In order to accumulate data to lower the friction coefficient of a press mold, tribological tests were performed before and after coating SM45C with a PVC/PO film and plasma coating (CrN, concept). The ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM)-treated material had a nano-size surface texture, high surface hardness, and large and deep compressive residual stress formation. Even when the load was doubled, the small amount of abrasion, small weight of the abrasion, and width and depth of the abrasion did not increase as much as those of untreated materials. A comparison of the weight change before and after the tribological test with the CrN and the concept coating material and that of the untreated material showed that the wear loss of the concept coating material and P-UNSM treated material (that is, the UNSM treated material treated with the concept coating) showed a tendency to decrease by approximately 55-75%. Concept 100N had a lower friction coefficient of about 0.6, and P-UNSM-30-100N showed almost the same curve as concept 100N and had a low coefficient of friction of about 0.6. The concept multilayer coating had a thickness of $5.32{\mu}m$. In the beginning, the coefficient of friction decreased because of the plasma coating, but it started to increase from about 250-300 s. After about 350 s, the coefficient of friction tended to approach the friction coefficient of the SM45C base metal. The SGV-280F film-attached test specimen was slightly pushed back and forth, but the SM45C base material was not exposed due to abrasion. The friction coefficient was 0.22, which was the lowest, and the tribological property was the best in this study.
Reactive powder concrete (RPC) is a type of ultra-high strength concrete that has a relatively high brittleness. However, its ductility can be improved by confinement, and the use of RPC in composite RPC filled steel tube columns has become an important subject of research in recent years. This paper aims to present an experimental study of axial capacity calculation of RPC filled circular steel tube columns. Twenty short columns under axial compression were tested and information on their failure patterns, deformation performance, confinement mechanism and load capacity were presented. The effects of load conditions, diameter-thickness ratio and compressive strength of RPC on the axial behavior were further discussed. The experimental results show that: (1) specimens display drum-shaped failure or shear failure respectively with different confinement coefficients, and the load capacity of most specimens increases after the peak load; (2) the steel tube only provides lateral confinement in the elastic-plastic stage for fully loaded specimens, while the confinement effect from steel tube initials at the set of loading for partially loaded specimens; (3) confinement increases the load capacity of specimens by 3% to 38%, and this increase is more pronounced as the confinement coefficient becomes larger; (4) the residual capacity-to-ultimate capacity ratio is larger than 0.75 for test specimens, thus identifying the composite columns have good ductility. The working mechanism and force model of the composite columns were analyzed, and based on the twin-shear unified strength theory, calculation methods of axial capacity for columns with two load conditions were established.

Background: The mental V-Y advancement flap method is useful for reconstruction of lower lip defect because of its many advantages. However, it is not easy to select the optimal reconstructive method for the vermilion defect that remains after application of the mental V-Y advancement flap. In choosing the representative surgical method for vermilion mucosal reconstruction including mucosal V-Y advancement flap, buccal mucosal flap, and buccal mucosal graft. We describe an efficient technique to large lower lip defects combining mental V-Y advancement flap and buccal mucosal graft Methods: This study included 16 patients who underwent reconstructive surgery for full-thickness and large defect (> half the entire width) of the lower lip from October 2006 to September 2017. The operation was conducted using mental V-Y advancement flap with various vermilion mucosal reconstruction methods considering the location of the defect and the amount of residual tissue of the lip coloboma after excision. Results: All patients underwent mental V-Y advancement flap. In vermilion mucosal reconstruction, five patients underwent mucosal V-Y advancement flap, three underwent buccal mucosal flap, and eight underwent buccal mucosal graft. There were good aesthetic and functional results in all patients who underwent buccal mucosal graft. However, two patients who underwent mucosal V-Y advancement flap complained of oral incompetence, and all patients who underwent buccal mucosal flap had oral commissure deformity. Conclusion: Buccal mucosal graft combined with mental V-Y advancement flap can produce suitable functional and aesthetic outcomes in near total lower lip reconstruction in patient with large mucosal defect including vermilion portion.
This research focused on analyzing the post-fire behavior of high-performance concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns, with the concrete containing tire rubber and steel fibers, under axial compressive loading. The finite element (FE) modeling of such heated columns containing recycled aggregate is a branch of this field which has not received the proper attention of researchers. Better understanding the post-fire behavior of these columns by measuring their residual strength and deformation is critical for achieving the minimum repair level required for structures damaged in the fire. Therefore, to develop this model, 19 groups of confined and unconfined specimens with the variables including the volume ratio of steel fibers, tire rubber content, diameter-to-thickness (D/t) ratio of the steel tube, and exposure temperature were considered. The ABAQUS software was employed to model the tested specimens so that the accurate behavior of the FE-modeled specimens could be examined under test conditions. To achieve desirable results for the modeling of the specimens, in addition to the novel procedure described in this research, the modified versions of models presented by previous researchers were also utilized. After the completion of modeling, the load-axial strain and load-lateral strain relationships, ultimate strength, and failure mode of the modeled CFST specimens were evaluated against the test data, through which the satisfactory accuracy of this modeling procedure was established. Afterward, using a parametric study, the effect of factors such as the concrete core strength at different temperatures and the D/t ratio on the behavior of the CFST columns was explored. Finally, the compressive strength values obtained from the FE model were compared with the corresponding values predicted by various codes, the results of which indicated that most codes were conservative in terms of these predictions.
Post-earthquake fire is a common disaster which causes serious safety issues to infrastructures. This study aims to investigate the residual loading capacities of circular concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns under post-earthquake fire experimentally and numerically. The experimental programme contains two loading steps - pre-damage cyclic loading at room temperature and transient state tests with constant compression loads. Three finite element models are developed and validated against the test results. Upon validation, a total of 48 numerical results were generated in the parametric study to investigate the effects of thickness and strengths of steel tube, axial compression ratio and damage degree on the fire resistance of circular CFST columns. Based on the analysis on experimental and numerical results, the loading mechanism of circular CFST columns is discussed. A design method is proposed for the prediction of fire resistance time under different seismic pre-damage and compression loads. The predictions by the new method is compared with the newly generated experimental and numerical results and is found to be accurate and consistent with the mean value close to the unity and a coefficient of variation around 1%.

In this study, the progressive failure behavior of the composite fan blade dovetail element under tensile loading is numerically investigated through finite element(FE) simulation. The accuracy of prediction by FE simulation is verified through tensile testing. The dovetail element is one of the joints for coupling the fan blade with the disk in a turbofan engine. The dovetail element is usually made of a metal material such as titanium, but the application of composite material is being studied for weight reduction reasons. However, manufacturing defects such as drop-off ply and resin pocket inevitably occur in realizing complex shapes of the fan blade made by composite materials. To investigate the effect of these manufacturing defects on the composite fan blade dovetail element, we performed numerical simulation with FE model to compare the prediction of the FE model and the tensile test results. At this time, the cohesive zone model is used to simulate the delamination behavior. Finally, we found that FE simulation results agree with test results when considering thermal residual stress and through-thickness compression enhancement effect.
Ceramic coatings with high hardness and excellent chemical stability have been successfully applied to various machine elements, tools, and implants. However, in the case of monolayer coating on soft substrates, a high-stress concentration at the interface between the coating and the substrate causes delamination of the coating layer. Recently, to overcome this problem, multilayer coatings with a metal layer with a low modulus of elasticity added between the ceramic and the substrate have been widely applied. This study presents the third part of a recent study and focuses on the effect of the number of coating layers on the Brinell hardness of multilayered coating with TiN/Ti, following the two previous studies on a new Brinell hardness test method for a coated surface and on the influence of substrate and coating thickness. Indentation analyses are performed using finite element analysis software, von Mises stress and equivalent plastic strain distributions, load-displacement curves, and residual indentation shapes are presented. The number of TiN/Ti layers considerably affect the stress distributions and indentation shapes. Moreover, the greater the number of TiN/Ti layers, the higher is the Brinell hardness. The stress and plastic strain distributions confirm that the multilayer coatings improve the wear resistance. The results are expected to be used to design and evaluate various coating systems, and additional study is required.

We present the high-brightness large-area 10.1" in-cell polarizer display panel integrated with a wire grid polarizer (WGP) and metal reflector, from the initial design to final system development in a commercially feasible level. We have modeled and developed the WGP architecture integrated with the metal reflector in a single in-cell layer, to achieve excellent polarization efficiency as well as brightness enhancement through the light recycling effect. After the optimization of key experimental parameters via Taguchi method, the roll nanoimprint lithography employing a flexible large-area tiled mold has been utilized to create the 90 nm-pitch polymer resist pattern with the 54.1 nm linewidth and 5.1 nm residual layer thickness. The 90 nm-pitch Al gratings with the 51.4 nm linewidth and 2150 Å height have been successfully fabricated after subsequent etch process, providing the in-cell WGPs with high optical performance in the entire visible light regime. Finally we have integrated the WGP in a commercial 10.1" display device and demonstrated its actual operation, exhibiting 1.24 times enhancement of brightness compared to a conventional film polarizer-based one, with the contrast ratio of 1,004:1. Polarization efficiency and transmittance of the developed WGPs in an in-cell polarizer panel achieve 99.995 % and 42.3 %, respectively.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of periodontal granulation tissue preservation (PGTP) in access flap periodontal surgery. Methods: Twenty patients (stage III-IV periodontitis) with 42 deep periodontal pockets that did not resolve after non-surgical treatment were consecutively recruited. Access flap periodontal surgery was modified using PGTP. The clinical periodontal parameters were evaluated at 9 months. The differences in the amount of granulation tissue width (GTw) preserved were evaluated and the influence of smoking was analyzed. Results: GTw >1 mm was observed in 97.6% of interproximal defects, and the granulation tissue extended above the bone peak in 71.4% of defects. At 9 months, probing pocket depth reduction (4.33±1.43 mm) and clinical attachment gain (CAG; 4.10±1.75 mm) were statistically significant (P<0.001). The residual probing depth was 3.2±0.89 mm. When GTw extended above the interproximal bone peak (i.e., the interproximal supra-alveolar granulation tissue thickness [iSUPRA-GT] was greater than 0 mm), a significant CAG was recorded in the supra-alveolar component (1.67±1.32 mm, P<0.001). Interproximal gingival recession (iGR) was significant (P<0.05) only in smokers, with a reduction in the interdental papillary tissue height of 0.93±0.76 mm. In non-smokers, there was no increase in the iGR when the iSUPRA-GT was >0 mm. The clinical results in smokers were significantly worse. Conclusions: PGTP was used to modify access flap periodontal surgery by preserving affected tissues with the potential for recovery. The results show that preserving periodontal granulation tissue is an effective and conservative procedure in the surgical treatment of periodontal disease.

Autogenous bone grafts from the mandibular ramus are a known source of inadequate bone volume scenarios of the residual alveolar ridge. However, the conventional block-type harvesting technique cannot prevent bone marrow invasion, which can cause postoperative complications such as pain, swelling, and inferior alveolar nerve injury. This study aims to suggest a complication-free harvesting technique and present the results of bone grafting and donor sites. One patient received two dental implants with a complication-free harvesting technique that involves creation of ditching holes with a 1 mm round bur. Sagittal, coronal, and axial osteotomies produced grid-type cortical squares using a micro-saw and a round bur to confirm the cortical thickness. The grid-type cortical bone was harvested from the occlusal aspect, and the harvesting was extended through an additional osteotomy on the exposed and remaining cortical bone to prevent bone marrow invasion. The patient did not suffer postoperative severe pain, swelling, or numbness. After 15 months, the harvested site exhibited new cortical bone lining, and the grafted area had healed to a cortico-cancellous complex with functional loading of the implants. Our technique, grid-type cortical bone harvesting without bone marrow invasion, allowed application of autogenous bone without bone marrow invasion to achieve acceptable bone healing of the dental implants and to regenerate the harvested cortical bone.
