  • Purpose : This study was performed to comparison of distance change of subacromial space according to shoulder abduction angle in loaded and unloaded conditions. Methods : The subjects were 20 male college students, and the subacromial space was measured using an ultrasound diagnostic apparatus. The participants shoulder abduction was measured during each shoulder resting position and 45 ° abduction with loads of 1 kg, 2 kg, 3 kg. The collected data were analyzed by a paired t-test and repeated measure ANOVA with the SPSS (Ver. 22) program. Results : The subacromial space showed statistically significant decreased in 45 ° abduction than resting position (p<.001). All the subacromial space increased during the according to loads (1 kg, 2 kg, 3 kg) at the resting position but at 45 ° abduction showed statistically significant decreased as the load increases (p<.05). Also, subacromial space showed significant changes in the 2kg, 3kg compared with the 0kg loads. Conclusion : These results identified that shoulder abduction angle and load were related to subacromial space. When resting position, subacromial space is larger at loads than unload. As the load and shoulder abduction angle increase, subacromial space is reduced compared to resting.

  • We investigated the effects of intermittent hydrostatic pressure with various duration of resting period on changes in calcium ($Ca^{2+}$) concentration and adhesive forces of cells on substrates. The quantitive adhesive forces of cells were measured under various resting periods. When the pressure applied to the cells, the concentration of $Ca^{2+}$ increased. Under intermittent hydrostatic pressure, the concentration of $Ca^{2+}$ was maintained under a resting period of 15 min, while it was not decreased with other resting periods of less than 15 min. With a resting period of 15 min, the magnitudes of adhesive forces were significantly increase. In addition, the adhesive forces were measured with and without $Ca^{2+}$ chelating agents to evaluate the effect of $Ca^{2+}$ on cell adhesiveness. When $Ca^{2+}$ ions were chelated, the adhesive forces dramatically decreased, even under intermittent hydrostatic pressure. We conclude that $Ca^{2+}$ plays an crucial role in modulating the adhesive forces of cells, and that the concentration of $Ca^{2+}$ can be increased by intermittent hydrostatic stimuli.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to observe the change in the thickness of abdominal muscles when electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) is applied to the abdomen during rest and abdominal muscle exercise to investigate the effect of EMS applied to the abdomen on the superficial and deep muscles thickness. Design: Cross sectional design. Methods: Twenty healthy subjects participated in this study. Subjects were performed resting position, resting position with EMS, curl-up and curl-up with EMS. The electrode of the EMS belt is attached to the abdominal wall between the 12th rib and iliac crest. The thickness of abdominal muscles including rectus abdominis (RA), external oblique (EO), internal oblique (IO), and transverse abdominis (TrA) were captured in each position by ultrasound image during expiration. All subjects were performed four positions randomly. Data were analyzed using repeated ANOVA with the level of significance set at 𝛼=0.05. Results: The muscle thickness of RA, EO, IO and TrA were significantly different at each position (p<0.05). The thickness of all abdominal muscles increased significantly when curl-up than curl-up with EMS. Both RA and EO thickness were significantly increased at resting position than resting position and EMS were combined(p<0.05). But IO and TrA thickness were decreased at resting position when EMS were combined. Conclusions: The results suggest that EMS activates superficial abdominal muscles RA and EO. Therefore, abdominal strengthening exercise combined EMS can activate abdominal muscles and can be applied to various patients and rehabilitation in clinical practice.

  • A new approach using the differential quadrature method (DQM) is derived for analysis of non-uniform beams resting on nonlinear media in this study. The influence of velocity dependent viscous damping and strain rate dependent viscous damping is investigated. The results solved using the DQM have excellent agreement with the results solved using the FEM. Numerical results indicated that the DQM is valid and efficient for non-uniform beams resting on non-linear media.

  • The growth of subaerial microalgae on historic buildings or various cultural properties causes discoloration and physico-chemical deterioration of the surfaces. We collected a subaerial chlorophyte, Chlorella sp., from the stone Standing Buddha statue at Jungwon Miruksazi, which is a national treasure of Korea, and found dormant, thickwalled spores with regular pentagonal ornamentation along with the vegetative Chlorella cells. The morphology of Chlorella resting spores was compared to that of the other green algal resting cells. The ornamented spores and smooth-walled vegetative cells revived in 2 weeks in a liquid freshwater medium and started reproduction by autospores. To our knowledge, the ability of Chlorella to form ornamented dormant spores in drought condition was not previously recorded. The ornamentation of spores would supplement taxonomic characteristics of this genus.

  • We investigated the distribution of the marine cladoceran resting eggs in the intertidal sediments of Gomso Bay, Korea and compared the data with those in the subtidal sediments. The abundance of the eggs in the top 6cm of the sediments was higher than that in the other depths. The abundances of the eggs in seaward intertidal sediments below mean sea level (MSL) were higher than those in the sediments over MSL, but were not significantly different from those in the subtidal sediments. The distribution of the resting eggs of cladocerans in the intertidal sediments was affected by the grain-size and moisture content of sediments. The results of the present study suggest that the intertidal sediments as well as the subtidal sediments are a potential egg bank which plays important roles in population dynamics of zooplankton in coastal waters, in particular, recruitment of eggs into plankton.

  • The effect of viscous damping on stability of beam resting on an elastic foundation subjected to a dry friction force is analytically studied. The beam resting on an elastic foundation subjected to dry friction force is modeled for simplicity into a beam resting on Kelvin-Voigt type foundation subjected to distributed follower load. In particular, the effects of four boundary conditions (clamped-free, clamped-pinned, pinned-pinned, clamped-clamped) on the system stability are considered. The critical value and instability type of columns on the elastic foundation subjected to a distributed follower load is investigated by means of finite element method for four boundary conditions. The elastic foundation modulus, viscous damping coefficient and boundary conditions affect greatly both the instability type and critical load. Also, the increase of damping coefficient raises the critical flutter load (stabilizing effect) but reduces the critical divergence load (destabilizing effect).

  • Objective: In this study, we used resting-state fMRI data to map differences in functional connectivity between a comprehensive set of 8 distinct cortical and subcortical brain regions in healthy controls and Internet addicts. We also investigated the relationship between resting state connectivity strength and the level of psychopathology (ex. score of internet addiction scale and score of Barratt impulsiveness scale). Background: There is a lot of evidence of relationship between Internet addiction and impaired inhibitory control. Clinical evidence suggests that Internet addicts have a high level of impulsivity as measured by behavioral task of response inhibition and a self report questionnaire. Method: 15 Internet addicts and 15 demographically similar non-addicts participated in the current resting-state fMRI experiment. For the connectivity analysis, regions of interests (ROIs) were defined based on the previous studies of addictions. Functional connectivity assessment for each subject was obtained by correlating time-series across the ROIs, resulting in $8{\times}8$ matrixs for each subject. Within-group, functional connectivity patterns were observed by entering the z maps of the ROIs of each subject into second-level one sample t test. Two sample t test was also performed to examine between group differences. Results: Between group, the analysis revealed that the connectivity in between the orbito frontal cortex and inferior parietal cortex, between orbito frontal cortex and putamen, between the orbito frontal cortex and anterior cingulate cortex, between the insula and anterior cingulate cortex, and between amydgala and insula was significantly stronger in control group than in the Internet addicts, while the connectivity in between the orbito frontal cortex and insula showed stronger negative correlation in the Internet addicts relative to control group (p < 0.001, uncorrected). No significant relationship between functional connectivity strength and current degree of Internet addiction and degree of impulsitivy was seen. Conclusion: This study found that Internet addicts had declined connectivity strength in the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and other regions (e.g., ACC, IPC, and insula) during resting-state. It may reflect deficits in the OFC function to process information from different area in the corticostriatal reward network. Application: The results might help to develop theoretical modeling of Internet addiction for Internet addiction discrimination.
