 선택 속성 요인은 고객 만족에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다.
