  • Using the mechanical treatments for mechanical properties improvement was rarely in the development scope before. This research approves through analytical ways that surface impacts can improve the quality of the surface significantly. This fact is approved for deposited titanium on silicone substrate. The new algorithm called minimum resultant error method (MREM) which is a direct combination of nanoindentation, FEM and dimensional analysis through a reverse method is utilized to extract the mechanical characteristics of the coating surface before and after impact. This method is extended to the time dependent behavior of the material to obtain strain rate coefficient. To implement this new approach, a new analysis technic is developed to define the residual stress field caused by surface impact as initial condition for nanoindentation. Analyzing the model in micro and macro scale at the same time was one of the main resolved challenges in this study. The result was obtaining of the constants of Johnson-Cook constitutive equation. Comparing the characteristics of the coating surface before and after impact shows high improvement in yield stress (34%), Elastic modulus (7.75%) and strain hardening coefficient (2.8%). The main achievement is that the strength improvement in titanium thin layer is much higher than bulk titanium. The yield strength shows 41.7% improvement for coated titanium comparing with 24% for bulk material. The rate of enhancement is about 6 times when it comes to the Young's modulus.

  • The Micro circular diaphragm (MCD) is the mechanical actuator part used in the micro electro-mechanical sensors (MEMS) that combine electrical and mechanical components. These actuators are working under harsh mechanical and thermal conditions, so it is very important to study the mechanical and thermal behaviors of these actuators, in order to do with its function successfully. The objective of this paper is to determine the thermo-mechanical behavior of MCD by developing the traditional bulge test technique to achieve the aims of this work. The specimen is first pre-stressed to ensure that is no initial deflection before applied the loads on diaphragm and then clamped between two plates, a differential pressure (P) and temperature ($T_b$) is leading to a deformation of the MCD. Analytical formulation of developed bulge test technique for MCD thermo-mechanical characterization was established with taking in-to account effect of the residual strength from pre-stressed loading. These makes the plane-strain bulge test ideal for studying the mechanical and thermal behavior of diaphragm in both the elastic and plastic regimes. The differential specimen thickness due to bulge effect to describe the mechanical behavior, and the temperature effect on the MCD material properties to study the thermal behavior under deformation were discussed. A finite element model (FEM) can be extended to apply for investigating the reliability of the proposed bulge test of MCD and compare between the FEM results and another one from analytical calculus. The results show that, the good convergence between the finite element model and analytical model.

  • Ductile fracture prediction is critical for the reasonable damage extent assessment of ships and offshore structures subjected to accidental loads, such as ship collisions and groundings. A fracture model combining the Hosford-Coulomb ductile fracture model with the domain of solid-to-shell equivalence model (HC-SDDE), was used in fracture simulations based on shell elements for the punching fracture experiments of unstiffened and stiffened panels. The flow stress and ductile fracture characteristics of JIS G3131 SPHC steel were identified through tension tests for flat bar, notched tension bar, central hole tension bar, plane strain tension bar, and pure shear bar specimens. Punching fracture tests for unstiffened and stiffened panels are conducted to validate the presented HC-DSSE model. The calibrated fracture model is implemented in a user-defined material subroutine. The force-indentation curves and final damage extents obtained from the simulations are compared with experimental results. The HC-DSSE fracture model provides reasonable estimations in terms of force-indentation paths and residual damage extents.

  • In this study, a method using single Wheatstone bridge flexure has been presented to measure hinge moment acting on control surfaces of wind tunnel models. The structural simplicity of the flexure reduces difficulty regarding gauging and wire-routing, and also makes it feasible to install flexures even inside thin wings. Some flexures were designed and fabricated under typical aerodynamic loads in wind tunnel test, and the strains on the flexure according to applied loads were compared with the result of the analysis by finite element method. The relation between applied loads and output signals showed good linearity, and the standard deviation on the residual errors from linear equation obtained by least square method was within 1.0 % of the maximum design moments. In addition, the FEM analysis on the thickness of load-connecting part of the flexure showed that the sensitivity was improved as the thickness became thin as much as desired to avoid buckling.

  • This paper presents a myoelectric hand prosthesis(MHP) with two degree of freedom(2-DOF), which consists of a mechanical hand, a surface myoelectric sensor(SMES) for measuring myoelectric signal, a control system and a charging battery. The actuation for the 2-DOF hand functions such as grasping and wrist rotation was performed by two DC-motors, and controlled by myoelectric signal measured from the residual forearm muscle. The grip force of the MHP was automatically changed by a mechanical automatic speed reducer mounted on the hand. The skin interface of SMES was composed of the electrodes using the SUS440 metal in order to endure a wet condition due to the sweat. The sensor was embedded with a amplifier and a filter circuit for rejecting the offset voltage caused by power line noises. The control system was composed of the grip force sensor, the slip sensor, and the two controllers. The two controllers were made of a RISC-type microprocessor, and its software was executed on a real-time kernel. The control system used Force Sensing Resistors, FSR, as slip pick-ups at the fingertip of a thumb and the grip force information was obtained from a strain-gauge on the lever of the MHP. The experimental results were showed that the proposed control system is feasible for the MHP.

  • In order to produce vinegar using onions, 12 acetic acid bacteria were screened from the juice of fallen peaches, and a strain showing the highest acetic acid productivity among them was selected and identified as Acetobacter tropicalis No. 22. The culture broth containing 2.5%(w/v) of initial sugar concentration showed maximum acetic production after 10 days of cultivation, and the acetic acid was produced at the highest rate and reached the maximum acidity after 2 to 6 days of cultivation when the residual sugar and the ethanol concentration were in the range of 1.6 to 2%(w/v) and 0.6 to 1.8%(v/v), respectively. Also optimum conditions for acetic acid production by response surface method using the fractional factorial design with 3 variables and 5 levels were involved with initial ethanol content of 4.67%(v/v), initial acidity of 0.03%, and initial glucose concentration of 2.35%(w/v) and predicted level of acetic acid production at these conditions was 3.77%.

  • The skin friction of a pile foundation is important and essential for its design and analysis. More attention has been given to the softening behaviour of skin friction of a pile. In this study, to investigate the load-transfer mechanism in such a case, an analytical solution using a nonlinear softening model was derived. Subsequently, a load test on the pile was performed to verify the newly developed analytical solution. The comparison between the analytical solution and test results showed a good agreement in terms of the axial force of the pile and the stress-strain relationship of the pile-soil interface. The softening behaviour of the skin friction can be simulated well when the pile is subjected to large loads; however, such behaviour is generally ignored by most existing analytical solutions. Finally, the effects of the initial shear modulus and the ratio of the residual skin friction to peak skin friction on the load-settlement curve of a pile were investigated by a parametric analysis.

  • The objective of this analytical study is to calculate the elasto-plastic stresses of Functionally Graded (FG) hyperbolic disc subjected to uniform temperature. The material properties (elastic modulus, thermal expansion coefficient and yield strength) and the geometry (thickness) of the disc are assumed to vary radially with a power law function, but Poisson's ratio does not vary. FG disc material is assumed to be non-work hardening. Radial and tangential stresses are obtained for various thickness profile, temperature and material properties. The results indicate that thickness profile and volume fractions of constituent materials play very important role on the thermal stresses of the FG hyperbolic discs. It is seen that thermal stresses in a disc with variable thickness are lower than those with constant thickness at the same temperature. As a result of this, variations in the thickness profile increase the operation temperature. Moreover, thickness variation in the discs provides a significant weight reduction. A disc with lower rigidity at the inner surface according to the outer surface should be selected to obtain almost homogenous stress distribution and to increase resistance to temperature. So, discs, which have more rigid region at the outer surface, are more useful in terms of resistance to temperature.
