  • This study presents the design and manufacture of a self-contained breathing apparatus SCBA wireless communication module with a multipoint simultaneous full-duplex communication system to enable communication between team members wearing the SCBA system. It is necessary for fire-fighters to wear the SCBA system during extinguishing and rescue work at the fire site. Evaluation of the team communication module confirmed the feasibility of communication over more than 500 m in the test condition based on the line of sight. By implementing the Ad-hoc function, it was confirmed that the communication distance could be extended to 128 m by automatic routing up to 3 hoc. The vertical distance inside the building for successful communication was up to the 5th floor in the open staircase and up to the 3rd floor in the partitioned staircase. Furthermore, the performance testing of the communication module assuming a fire situation, confirmed that five team members correctly recognized the standard abbreviation of fire and wireless communication without a separate PTT key operation. In addition, the flame resistance was verified by exposing the module to a flame at 950 ± 50 ℃ for 5 s and then immediately extinguishing the flame.

  • Engine valve seat and face, which are the important factors affecting engine performance, are required to have wear, heat and corrosion resistance. In order to produce surface layer with these characteristics, PTA(plasma transferred arc) surfacing procedure is generally employed, but problems, such as large HAZ and high dilution etc., frequently occurr. Laser cladding, which overcomes the drawbacks of conventional technologies, can be employed to create a superior clad layer with low dilution, small heat affected zone, and minimal distortion. However, in case cladding is to be applied to a large area, it is necessary to overlap 1 pass clad layer because of limited clad layer width. Two criteria for the overlapping ratio-beam size and clad layer width-have been considered thus far. Upon inspection of multi pass clads, produced by different overlapping criteria, it was observed that the greater the increase in overlapping ratio, the greater was the decrease in clad layer width and increase in clad layer height regardless of the criterion used. However, a multi pass clad overlapped by the beam size criterion demonstrated a higher hardness value than a clad overlapped by the clad layer width owing to decreasing dilution of the substrate. In conclusion, the beam size was defined as the criterion for the overlapping, because the clad layer width increased or decreased depending upon process parameters.

  • Purpose: First introduced by Buncke and Rose in 1979, the neurovascular partial $2^{nd}$ toe pulp free tissue transfer has been attempted to reconstruct posttraumatic finger tip injuries. Although some surgeons prefer other reconstructive methods such as skin graft and local flap, we chose the partial $2^{nd}$ toe pulp flap owing to its many advantages. We report three successful surgical cases in which the patients had undergone this particular method of reconstruction. Methods: We retrospectively examined three cases of fingertip injury patients due to mechanical injury. Bone exposure was seen in all three cases, All had undergone partial toe pulp free flap for soft tissue defect coverage. Results: All flaps survived without any complications such as partial necrosis, hematoma or dehiscence. Although tingling sensation has returned in both cases, two-point discrimination has not returned yet. Currently no patient is complaining of any pain which gradually improved during their course of recuperation. All stitches were removed on postoperative 2 weeks. Patients are satisfied with the final surgical result and there are no signs of any edema or hematoma. Conclusion: The homodigital reconstruction of finger tip injury using the partial $2^{nd}$ toe pulp flap has numerous advantages compared to other reconstructive modalities such as its resistance to wear and tear and in that it provides a non-slip palmar digital surface. However it requires microsurgery which may not be preferred by surgeons. Advanced age of the patient can be a relative contraindication to this approach since atheromatous plaque from the donor toe can compromise flap circulation after surgery. We report three successful cases which patient age was considered appropriate. Further investigation with a larger number of cases and long term follow-up is deemed necessary.

  • Physical properties of composite resins such as strength, resistance to wear, discoloration, etc depend on the degree of conversion of the resin components. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the degree of conversion of the composite resins according to the thickness of tooth structure penetrated by light and applied light curing time. The coronal portions of extracted human teeth (one anterior tooth, three posterior tooth) was embedded by pink denture material. the mounted teeth were cut into three illumination sections (1mm thickness enamel section, 1mm thickness dentin section, 2mm thicknes dentin section) and one backing section with cutting wheel. Thin resin films were made by using 6kg pressure between slide glass during 5 minutes Thin resin film was light cured on coupled illumination section during 40sec, 80sec and 120sec. each illumination section was coupled as follows; no tooth structure(X), ename section(E), enamel section + 1mm dentin section(ED1), enamel section + 2mm dentin section(ED2), enamel section + 1mm dentin section + 2mm dentin section(EDD). To simulate the clinical situation more closely, thin resin films was cured against a backing section of tooth structure. The degree of conversion of carbon double bonds to single bonds in the resin films were examined by means of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer. The results were obtained as follows ; 1 As curing time was increased, conversion rate was increased and as tooth thickness which was penetrated by curing light was increased, conversion rate was decreased. 2. At all tooth thickness groups, conversion rate between 80sec and 120sec was not significantly increased(P>0.05). 3. At 40sec group and 80sec, conversion rate between no tooth structure(X) group and 1mm enamel section(E) group was not significantly decreased(P>0.05). 4. At 80sec group and 120sec, conversion rate between 1mm enamel section(E) group and 1mm enamel section + 1mm dentin section(ED1) group was not significantly decreased(P>0.05).

  • In this study, we synthesized a calcium sulfonate complex grease and a lithium complex grease to investigate their physical, rheological and tribological properties. The thermal stability of the calcium sulfonate was higher than $300^{\circ}C$ and the lithium complex grease was $245^{\circ}C$ in the dropping point test. In the grease viscosity measurement, the calcium sulfonate complex grease was measured as $7.0Pa{\cdot}s$ and the lithium complex grease was as $4.5Pa{\cdot}s$. Therefore, it was confirmed that the calcium sulfonate complex grease is superior to the lithium complex grease in terms of thermal stability and cohesiveness. In the 4-ball wear test, the calcium sulfonate complex grease was measured to be 0.43 mm and the lithium complex grease to 0.85 mm. In the 4-ball extreme pressure test, calcium sulfonate complex grease was measured as 620 kgf and the lithium complex grease was as 125 kgf. Therefore, it was confirmed that the calcium sulfonate complex grease is superior to the lithium complex grease in abrasion resistance and load-bearing property. It was found that the calcium sulfonate complex grease is more effective than the lithium complex grease in the lubrication at high temperature and high load.

  • $SiC/Si_3N_4$ composites were prepared by mixing ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ powder to $\alpha$-SiC powder in the range of 10 to 30 vol% with 10 vol% interval. 6 wt% of $Al_2O_3$ and $Y_2O_3$ were also added respectively as sintering aids. Then, pressureless sintering was performed at 1,78$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours in $N_2$ gas. In the case of adding 20 vol% of ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ powder, the relative desity to theoretical value and the flexutal strength were 92 % and 3,560 MPa, respectively. The smallest relative worn amount thereof was $2.68{\times}10^{-3}\;mm^2$ for 20 vol% ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$. The composite containing 30 vol % of ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ powder showed the highest fracture toughness $(K_{1c})$ of $4.9\;MN/m^{3/2}$, although the reduction of the wear resistance due to the effect of the pores was observed.

  • Since the oil price has been significantly jumped for several years, a heavy oil of low quality has been mainly used in the diesel engine of the merchant ship. Thus, a combustion chamber of the engine has been often exposed to severely corrosive environment more and more because temperature of the exhaust gas of the combustion chamber has been getting higher and higher with increasing of using the heavy oil of low quality. As a result, wear and corrosion of the engine parts such as exhaust valve, piston crown and cylinder head surrounded with combustion chamber are more serious compared to the other parts of the engine. Therefore, an optimum repair welding for these engine parts is very important to prolong their lifetime in a economical point of view. In this study, Inconel 625 filler metal were welded with GTAW method in the cast steel which would be generally used with piston crown material. And the corrosion properties of weld metal, heat affected and base metal zones were investigated using electrochemical methods such as measurement of corrosion potential, anodic polarization curves, cyclic voltammogram and impedance etc. in 35% $H_2SO_4$ solution. The weld metal and base metal zones exhibited the highest and lowest values of hardness respectively. Furthermore, the corrosion current density of the weld metal zone revealed the lowest value, having the highest value of hardness. The corrosive products with red color and local corrosion like as a pitting corrosion were considerably observed at the base metal zone, while these morphologies were not wholly observed in the weld metal zone. In particular, the polarization characteristics such as impedance, polarization curve and cyclic voltammogran associated with corrosion resistance property were well in good agreement with each other. Consequently, it is suggested that the mechanical and corrosion characteristics of the piston crown can be predominantly improved by repair welding method using the Inconel 625 electrode.

  • In this study, with the aim of improving the performance of shale to allow for its use as coarse aggregate for concrete, we coated shale aggregates with water repellents and polymers and evaluated their physical properties such as density, water absorption rate, wear rate, and stability depending on the coating method. In addition, the effects of the performance improvement were evaluated by assessing the properties of fresh concrete produced by varying the shale substitution ratio, as well as the compressive strength, flexural strength, and freeze-thaw resistance according to curing ages. The test results revealed that the absolute dry densities of all coated aggregates satisfied the standard density for coarse aggregates for concrete(>$2.50g/cm^3$),and the absorption rate of the shale aggregate coated with water repellent decreased by about 50% compared with that of uncoated shale. The wear rate of the polymer-coated shale decreased by up to 13.0% compared with that of uncoated shale. All coated aggregates satisfied the stability standard for coarse aggregates for concrete(${\leq}12$). The water repellent-induced performance improvement decreased the shale aggregates' slump by about 20~30mm compared with that of the uncoated shale aggregates, and the air content of the repellent-coated shale aggregate increased by up to 0.9% compared with that of the uncoated shale aggregate. The compressive strength of the polymer-coated shale aggregates at a curing age of 28 days was RS(F) 95.7% and BS(F) 90.0%, and the flexural strength was RS(F) 98.0 % and BS(F) 92.0% of the corresponding values of concretes produced using plain aggregates. Furthermore, the concrete using polymer-coated shale aggregates showed a dynamic modulus of elasticity of RS(F) 91% and BS(F) 88% after 300 freeze-thaw cycles, thus demonstrating improved freeze-thaw durability.

  • The composite electroplating is accomplished by adding inert materials during the electroplating. Permalloy is the term for Ni-Fe alloy and it is used for industrial applications due to its high magnetic permeability, surface wear resistance, corrosion protection. Microhardness for microdevices is enhanced after composite coating and it increases the life cycle. However, the hydroxyl group on the silica makes their surface susceptible to moisture and it causes the silica nanoparticles to be agglomerated in the aqueous solution. The agglomeration problem causes poor dispersion which eventually interrupts uniform deposition of silica nanoparticles. In this study, the dispersion of silica nanoparticles in the permalloy electroplated layer is reported with variation of additives and current densities. The optimum current density was 20 $mA/cm^2$ and the silica content was 9 at% at $50^{\circ}C$. The amount of silica nanopowder codeposition and surface morphologies were influenced with variation of additives. In the bath, smooth surface morphology and relatively high contents of silica nanopowder codeposition were obtained with addition of sodium lauryl sulfate.

  • The difference of composition of composite resin may affect the mechanical properties of composite resin and the environment is important for the properties of materials. The composite resin restoration is always exposed to fluid in oral cavity and the composite resin matrix is able to absorb water, which is accompanied by some swelling of the composite The uptake of water by composites has been correlated with decreases in surface hardness and wear resistance. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of water storage in $37^{\circ}C$ distilled water after 7days, 30days, 60days, 120days on compressive strength and flexural strength of dental composite resin, Z-100(group 1) Spectrum(group 2), Clearfil AP-X(group 3), Pyramid(group 4), Heliomolar(group 5). The compressive and flexural strength were measured by instron machine. The following results were obtained: 1. There were significant reduction of compressive strength as water storage time increased, 7days, 30days, 60 days, 120days(p<0.05). 2. There were significant reduction of flexural strength as water storage time increased, 7days, 30days, 60days, 120days(p<0.05). 3.
