  • The yellow tea thrips, Scirtothrips dorsalis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), has been regarded as a minor pest on citrus on Jeju Island. However, the damage of yellow tea thrips has gradually increased since 2007. This study was conducted to develop a forecasting model for generation peak time of S. dorsalis by using degree-days. Simple linear regression analysis was applied to determine the relationship between the generation number (x, dependent variable) and degree-days (y, independent variable). As a result, two regression models were established: citrus-based model (y = 310.9x + 69.0, $r^2$=0.99) and green tea-based model (y = 285.7x + 84.1, $r^2$=0.99). The models was fitted by independent data sets obtained from 2013 and evaluated using the technique of RSS (residual sum of square) and ${\chi}^2$-test. The green tea based-model showed a good fitting ability. The discrepancy between model outputs and actual data, and the practical application of models were discussed.

  • Piston cores retrieved from the eastern part of the deep-water Ulleung Basin were analyzed to access the potential of hydrocarbon gas generation and natural gas hydrate (NGH) formation. Seismic data acquired in the study area were also analyzed to determine the presence of hydrocarbon gas and/or NGH, and to map their distribution. Core analyses revealed high total organic carbon (TOC) contents which favor hydrocarbon generation. The cores recovered from the southern study area showed the sufficient residual hydrocarbon gas concentrations for the formation of significant NGH. These cores also showed the cracks developed parallel to the bedding that suggest significant gas content in situ. A number of seismic blanking zones were observed on seismic data. They are identified as vertical to sub-vertical chimneys caused by the upward migration of pore fluid or gas, and containing of free gas and/or NGH. Often, they are associated with velocity pull-up structures that are interpreted to be the result of high-velocity NGH. The seismic data also showed several bottom-simulating reflectors (BSRs) that are associated with overlying NGH and underlying free gas. The distribution of blanking zones and BSRs would be impacted by the lateral differences of upward methane fluxes.

  • Gasification is the essential technology that can meet the interim hydrogen demand of large quantity before entering the hydrogen economy. Although the hydrogen production that is based upon the pure renewable energy like wind and solar power will eventually prevail, the interim mass production of hydrogen for the next ten to twenty years will come from the technologies that can demonstrate the economic feasibility in production cost with a high potential in minimizing CO$_2$ generation and in improving plant efficiency. Particularly, feedstock such as natural gas, coal, petroleum residual oil, wastes, and biomass appears to be utilized in Korea as hydrogen source, at least during the short and medium period of time, owing to the advantage in production cost. Because one of the main reasons behind the recent hydrogen issue is the reduction requirement of CO$_2$ that would be controlled according to the climate change protocol, hydrogen production technologies must be developed to yield the minimal CO$_2$ generation.

  • In recent years, the need of high accuracy navigation for vehicles has increased due to the development of autonomous driving vehicles and increase in land transportation convenience. This study is performed for vehicle users to achieve a performance of centimeter-level positioning accuracy by utilizing Compact Network Real-time Kinematic (RTK) that is applicable as a national-level infrastructure. To this end, medium-baseline RTK was implemented in real time to estimate accurate integer ambiguities between reference stations for reliable generation of Network RTK correction using the linear combination of carrier-phase observations and L1/L2 pseudo-range measurements. The residual tropospheric error was estimated in real time to improve the accuracy of double-differenced integer ambiguity resolution between network configuration reference stations that have at least 30 km or longer baseline distance. In addition, C++ based software was developed to enable real-time generation and broadcasting of Compact Network RTK correction information by utilizing an accurately estimated double-differenced integer ambiguity values. As a result, the horizontal and vertical 95% accuracy was 2.5cm and 5.2cm, respectively, without performance degradation due to user's position change within the network.

  • When a crack exists under a residual stress, for example in welds, the crack can be closed and it shows non symmetric behavior for tension and compression. Ultrasonic detection method for those nonlinear cracks has been developed recently. The method uses the higher order harmonics generating at the crack surface. In this study, parameter study was carried out for the analysis of the harmonics generation at a nonlinear contact interface as a preliminary study for general 3-dimensional cracks. One-dimensional problem with simple bilinear behavior for the contacting surface was considered. The amplitude of second harmonic to the fundamental wave was obtained for various stiffness ratios, incident frequencies, and the contacting layer thicknesses.

  • Decomposition behavior of $ferro-Si_3N_4$was investigated with varying temperature and holding time in mud components for high temperature refractory applications. Porosities gradually increased with increasing temperature and holding time due to the carbothermal reduction of $Si_3N_4\;and\;SiO_2$. Silicon monoxide (SiO) as a intermediate resulted from evaporation of $Si_3N_4\;and\;SiO_2$ reacted with C sources to generate needle-like ${\beta}-SiC$ and Fe in $Si_3N_4$ acted as a catalyst in order to enhance growth of SiC grain with the preferred orientation. SiC generation yield increased with increasing holding time, all of the $Si_3N_4\;and\;SiO_2$ affected on SiC formation up to 2h. However, SiC generation was only dependent on residual $SiO_2$ over 2h, because the carbothermal reduction reaction of $Si_3N_4$ was no longer possible at that time.

  • Sintering behavior and lightweight characteristics of porcelain by addition of FAHM (Fly-Ash Hollow Microsphere) were evaluated. Green body of Backja composition (general porcelain) in which FAHM was added(15 and 20 wt%) was made by slip casting method. The green body was sintered at 1270 and $1290^{\circ}C$ and maintained for 1h. The bulk density and linear shrinkage of the sintered body with FAHM (20 wt%) decreased. As the contents of FAHM. increased, mullite and cristobalite phases increased. In the microstructure, FAHM shells remained after sintering, and the generation of mullite fibers around FAHM shells also were confirmed. the weight of porcelain with of 20% FAHM decreased by 40% and residual FAHM shells promoted the mullite of generation in the matrix.

  • For the purpose of indoor air purification, air conditioner or purifier is generally used, but the long operating time induced the contamination by cumulation of bacteria in the air filter. The ozone sterilization method can be one of the effective sterilization method for this case. Ozone has not leave a secondary residual contaminants, as well as a strong sterilization power. In this study, nonthermal plasma technology is investigated as an ozone generator for the air filter sterilization. Additionally, nonthermal plasma technology is possible to obtain the generation of negative ions and electrostatic force by simply adjusting the applied voltage.

  • Recently constructions of large scale infrastructures have been tending upwards, due to continuous growth of economy and increase of demands. In addition, hydration heat occurs rapidly in early age just after casting of concrete owing to higher strength and massive structure of concrete. Consequently, cracks and residual stress are developed in accordance to field condition. Moreover, These have harmful influences on safety, durability, watertight, waterproof, and shape of concrete structure. In this study, hydration heat tests were conducted on three of self-compacting concrete and one of high strength concrete. Heat generation and temperature are compared and evaluated based on the test results.

  • When ultrasound propagates to a crack, transmitted and reflected waves are generated. These waves have useful information for the detection of the crack lying in a structure. When a crack is under residual stress, crack surfaces will contact each other and a closed crack is formed. For closed cracks, the fundamental component of the reflected and transmitted waves will be weak, and as such it is not easy to detect them. In this case, higher harmonic components will be useful. In this paper, nonlinear characteristic of a closed crack is modeled by a continuum material having a tensile-compressive unsymmetry, and the amplitude of the second harmonic wave was obtained by spectrum analysis. Variation of the second harmonic component depending on the nonlinearity of the inclusion was investigated. Two-dimensional plane strain model is considered, and finite element software ABAQUS/Explicit is used.
