  • In this paper, the laser weldability of thin gage steels for automobile application is discussed. Welding was carried out with a high power carbon dioxide laser system, and the laser energy was concentrated through a plano-convex lens. Test results showed that the joint gap in the butt welding proved to be one of the critical conditions for an acceptable weld. In the case where the ratio of the gap clearance to the material thickness was slightly bigger than optimal value, the weld strength was reduced showing weld metal fracture. It was possible to obtained a weld penetration ratio of 0.91 when the vertical offset ratio was controlled to be 0.4 or smaller. Results also demonstrated that the weld strength of the lap joint was influenced by travel speed. At the travel speeds lower than 37 mm/s, the weld strength indicated higher value than that of class A recommendation strength of a resistance spot weld based on the KS code. It was clear that the complicated effect of specimen alignment should be considered so as to make a sound weld with high integrity when the laser process was applied to the long weld line.

  • Direct torque control (DTC) of induction machines (IM) is a well-known strategy of these drives control which has a fast dynamic and a good tracking response. In this paper a nonlinear DTC of speed sensorless IM drives is presented which is based on input-output feedback linearization control theory. The IM model includes iron losses using a speed dependent shunt resistance which is determined through some effective experiments. A stator flux vector is estimated through a simple integrator based on stator voltage equations in the stationary frame. A novel method is introduced for DC offset compensation which is a major problem of AC machines, especially at low speeds. Rotor speed is also determined using a rotor flux sliding-mode (SM) observer which is capable of rotor flux space vector and rotor speed simultaneous estimation. In addition, stator and rotor resistances are estimated using a simple but effective recursive least squares (RLS) method combined with the so-called SM observer. The proposed control idea is experimentally implemented in real time using a FPGA board synchronized with a personal computer (PC). Simulation and experimental results are presented to show the capability and validity of the proposed control method.

  • This paper describes fully integrated low phase noise MMIC voltage controlled oscillators(VCOs). The Asymmetrical Inductance Tank VCO(AIT-VCO), which optimize the shortcoming of the previous tank's inductance optimization approach, has lower phase noise performance due to achieving higher equivalent parallel resistance and Q value of the tank. This VCO features an output power signal in the range of - 11.53 dBm and a tuning range of 261 MHz or 15.2 % of its operating frequency. This VCO exhibits a phase noise of - 117.3 dBc/Hz at a frequency offset of 100 kHz from carrier. A phase noise reduction of 15 dB was achieved relative to only one spiral inductor. The AIT-VCO achieved low very low figure of merit of -184.6 dBc/Hz. The die area, including buffers and bond pads, is $0.9{\times}0.9mm^2$.

  • Here we describe a unique self-oscillating mixer (SOM) design using a modified defected ground structure (DGS) for down-converter. Proposed SOM is consisted of self-oscillator, which can produce negative resistance and select resonance frequency, and input/output matching filter. As the advantage of this SOM can be reused by module that mix signals with transistor that is used to oscillator, it is simply and low-costly designed Also, there is easy advantage to be applied in RFIC/ MMIC technology because it offers excellent high Q value in spite of using micro-strip structure. Designed self-oscillating frequency is 1.04GHz and RF frequency established is 0.8GHz. It was achieved 20dB conversion loss and phase noise of -95dBc/Hz at 100KHz offset frequency over intermediate frequency (IF). The equivalent circuit parameters for DGS are extracted by using a three dimensional EM simulator and simple circuit analysis method.

  • For the OPR1000, a standard power plant in Korea, an analytical model of the containment building considering voids and deterioration was built with multilayer shell elements. Voids were placed in the vulnerable parts of the analysis model, and the deterioration effects of concrete and rebar were reflected in the material model. To check the impact of voids and deterioration on the seismic performance of the containment building, iterative push-over analysis was performed on four cases of the analytical model with and without voids and deterioration. It was found that the effect of voids with a volume ratio of 0.6% on the seismic performance of the containment building was insignificant. The effect of strength reduction and cross-sectional area loss of reinforcement due to deterioration and the impact of strength increase of concrete due to long-term hardening offset each other, resulting in a slight increase in the lateral resistance of the containment building. To determine the limit state that adequately represents the seismic performance of the containment building considering voids and deterioration, the Ogaki shear strength equation, ASCE 43-05 low shear wall allowable lateral displacement ratio, and JEAC 4601 shear strain limit were compared and examined with the analytically derived failure point (ultimate point) in this study.

  • In this paper, the dual-band voltage-controled oscillator (VCO) using the composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission line (TL) and the tunable negative resistance based on the fin diode is presented. It is demonstrated that the CRLH TL can lead to metamaterial transmission line with the dual-band tuning capability. The dual-band operation of the CRLH TL is achieved by the frequency offset and the phase slope of the CRLH TL, and the frequency ratio of the two operating frequencies can be a non-integer. Each frequency band of VCO has to operate independently, so we have used the tunable negative resistance based on the pin diode. When the forward bias has been into the pin diode, the phase noise of VCO is $-108.34\sim-106.67$ dBc/Hz @ 100 kHz in the tuning range, $2.423\sim2.597$ GHz, whereas when the reverse bias has been fed into the pin diode, that of VCO is $-114.16\sim-113.33$ dBc/Hz @ 100 kHz in the tuning range, $5.137\sim5.354$ GHz.

  • Al/Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$/C hybrid metal matrix composites are fabricated by the direct squeeze infiltration method. From the microstructure of Al/Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$/C composites, uniform distribution of reinforcements and good bondings are found. Optimum processing conditions for preforms and squeeze castings are suggested. Mechanical properties, such as elastic modulus, elongation, 0.2% offset yield strength and ultimate tensile strength are obtained. Through the abrasive were test and wear surface analsis, wear behavior and its mechanism of AC2B aluminum and Al/Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$/C composites can be characterized under various sliding speed conditions. Tensile strenght elongation of Al/Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$/C composites are decreased with increasing the addition of carbon fiber. On the contrary, elastic modulus of Al/Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$/C composites is slightly improved compared with that of the unreinforced matrix alloy. The addition of carbon fiber to al/al$_{2}$O$_{3}$/C composites gives rise to improvement of the wear resistance. Specially, carbon chopped fibers play an important role in interfering sticking between the counter material and metal matirix composites. Al/Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$/C composites are suitable to high speed due to solid lubication of carbon. And wear model of Al/Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$/C composites is suggested by the examination of worn surfaces.

  • Minimizing the cylinder wear and the consumption rate of cylinder oil in a large two-stroke marine diesel engine is of great economic importance. In Korea, authors first developed a motor-driven cylinder lubricator for a Wartsila Switzerland large two-stroke diesel engine. The characteristic of the developed product is that can control automatically the oil feed rate with a load fluctuation by the motor drive and the offset cam. For manufacturing the reliable and useful products, however, it is necessary to investigate further characteristics and to improve performances as a cylinder lubricator. In this study, the effects of pump motor speed, plunger stroke and cylinder back pressure on oil feed rate, maximum discharge and delivery pressures are experimentally investigated by using the electronically controlled quill injection system and distributer in the developed cylinder lubricator. It is found that the oil feed rates of electronic control and mechanical type quills with the in-cylinder back pressure are differently characterized by the role of accumulator, the viscous resistance of contact area, etc. It can be also shown that the maximum discharge pressure of the electronic control quill is lower than the mechanical type one but the maximum discharge pressure difference of two types decreased as plunger stroke is small, and the maximum delivery pressures of two types increased as plunger stroke, motor speed and back pressure are elevated but the maximum delivery pressure of mechanical type is higher than the one of electronic control type.

  • Hydrogen production via high high-temperature steam electrolysis consumes less electrical energy than compared to conventional low low-temperature water electrolysis, mainly due to the improved thermodynamics and kinetics at elevated temperaturetemperatures. The elementalElemental powders of Cu, Ni, and YSZ are were used to synthesize high high-temperature electrolysis cathodecathodes, of Ni/YSZ and Cu/YSZ composites, by mechanical alloying. The metallic particles of the composites were uniformly covered with finer YSZ particles. Sub-micron sized pores are were homogeneously dispersed in the Ni/YSZ and Cu/YSZ composites. In this study, The cathode materials were synthesized and their Characterizations properties were evaluated in this study: It was found that the better electric conductivity of the Cu/YSZ composite was measured improved compared tothan that of the Ni/YSZ composite. Slight A slight increase in the resistance can be produced for in a Cu/YSZ cathode by oxidation, but it this is compensated offset for by a favorable thermal expansion coefficient. Therefore, Cu/YSZ cermet can be adequately used as a suitable cathode material of in high high-temperature electrolysis.

  • Cortical support is an important factor, as the engagement of the fixture in strong compact bone offers an increased load-carrying capacity and initial stability. Because of the poor bone quality in the posterior mandible and other anatomic considerations, it has been suggested that implant fixtures be placed in these locations with apical engagement of the lingual cortical plate for so-called bicortication. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of cortical engagements and in addition polyoxymethylene(POM) intramobile connector(IMC) of IMZ implant on implant load transfer in edentulous posterior segment of mandible, using three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis models composed of cortical and trabecular bone involving single implant. Variables such as (1) the crestal peri-implant defect, (2) the apical engagement of lingual cortical plate, (3) the occlusal contact position (a vertical load at central fossa or buccal cusp tip), and (4) POM IMC were investigated. Stress patterns were compared and interfacial stresses along the bone-implant interface were monitored specially. Within the scope of this study, the following observations were made. 1) Offset load and angulation of fixture led to increase the local interfacial stresses. 2) Stresses were concentrated toward the cortical bones, but the crestal peri-implant defect increased the interfacial stresses in trabecular bone. 3) For the model with bicortication, it was noticed that the crestal cortical bone provided more resistance to the bending moment and the lingual cortical plate provided more support for the vertical load. But Angulation problem of the fixture from the lingual cortical engagement caused the local interfacial stress concentrations. 4) It was not clear that POM IMC had the effect on stress distribution under the present experimental conditions, especially for the cases of crestal peri-implant defect.
