  • Halogen gases such as $BCl_3$ and $CF_4$ are among the most problematic gases used in semiconductor process. They raise serious environmental and health problems due to their extreme toxicity. This study is to develop a method to effectively remove those gases during the process by using various types of inorganic gas adsorption agents such as zeolite A, modified AgA zeolite, ZnO, and $AgMnO_3$, which have not been attempted in the conventional methods. The removal efficiencies of the gases were both qualitatively and quantitatively measured by a FT-IR spectrophotometer. The whole device for the measurement has been designed and built in our lab. The removal efficiencies of the gases were compared between those used resins. The experimental result revealed that ZnO showed the best removal efficiency for BCl3 gas that had removed 0.094 g per 1 g of the resin used. For $CF_4$ gas, none of the solid resins was able to remove the gas effectively. However, liquid $CHCl_3$ showed some removal ability of the $CF_4$ gas.

  • This study examined the condition of degraded plastic artifacts and conducted materials assessments for conservation treatment. The properties and bond characteristics of five types of adhesives(EVA, PVAc, Cyanoacrylate) were evaluated to select the adhesive most suitable for conservation treatment. The degradation of plastic artifacts caused cracks, peelings, and surface warping. According to the FT-IR analysis, the synthetic resin used in the artifact was estimated to EVA type. The properties of the adhesives were evaluated through acidity, and hardness measurements. The results showed that acidity varies with the type of adhesive, and that the hardness of PVAc was higher than those of EVA. On comparing the bond characteristics of the samples after artificial degradation, it was found that PVAc and Cyanoacrylate increased the chromaticity and hardness of the samples, while EVA was the most stable with relatively little change. Thus, EVA was confirmed to be the most suitable materials for conservation treatment of degraded plastic artifacts. In this study, as the experiment of treatment materials based on actual artifact, it is expected that it could be used a basis research for conservation treatment of plastic artifacts.

  • This study aimed to examine the characteristics of paint used for modern art works by conducting sectional observations, inorganic component analysis, and infrared spectroscopic analysis on the painted layers of 3 painted sculpture works exhibited in the Yongdam Dam Environmental Sculpture Park and Naejangsan Sculpture Park in the Jeollabuk-do area. The observations indicate that the cross section is composed of various layers of 2-3 folds, the thickness of the layers was uneven at approximately 23-150 ㎛, and putty was used for plate treatment prior to painting. Inorganic component analysis results show that putty containing calcium carbonate, iron oxide, diatomite, and titanium dioxide was used for the putty layer. It is also assumed that paint mixed with green (Cr2O3), blue(sodaliteblue), red(chromered), andwhite(TiO2) colors were used for the painted layers. As a result of infrared spectroscopic analysis to confirm the types of paint, it is estimated that the paint was mixed with polyester resin and an extender.

  • Statement of problem. More than 70% of patients who need the implant supported restoration are parially edentulous. The principles of design for implant supported fixed partial denture in mandibular posterior region are many and varied. Jurisdiction for their use is usually based on clinical evaluation. There are several areas or interest regarding the design of implant supported fixed partial denture in mandibular posterior region. 1) Straight and tripod configuration in implant placement, 2) Two restoration types such as individualized and splinted restorations. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to compare the amount and distribution of stress around the implant fixtures placed in the mandibular posterior region with two different arrangements and to evaluate the effects of splinting using the photoelastic stress analysis. Material & methods. 1) Production of study model: Mandibular partially edentulous model was waxed-up and duplicated with silicone and two models were poured in stone. 2) Fixture installation and photoelastic model construction: Using surveyor(Ney, USh), 3 fixtures(two 4.0 $\times$13 mm, one 5.0$\times$10 mm, Lifecore, USA) were insta)led in straight & tripod configurations. Silicone molds were made and poured in photoelastic resin (PL-2. Measurements group, USA). 3) Prostheses construction: Four 3-unit bridges (Type III gold alloy, Dongmyung co., Korea) were produced with nonhexed and hexed UCLA abutments and fitted with conventional methods. The abutments were tightened with 30 Ncm torque and the static loads were applied at 12 points of the occlusal surface. 4) Photoelastic stress analysis : The polarizer analyzer system with digital camera(S-2 Pro, Fujifilm, Japan) was used to take the photoelastic fringes and analysed using computer analysis program. Results. Solitary hexed UCLA restoration developed different stress patterns between two implant arrangement configurations, but there were no stress transfer to adjacent implants from the loaded implant in both configurations. However splinted restorations showed lesser amount of stresses in the loaded implants and showed stress transfer to adjacent implants in both configurations. Solitary hexed UCLA restoration with tripod configuration developed higher stresses in anterior and middle implants under loading than implants with straight configurations. Splintied 3 unit fixed partial dentures with tripod configuration showed higher stress development in posterior implant under loading but there were no obvious differences between two configurations. Conclusions. The tripod configuration of implant arrangement didn't show any advantages over the straight configuration. Splinting of 3 unit bridges with nonhexed UCLA abutments showed less stress development around the fixtures. Solitary hexed UCLA restoration developed tilting of implant fixture under offset loads.

  • The measured radioactivity of gamma-emitting radionuclides in each radioactive waste drum using the non-destructive waste assay method is underestimated than real radioactivity in radioactive waste drum because the gamma-rays are attenuated within the medium. Therefore, the measured radioactivity should be corrected for the attenuation of gamma-rays. For the correction of the attenuation of gamma-rays, the attenuation correction method should be applied differently by considering the distribution and density of medium in radioactive wastes drum generated from nuclear power plants. In this study, the model drums were fabricated for simulating five types of radioactive waste drums generated from nuclear power plant and the optimum methods of the attenuation correction were experimentally determined to analyze the activity of radionuclides in the waste drum accurately using the segmented gamma scanning system. With the determination of the attenuation correction methods from the experimental results the transmission method and the average density method for the miscellaneous waste drum, the transmission method and the differential peak absorption method for the shielded miscellaneous waste drum were used to measure the density of medium in waste drums. Also, the average density method and the differential peak absorption method for the spent resin drum, the paraffin solidified drum, and the spent filter drum were used.

  • A passively fitting prosthesis is an essential prerequisite to attain long-lasting success and maintenance of osseointegration. However, true "passive fit" can not be achieved with the present implant-supported prosthesis fabrication protocol. Many clinical situations are suitably treated with cantilevered implant-supported fixed restorations. The purpose of this study was to compare the stress distribution pattern and magnitude in supporting tissues around ITI implants with cantilevered, implant-supported, screw-retained fixed prosthesis according to the fitness of superstructures. Photoelastic model was made with PL-2 resin (Measurements, Raleigh, USA) and three ITI implants (${\phi}4.1{\times}10mm$) were placed in the mandibular posterior edentulous area distal to the canine. Anterior and posterior extended 4-unit cantilevered FPDs were made with different misfit in the superstructures. 4 types of prosthesis were made by placing a $100{\mu}m$ gap between the abutment and the crown on the second premolar and/or the first molar. Photoelastic stress analysis were carried out to measure the fringe order around the implant supporting structure under simulated loading conditions (30 lb).

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the amount of transportation of original canal, zip formation, permanent deformation and fracture of instruments after canal enlargement. In this study, the 60 resin blocks that have curved canals were randomly divided into 3 experimental groups with 20 teeth each according to instrument types and filling methods for canal enlargement. The curved canals of each experimental groups were enlarged to No 40 ISO size with the K-flexo stainless steel file (Group 1), Engine-driven Ni-Ti Profile new series(Group 2) and Engine-driven Ni-Ti Quantec 2000 series(Group 3) according to the manufacturer's recommendation. Pre- and postoperative X-rays were taken at same position and the films were scanned and the canal images were traced to determine the canal curvature according to the method of Schneider. The amount of reduction in canal curvature were calculated between pre- and postoperative X-rays. In addition to zip formation, permanent deformation and fracture of instruments were examined after canal enlargement. The results were as follows : 1. All experimental groups showed some loss of canal curvature after instrumentation. There was a significant change in curvature between before and after instrumentation in each group(p<0.001). 2. Engine-driven Ni-Ti instrumentations resulted in an average loss of curvature of 2.36 degrees for Profile new series, 3.43 degrees for Quantec series, and hand instrumentation showed an average loss of curvature of 6.48 degrees for K-flexo file. There was a statistical significant difference between hand instrumentation and engine-driven Ni-Ti instrumentations(p<0.05). But there was no statistical difference between Profile new series and Quantec series. 3. There were many apical zip formations in group 1(Hand instrumentation). But there were no apical zip formations in group 2,3(Engine-driven Ni-Ti instrumentation). 4. The instrument deformation occured 9 cases in group 1(K-flexo file), 2 cases in group 2(Profile new series) and 3 cases in group 3(Quantec) after instrumentation. And the instrument fracture occured 1 case in each group. The results showed that the engine-driven Ni-Ti instruments, if we use carefully according to manufacturer's recommendations, can be use effectively for instrumenting the curved root canals in case of the MAF was over size 40.

  • Effect of thermal aging on the weight loss and water absorption of epoxy adhesives was investigated in the presence of three types of different hardeners, such as D-230, G-5022, and HN-2200. Thermal and mechanical properties of the cured epoxy resins were also studied througth the glass transition temperature and shear adhesion strength measurements. Weight losses of DGEBA/D-230 and DGEBA/HN- 2200 systems were not varied. However, the weight of DGEBA/G-5022 system was significantly decreased with increasing the thermal aging time. The water absorption of the specimens was increased as the thermal aging time increased except that using G-5022. DEGBA/HN-2200 system showed higher $T_g$ value than those of other systems, due to the formation of the fine three-dimensional network structure containing aliphatic ring. Shear adhesion strength of all systems was increased with increasing the thermal aging tine, which is attributed to increased degree of cure and fine three-dimensional network structure formation. And $T_g$ values and shear adhesion strength of all specimens exposed to water was decreased as the immersion time increased.

  • The hammer-milled characteristics of waste wood materials such as lumber, plywood, particleboard(PB), MDF and railroad tic were investigated in this study. The physical and mechanical properties of recycled boards according to types of recycled particle and the mixing ratios were also studied. The hammer-milled, waste wood materials had the dimensional distributions suitable for the core layer panicle. Bending strengths of recycled boards (one layer) were shown in order of plywood, PB(laboratory-fabricated with particles used in the PB factory), lumber, tego film-overlaid plywood, MDF, waste railroad tie, PB(factory-made) and LPL-overlaid PB. Cured resin and creosote containing waste wood contributed to dimensional stability of reconstituted boards. Considering the mixing effects between lumber and plywood with recycled PB particle, lumber particle was contributive to bending strength, MOE and internal bond(IB) strength, whereas plywood particle was contributive to dimensional stability. The bending and IB strength of 3 layer boards composing only recycled waste wood particles in core layer of board were in order of lumber, plywood, PB and MDF. On the other hand, the thickness swelling was in order of PB, lumber, plywood and MDF. Bending strength of the 3 layer boards mixed with recycled PB-particle in the core layer had a decreasing tendency, as the mixing ratios of recycled PB-particles increased. The dimensional stability of 3 layer recycled board was improved as the mixing ratio of recycled PB-particle increased same as in one layer. Formaldehyde emission of boards fabricated with recycled PB-particles in the core layer of the PB was in the range of E2 grade (below 5.0mg/l).

  • Dentinogenesis imperfecta is an inheritable disease of dentinal defect, generally is inherited as a single autosomal dominant trait. It has a prevalence of 1 in 8000 with the trait, and no significant difference between male and female, with involvement of the primary and permanent teeth. Shields proposed three types of Dentinogenesis imperfecta. Affected teeth have various discoloration, separation of enamel rapid destruction of underlying dentin, and severe attrition. Radiographically, the teeth have cervical constriction, bulbous crown, thin root, obliteration of the root canals and pulp chambers, and periapical lesions in a sound tooth. The objective of treatment is rehabilitation of the esthetics, the masticatory function, and the vertical dimension of occlusion. In these cases, two pediatric patients reported to the Kyungpook University Pediatric clinic, with a chief complaint of discolored teeth and severe attrition. As a result of clinical and radiographic exam, it was diagnosed as Dentinogenesis imperfecta. The posterior teeth were restored with Stainless Steel Crown, and the anterior teeth were restored with composite resin veneering.
