  • This study is aimed at understanding the role of arsenic in Roxarsone in causing fatty livers in mule ducks. One hundred 10-week-old mule ducks were randomly divided into 5 groups. Ducks received 2 weeks of various treatments followed by 2 weeks of withdrawal. The treatments were non-treatment (control), 300 mg/kg Roxarsone inclusion for 2 weeks ($1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ week), Roxarsone inclusion for one week ($2^{nd}$ week only), restrict feeding, or Roxarsone analogue (3-nitro-4-hydroxyphenyl acid) inclusion. Results showed that feed intake and body weight in the Roxarsone groups and the restrict feeding group decreased significantly during the treatment period. However only the liver and heart weights were significantly decreased (p<0.05) in the restrict feeding group. Fatty acid synthetase (FAS) activity showed a significant decrease (p<0.05) in the Roxarsone groups and the restrict feeding group, two-week-Roxarsone treatment significantly increased NADP-malic dehydrogenase (MDH) activity compared to the restrict (p<0.05). After 2 weeks drug withdrawal, the 1-week-Roxarsone or restrict feeding group showed significantly increased (p<0.05) glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PDH) activity (p<0.05). Two-week-Roxarsone treatment significantly decreased (p<0.05) the high density lipoprotein (HDL) and increased (p<0.05) the low density lipoprotein (LDL) and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) ratio. After drug withdrawal, the 1-week-Roxarsone or restrict feeding group showed significantly increased (p<0.05) creatine kinase (CK) activity. The 2-week-Roxarsone treatment group showed significantly increased (p<0.05) aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activity. The restrict feeding treatment group showed significantly decreased (p<0.05) total protein (TP) concentration. After drug withdrawal, the related enzyme activities in the blood that reflected the liver function were restored to the normal physiological range, except for the total bilirubin concentration and CK activity in the 1-week-Roxarsone group. This group showed a significant increase (p<0.05). Thus, the reasons for liver enlargement in the Roxarsone and restrict feeding groups were different.

  • In the present study, several different types of PSD performance test systems were reviewed. Basically there are two methods to pulsate the system; whole-feeding-system pulsation and working-fluid pulsation. The latter method adopts either a piston-type pulsator or a restrict-type pulsator The working-fluid pulsation using a restrict-type pulsator was considered to be the most appropriate experimental system to study the effects of the primary parameters, and a practical design of the system was proposed.

  • An experiment was conducted to compare the effects of early feed restriction on the performance and abdominal fat deposition in broilers. The treatments consisted of providing feed ad libitum (Full-fed) and three feed restriction treatments of restricting feeding between 8-21 days of age (DOA) either for a duration of 7 days or 14 days. The three feed restriction treatments were Restrict 8-14 DOA, Restrict 8-21 DOA and Restrict 15-21 DOA. Live weights and feed consumption were obtained at weekly intervals. Samples of both male and female broilers were taken at 43 DOA to determine the weight of abdominal fat, liver and gizzards. Feed efficiency was generally improved by feed restriction, but a compensatory gain was not observed in the restricted groups. Broilers on restricted feeding also had lower mortality as compared to the full-fed broilers. There is no effect of early feed restriction on the weight of the abdominal fat and the dressing percentages but the weights of the liver and gizzard were affected by restriction. Also there was an effect of sex on the weights of the abdominal fat, the liver and gizzard of the males and females.

  • The growth and health of the fetus and neonate are directly influenced by the nutritional and physiological status of sows. Sows are often under catabolic conditions due to restrict feeding program during pregnancy and low voluntary feed intake during lactation. The current restrict feeding program, which aims at controlling energy intake during gestation, results in an inadequate supply of dietary protein for fetal and mammary gland growth. Low voluntary feed intake during lactation also causes massive maternal tissue mobilization. Provision of amino acids and fatty acids with specific functions may enhance the performance of pregnant and lactating sows by modulating key metabolic pathways. These nutrients include arginine, branched-chain amino acids, glutamine, tryptophan, proline, conjugated linoleic acids, docosahexaenoic acid, and eicosapentaenoic acid, which can enhance conception rates, embryogenesis, blood flow, antioxidant activity, appetite, translation initiation for protein synthesis, immune cell proliferation, and intestinal development. The outcome is to improve sow reproductive performance as well as fetal and neonatal growth and health. Dietary supplementation with functional amino acids and fatty acids holds great promise in optimizing nutrition, health, and production performance of sows and piglets. • The present study deals with the experimental facility for PSD (POGO Suppression Device) performance test systems. Basically there are two methods to pulsate the system; whole-feeding-system pulsation and working-fluid pulsation. The latter method adopts either a piston-type pulsator or a restrict-type pulsator. The working-fluid pulsation using a restrict-type pulsator was considered to be the most appropriate experimental system to study the effects of the primary parameters, and a practical design of the system was proposed. Also, the experimental facility adopts the ball valve type pulsator considering the leak problem of the plate type pulsator.

  • In this Study, the types of PSD performance test systems were reviewed. And as a results of that reviewing process, a suitable PSD performance test system type for PSD design was proposed. PSD performance test systems can be classified with pulsating methods - the pulsating whole feeding system and the pulsating working fluid. The pulsating working fluid method can be re-classified with the devices of pulsating working fluid - a piston-type pulsator and a restrict-type pulsator. The pulsating-working-fluid performance test system with restrict-type pulsator was proposed to be a suitable type for identification of main-design-parameters.

  • The most important times during the development of young chicks are the days immediately prior to hatching and the days immediately after hatching, known as the perinatal period. A sufficient supply of nutrients during the perinatal period is a crucial during the late stage of embryonic development and the starvation period of the young chicks. The delayed post-hatch holding time can restrict the development of the gastrointestinal tract, reduce final body weight, impair muscle development, and change immunological capacities. These symptoms are deleterious to the development of young chicks. Therefore, the post-hatch holding time and its influence on the fitness of young chicks are major concerns to the poultry industry. The in ovo feeding is a practical technology for perinatal nutrition to optimize poultry production and for attenuating the stress experienced by fasting young chicks. This study will discuss in ovo feeding and its effect on the development of the chick embryo, the establishment of a healthy microbiota, and the improving immune response.

  • The objective of this study was to propse the way that could enlarge the course In life for the graduates of Department of Food and Nutrition in Junior College. This study was carried out through the analysis of statistical data and questionnaires gathered from professors of Department of Food and Nutrition in Junior College and from dieticians of industry, school and hospital. The results of this study could be summarized as follows. 1. The cultivation number of dieticians is too excessive in comparison with the need, and so It is necessary for the colleges to restrict the row establishment of Department of Food and Nutrition for a time, and for the government to tighten the employment system of dieticians. 2. The employment of dieticians will be extended to such fields as school, hospital public health center and counsel office of nutrition to act as a nutritional educator or a medical server in the future, and consequently the colleges which cultivate dieticians should improve the curriculum to agree with this. 3. It is necessary for the government to renovate the system of dietician arrangement to such a way as establishes a new rule in which additional dietician Should be employed In accordance with the feeding number in industry and hospital, as restricts the position-combine of a dietician with a cook in a large feeding institute, as gives the qualification of a nutritional instructor only to the diatician at public health center, as gives the qualification of a nutrition -teacher to the dieticians who completed the course of study for the teaching profession and then allows them to act as a nutrition-teacher in school. 4. The way to give a higher grade of educational opportunity should be given to the graduates of Department of Food and Nutrition in Junior College for the supplement of dietician's faculty.

  • The study was conducted to investigate the growth performance of two strains of Korean domestic chickens (KDC, i.e., 1A, and 2A). A total of 600, one-day-old female chicks were allocated in a completely randomized design to give 15 replicates for each strain (10 birds per pen). The chickens were fed (week 0 to 6: ad libitum; week 6 to 12: restricted feeding) commercial diets (week 0 to 5: crude protein 20.3% and metabolizable energy 3,059 kcal/kg; week 5 to 8: crude protein 18.6% and metabolizable energy 3,123 kcal/kg, and week 8 to 12: crude protein 16.7% and metabolizable energy 3,187 kcal/kg) together with fresh water. Body weight (BW) and feed intake were measured bi-weekly to calculate the average daily feed intake (ADFI), average daily gain (ADG), and subsequently the feed conversion ratio (FCR). The results indicate that the 1A crossbreed had a higher (p < 0.05) BW compared to the 2A crossbreed from week 6 to 10. A higher ADG (p < 0.05) was seen in the 1A crossbreed on week 6 and in the 2A crossbreed on week 8. Moreover, no difference (p > 0.05) was observed in the FCR between crossbreed 1A and 2A during the 12 weeks with the exception of week 8. Crossbreed 1A had (p < 0.05) an improved FCR compared to the 2A crossbreed on week 8. In conclusion, the 1A crossbreed had a higher growth performance compared to the 2A crossbreed for 12 weeks after hatching. This data can contribute by helping the KDC market.
