  • The auther measured exothermic tempreature of the 5 kinds of direct resins during polymerization. Direct resins were mixed into the rubber cup(550-600㎣ in volume) with grass rod at room temperature (23.6℃) for 30 seconds and thermometer was placed approximately at the geometric center of the resin mass in the rubber cup. Polymer-monomer ratio was determined by instruction of the packages. The results were as follows. 1) The heat generated during polymerization was under 47.3℃. 2) The time at which the highest temperature is reached during polymerization was within 20.5 minutes. 3) Slow curing resins produced lower heat than quick curing resins and quick curing resins presented higher temperature than slow curing resins. 4) The highest temperature was sustained momentarily.

  • Alkali-soluble random copolymer (ASR) was used as a functional resin in the emulsion polymerization of styrene to prepare structured nanoparticles. The calorimetric technique was applied to study the kinetics of emulsion polymerization of styrene using ASR and conventional ionic emulsifier, sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS). ASR could form aggregates like micelles and the solubilization ability of the aggregates was dependent on the neutralization degree of ASR. The rate of polymerization in ASR system was lower than that in SDBS system. This result can be explained by the creation of a hairy ASR layer around the particle surface, which decreases the diffusion rate of free radicals through this region. Although a decrease in particle size was observed, the rate of polymerization decreased with increasing ASR concentration. The higher the concentration of ASR is, the thicker and denser ASR layer may be, and the more difficult it would therefore be for radicals to reach the particle through this layer of ASR. The rate of polymerization decreased with increasing the neutralization degree of ASR. The aggregates with high neutralization of ASR are less efficient in solubilizing the monomer and capturing initiator radicals than that of the lower neutralization degree, which leads to decrease in rate of polymerization.

  • It is well known that the characteristics of liquid crystal polymer composite(LCPC) films are possessed of large-area and flexible display, polarizer free, high contrast, wide angle of visual filed and high responsiveness. In this study, we have investigated to the best optimal mixing rates chiral nematic liquid crystals and UV-curable resins having different properties acrylate moleculars. The purpose of this study has been the development of new functional application with liquid crystal polymer composite films. For example the films were applied a new thermal sensor. In results, best phase separation behaviors turned out liquid crystal/monomer/oilgomer mixture system.

  • Bisphenol A(BPA) is a monomer widely used in the manufacturing polycarbonate plastic or epoxy resin and Mancozeb (MCZ), a polymeric complex of zinc and manganese salts of ethylene bisthiocarbamate, is widely used in agriculture as fungicide, insecticide and herbcide. These chemicals have been recently known as endocrine disruptors. To investigate the effects of BPA and MCZ on LPS-induced cytokine production (TNF-${\alpha}$) in vivo, female ICR mice were administered to various concentration of these materials (BPA; 100, 500, 1000 mg/kg/day, and MCZ; 250, 500, 1000, 1500 mg/kg/day) for 30 days and serum cytokine levels were measured at 1h post LPS injection (day 32) in BPA- or MCZ-administered mice. • In this study, Mangifera Indica tree sawdust reinforced bisphenol-A aniline based benzoxazine composites were prepared by varying the sawdust from 20 wt% to 45 wt%. Thermogravimetric analysis of composites revealed excellent compatibility between polybenzoxazine and sawdust from the remarkable growth in char yield from 22% (neat resin) to 36% (for highly filled) and glass transition temperature from 151 to 165℃. Ultimate weight loss of the composites evaluated from the Derivatives of TG plots. Limiting oxygen index values of the composites reported considerable growth i.e.,from 28 to 32 along with the increase in filler content. Differential scanning calorimetry results showed that sawdust particles have an insignificant effect on curing temperature (219℃) for the raise in sawdust content. Structure of the sawdust, benzoxazine monomer, polybenzoxazine and composites were studied using Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy. Overall, polybenzoxazine composites with sawdust as filler showed improved thermal properties when compared with pure polybenzoxazine.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to compare HEMA and TEGDMA as diluents for the composite resin. Material and methods : Eight kinds of experimental light curable composite resins were prepared and used. Concentrations of monomer and filler were same for all experimental composites, except, the diluent's ratios to the monomer. The ratio of diluents to Bis-GMA were 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30%, and two kinds of diluents were used, so total experimental groups were eight including one control group of 25% TEGDMA. Results : Depth of cure, flexural strength, shear bond strength to bovine enamel, shear bond strength to bovine dentin, water absorption and solubility of composites in water were measured. Sample size for each groups were 10. Arithmetic means were used as each groups representative values, and regression test for two diluents and low concentrations, Duncan's multiple range test, and Two-way ANOVA test were done for kinds of diluents and its concentrations at level of 0.05. Conclusion : Following results were obtained ; 1. There were not significant differences in effects of HEMA and TEGDMA to depth of cure, flexural strength of composites and shear bond strength to bovine enamel (p>0.05). 2. Increase of the concentrations of the diluents made the depth of cure (p<0.001) and flexural strength (p<0.05) a little higher. 3. Shear bond strength to dentin was higher on HEMA containing composites than TEGDMA containing composites (p<0.001). 4. Water absorption was higher on HEMA containing composites than TEGDMA containing composites (p<0.01).

  • Poly(urethane-methyl methacrylate) hybrid emulsions can be controlled with their thermal, mechanical and anti-chemical properties as plastic coating materials. In this study, water dispersed poly(urethane-methyl methacrylate) hybrid emulsions were prepared by prepolymer synthesis and soap free emulsion polymerization. For imparting hydrophilicity on polyurethane prepolymer, 2,2-bis (hydroxymethyl) propionic acid was added to the polyurethane prepolymer with methyl methacrylate monomer and was neutralizated by triethylamine (TEA). After neutralization, the prepolymer mixture was dispersed in the water phase with stable droplets. The synthesis was carried out with chain extension from the ethylene diamine and initiation of methyl methacrylate by soap free emulsion polymerization. Stable poly(urethane-methyl methacrylate) hybrid emulsion was successfully obtained with different synthetic conditions and acrylic monomer contents. Poly(urethane-methyl methacrylate) hybrid emulsion were characterized and compared with tensile strength, viscosity, and adhesion properties.
