PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of atmospheric plasma (APL) versus conventional surface treatments on the adhesion of self-adhesive resin cement to Ti-6Al-4V alloy. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Sixty plates of machined titanium (Ti) discs were divided into five groups (n=12): 1) Untreated (CNT); 2) Sandblasted (SAB); 3) Tribochemically treated (ROC); 4) Tungsten CarbideBur (TCB); 5) APL treated (APL). SEM analysis and surface roughness (Ra) measurements were performed. Self-adhesive resin cement was bonded to the Ti surfaces and shear bond strength (SBS) tests, Ra and failure mode examinations were carried out. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance and chi-squared test. RESULTS. The lowest SBS value was obtained with CNT and was significantly different from all other groups except for APL. The ROC showed the highest SBS and Ra values of all the groups. CONCLUSION. It was concluded that the effect of APL on SBS and Ra was not sufficient and it may not be a potential for promoting adhesion to titanium.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of two metal adhesive primers on the shear bond strengths of self-curing resin to Ni-Cr a]toy and the effects of 1000 thermal cycling on the durability of the bond. The two selected metal adhesive primers were Metal Primer II(G-C corp., Japan) and MR Bond(Tokuyama corp., Japan) and no treatment groups were used as control. All specimens were divided into two groups according to thermal cycling. In the group without thermal cycling, the specimens were stored in water for 24 hours. In the group with thermal cycling, the specimens were thermocycled 1000 times at temperature of $5^{\circ}C\;and\;55^{\circ}C$. Shear bond strengths were measured using the Universal testing machine(Zwick 145641, Germany) with a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. The results were as follows: 1. MR Bond significantly improved the shear bond strength of resin to Ni-Cr alloy before and after thermal cycling. 2. There were no difference in the shear bond strength of resin to Ni-Cr alloy between Metal Primer II treated group and no treatment group. 3. Regardless of the type and the use of adhesive primers, there were tendency of decrease in shear bond strength with 1000 thermal cycling.
Four urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins were synthesized as a particleboard (PB) binder with the four different initial formaldehyde/urea mole ratio and the final mole ratio of 1.15. The UF resins were characterized according to the standard method of resin adhesive analysis. PBs were manufactured using liquid UF resins at 5 minutes press time and 6% resin solids levels on an ovendry particle weight basis. A total of 20 PBs was fabricated for 5 panel replication per UF resin types. The panels were tested for physical strength properties per the procedure ASTM D 1037. The formaldehyde emission levels from the PBs bonded with the UF resins were tested according to 2-hour desiccator test method ASTM D 5582. There were no significant differences among UF resin types for internal bond strength of PBs. But there were significant differences among UF resin types for formaldehyde emission level of PBs. The results showed that the formaldehyde emission level was influenced by the UF resin types without reducing the adhesive performance.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets depending on the variety of adhesives and whether saliva exists, by using self-etching primer (SEP). Groups were divided according to the type of adhesive into resin adhesive (Trans bond XT) and resin-modified glass ionomer cement (Fuji Ortho LC). One group of resin adhesive used XT primer after etching with 37% phosphoric acid, and the other group used self-etching primer. One group of resin-modified glass ionomer cement only used etching for bonding, and the other group used SEP. Each of the groups were also classified by whether saliva was contaminated or not. and then the shear bond strength was measured. The results showed that when using resin adhesive, the shear bond strength of SEP was lower than the XT primer. In the resin-modified glass ionomer cement groups, the shear bond strength which depends on the priming method, did not have a meaningful difference statistically When saliva was contaminated, the group which used SEP, regardless of the adhesive variety, had a greater shear bond strength than the normal priming group. From these results, SEP showed a shear bond strength that is possible to be used clinically, regardless of the adhesive variety. It can especially be clinically useful to use SEP to bond brackets even on tooth surfaces contaminated with saliva, because it offers the appropriate bonding strength as well as shorter treatment time and easy application.
Objectives: This study evaluated the influence of a multi-mode universal adhesive (MUA) containing silane (Single Bond Universal, 3M EPSE) on the bonding of resin cement to lithium disilicate. Materials and Methods: Thirty IPS e.max CAD specimens (Ivoclar Vivadent) were fabricated. The surfaces were treated as follows: Group A, adhesive that did not contain silane (ANS, Porcelain Bonding Resin, Bisco); Group B, silane (S) and ANS; Group C, hydrofluoric acid (HF), S, and ANS; Group D, MUA; Group E, HF and MUA. Dual-cure resin cement (NX3, Kerr) was applied and composite resin cylinders of 0.8 mm in diameter were placed on it before light polymerization. Bonded specimens were stored in water for 24 hours or underwent a 10,000 thermocycling process prior to microshear bond strength testing. The data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance (p < 0.05). Results: Bond strength varied significantly among the groups (p < 0.05), except for Groups A and D. Group C showed the highest initial bond strength ($27.1{\pm}6.9MPa$), followed by Group E, Group B, Group D, and Group A. Thermocycling significantly reduced bond strength in Groups B, C, and E (p < 0.05). Bond strength in Group C was the highest regardless of the storage conditions (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Surface treatment of lithium disilicate using HF and silane increased the bond strength of resin cement. However, after thermocycling, the silane in MUA did not help achieve durable bond strength between lithium disilicate and resin cement, even when HF was applied.
The purposes of this study were to evaluate and compare the frequency of ceramic bracket fracture, frequency of enamel fracture, bond fracture site, adhesive remnant index after mechanical and electrothermal debracketing, to evaluate effectiveness of high and low speed rotary instrument and ultrasonic instrument during residual adhesive remnants removal, and to measure resin film surface(percentage) using by image analyser(Leco 300). Bond fracture site, bracket fracture, and enamel surface damage were examined by scanning electron microscope. The following results were obained : 1. In the mechanical debracketing group, the bond failed predominantly at enamel-adhesive interface with the bulk of adhesive remaining on bracket base. 2. In the eletrothermal debracketing group, the bond failed predominantly at adhesive-bracket interface with the bulk of adhesive remaining on enamel surface. 3. The most effectiveness of residual resin removal was obtained by means of the resin polishing bur and the order of scratch formation was the procedure using tungsten carbide bur, ultrasonic scaler, sof-lex disc, and polishing bur. 4. The order of the resin film surface percentage was ultrasonic scaler, tungsten carbide bur, sof-lex disc, and resin polishing bur.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the compatibility of universal adhesives with two dual-cured resin cements. Eighty human molars were divided into eight groups. Tooth was embedded in self-curing acrylic resin and sectioned horizontally to exposure dentine surface. After polishing with 600-grit SiC paper, adhesives were applied. All-Bond Universal (Bisco), G-premio bond (GC), Scotch-bond universal (3M ESPE), Scotch-bond Multipurpose (3M ESPE) were used in this study. Calibra (Dentsply) as a conventional dual-curing resin cement and RelyX Ultimate (3M ESPE) as an amine free resin cement were used. The adhesives and the cements were applied according to the manufacturer's instructions. Final specimens were cylinder (diameter 2mm, height 3mm) shape. After storing in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 7 days the shear bond strength (SBS) test was performed. There was no significant difference in shear bond strength between the adhesives when RelyX Ultimate was used (p>0.05). However, when Calibra used with Scotch-bond Multipurpose and All-Bond Universal were used, statistically higher SBS was observed, as compared to the groups which Calibra cements with G-premio bond and Scotch-bond universal adhesive (p<0.05) were used. Within the limitations of this study, RelyX Ultimate resin cement was compatible with universal adhesives of various pH. All-Bond Universal adhesive was compatible with a resin cement containing the tertiary amine.

Objective To evaluate the influence of water storage on the mechanical properties of dental adhesives over 1 and 3 months. Materials and Methods Adhesive resin sheets were prepared by pouring either All-bond 2(AB), Clearfil SE Bond(SE) into a mold measuring $15{\times}15{\times}0.9mm$. After solvent in primer evaporation, the adhesives were light-cured and removed from the mold and divided in two pieces, trimmed to hourglass shape that were used to determine the micro-tensile strength(MTS). Another hourglass shaped metal mold measuring $2.0{\times}1.5mm$ in cross-section area was made to determine the Young's modulus(E). Adhesive specimens for Young's modulus(E) were prepared in the same method. Specimens were stored at $37^{\circ}C$ in distilled water and tested after 1 and 3 months. The data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test. Results Water storage significantly decreased the micro-tensile strength(MTS) of AB and SE specimens after 1 and 3 months(P<0.05). The Young's modulus(E) were also decreased after water storage for 1 and 3 months, but statistically not significant in each group of AB and SE group respectively. Conclusions Long-term exposure of adhesive resin to water can cause reduction of mechanical properties. It may compromise resin/dentin bonds and affect longevity of restorations.

To manufacture laminated wood with improved mechanical properties by providing uniform adhesiveness, the adhesive was applied and the plate adhesive was laminated on the wood surface. Then, after laminating the wood on the top part of the adhesivebond, it was heated and dried while the adhesive was stiffened using microwaves, and the test piece was manufactured by compressing it with the press machine for thirty minutes. The temperature and the water content were examined according to the heating time of the wood heated with the microwave, and testing was conducted on the shear strength and flexural strength of the wood. In addition, the microstructure of the adhesive bond between the wood was recorded to confirm the penetrabilityinto the wood structure for the adhesive. After the test was conducted, it was found that the test piece manufactured with wood that has its water content leveled with the microwave heating showed improved shear strength and bending strength compared to the standard test piece. With regard to adhesives, liquefied polyvinyl acetate resin and plate's PVB resin were found to have superior adhesive strength. Also, after filming the cellular microstructure, it was found that when the laminated wood is heated with microwaves, the infiltration of the adhesive into the inside of the wood becomes easy, which makes it effective for improving adhesiveness.
A low density polyethylene(LDPE) was examined as an additive in phenol-formaldehyde(PF) resin adhesive for bonding radiata pine plywood. The LDPE was supplied by the commercial manufacturer. The LDPE was compared to a commercial filler commonly used in structural plywood adhesives in the United States. The adhesive mixes were made by following the recommended procedure of Georgia-Pacific Resins Inc.. using plywood-type PF resin. A total of 48 three-ply plywoods. 6.3 mm nominal thickness and 30 by 30 em in size, were made at two press times (4 and 5 min). two press temperatures (150 and $160^{\circ}C$) and 30 minute assembly times for four adhesive mixing types. Evaluations of the LDPE addition were carried out by performance tension shear tests after two cycle boil aging tests on plywood per the U.S. Product Standard PS I-83. After accelerated-aging tests. plywoods were exhibited no delamination. The test results included tension shear strength and estimated wood failure values. The plywood test results support the use of polyethylene as an additive in plywood adhesives.
