  • Photonic crystals containing rugate structure result in a mirror with high reflectivity in a specific narrow spectral region and are prepared by applying a computer-generated pseudo-sinusoidal current waveform. Well defined 1-dimentional photonic polymer replicas showing a reflectivity at 534 nm have been successfully obtained by the removal of rugate porous silicon (PSi) template from the polystyrene composite film. XRD measurement indicates that the oxidized rugate PSi has been completely removed from the composite films. Polymer replicas exhibit a sharp resonance in the reflectivity spectrum. Optical characteristics of photonic polymer replicas indicate that the surface of polymer film has a negative structure of rugate PSi. These replicas are stable in aqueous solutions for several days without any degradation. The methods have been provided for the construction of photonic structures with polymers.

  • The electrooxidation of 8-(3-acetylimino-6-methyl 2,4-dioxopyran)-1-aminonaphthaline (AMDAN) in aqueous and non aqueous media led to the formation of polymeric films, poly (AMDAN). The monomer, undergo anodic oxidation through the formation of a monocation radical irrespective of the nature of the medium. In aqueous medium, the monocation radical undergoes, through its resonance structures, dimerisation involving tail-to-tail, head-to-tail and even head-to-head coupling. The products formed, being more easily oxidisable than the parent substance, undergo further oxidation at the same potential so that the overall oxidation involves a one-step (i.e., a single wave), two-electron process. In non-aqueous medium, the monocation radical does not undergo dimerisation through coupling reactions. Retaining its identity, monomer oxidise in two steps involving one electron in each step. The fact that the cathodic peaks corresponding to these anodic peaks are rarely observed indicates fast consumption of the electrogenerated monocation radicals and dications by follow-up chemical reactions to produce polymeric products (poly AMDAN). The electrochemical behavior of the formed polymer films was investigated in both non aqueous and aqueous media. The films prepared in non aqueous medium were found to be more electroactive than that the films prepared in aqueous medium. This is confirmed with the results in litreature which illustrate that the film prepared in aqueous solution hold water in its structure via hydrogen bonding, which causes decomposition reactions.

  • With the goal of enhancing the creep resistance of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), we performed gamma irradiation and post-irradiation annealing at a low temperature, and investigated the crystalline structures and mechanical properties of the samples. Electron spin resonance spectra reveal that most of the residual radicals are stabilized by annealing at 100$^{\circ}C$ for 72 h under vacuum. Both the melting temperature and crystallinity increase after increasing the dose and by post-irradiation annealing. When irradiated with the same dose, the quenched sample having a higher amorphous fraction exhibits a lower swell ratio than does the slow-cooled sample. The measured tensile properties correlate well to the crystalline structure of the irradiated and annealed samples. For enhancing creep resistance, high crystallinity appears to be more critical than a high degree of crosslinking.

  • The inhibitory compound (Compound S) against Ralstonia solanacearum and its conversion product (Compound S') were isolated from the culture filtrate of Bacillus subtilis JW-1 using a series of chromatography procedures. The structures were elucidated as alanyl-L-${\beta}$-(2,3-epoxycyclohexyl-4-one)alanine and alanyl-L-${\beta}$-(2,3-dihydroxycyclohexyl-4-one)alanine, respectively on the basis of nuclear magnetic resonance spectral data, including $^1H$, $^{13}C$, $^1H-^1H$ correlation spectroscopy and heteronuclear multiple bond correlation spectroscopy. The compound S exhibited a broad antimicrobial activity against $G^+$, $G^-$ bacteria, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida albicans. The activity loss of the conversion product revealed that the epoxy function was essential for activity of Compound S.

  • Structural members are designed to maintain the load-carrying capacity as well as structural strength, and the structural serviceability such as the deflection, cracks, and vibration to give the occupants uncomfortable environment should be checked. Recently, the importance of the vibration has been issued since the Techno Mart accident due to vibration resonance. This study provides a passive vibration control system using the repulsion force of magnets to reduce dynamic vibrations. The systems is devised by importing the constraint condition by a hinge to operate magnets installed at two adjacent locations. The effectiveness of the proposed system is investigated by the vibration control test of a steel beam with and without the control system. It is illustrated in the test that the system is activated by the control forces executed by the magnets and can be utilized in reducing the dynamic responses. The system can be applied to pedestrian bridge and traffic bridge. The applicability is expected in the future by optimizing the factors to affect the dynamic responses like the intensity, mass, locations of magnets.

  • In this research, an active vibration suppression of a smart beam having piezoelectric sensor and actuators is investigated by designing separate controllers comprising a linear quadratic regulator and a neural network. Firstly, design of a smart beam which consists of a cantilever aluminum beam with surface bonded piezoelectric patches and a designed mechanism having a micro servomotor with a mass attached arm for obtaining variations in the frequency response function are presented. Secondly, the frequency response functions of the smart beam are investigated experimentally by using different piezoelectric patch combinations and the analytical models of the smart beam around its first resonance frequency region for various servomotor arm angle configurations are obtained. Then, a linear quadratic regulator controller is designed and used to simulate the suppression of free and forced vibrations which are performed both in time and frequency domain. In parallel to simulations, experiments are conducted to observe the closed loop behavior of the smart beam and the results are compared as well. Finally, active vibration suppression of the smart beam is investigated by using a linear controller with a neural network based adaptive element which is designed for the purpose of overcoming the undesired consequences due to variations in the real system.

  • In this paper, an active vibration control system using a voice coil type linear oscillating actuator(LOA) is studied to suppress structural vibration. Being compared with a hydraulic actuator, a LOA has simplified structure and requires a few elements in the driving system, so it has lots of merits with respect to economics and maintenance. The general mathematical dynamic model to obtain the algorithm for the realization of vibration active control system is treated. Actually, the performance test of the control system using LOA is carried out on a steel test structure under sinusoidal and white noise excitation. From this test it is conformed that acceleration level of test structure is reduced near the resonance region. In the future research on the application to large structures will be studied.

  • PURPOSES : This study is to compare sound transmission loss(STL) value depending on the four kinds of materials, PC(Polycarbonate), PMMA(Polymethyl mathacrylate), PE(Polyethlyene), PP(Polypropylene), and two types of structure, single layer and double with vacuum layer, of soundproof panel. METHODS : With four sorts of polymer material, the specimens were made as various structures, 4 mm and 8 mm of single soundpoof panel and vacuum layered 4 mm of one. The experimental condition and procedures were complied with authorized process test, KS F 2808. RESULTS : STL of single panel made of PC were the greatest followed by PMMA, PE, PP regardless of the thickness of panel, However, STL of PMMA panel began to decrease around 2500 Hz and reached the lowest value among others in 5000 Hz. Vacuum layer soundproof panel showed good performance in more than 2000 Hz. Only vacuum layer panel made of PC presented resonance frequency at 800 Hz while that of other vacuum ones at 1000 Hz. CONCLUSIONS : According to results of single layer, it was found that single panel functioned as the theorical way we expected in terms of surface density. That trends were blurred as the panel got thicker. And it was suggested also that vacuum layer panel performed well at high frequency, more than 2000 Hz.
