  • In order to understand why annealing at $480^{\circ}C$ for several hour prevents the initiation of PWSCC, the residual stress variation with isothermal annealing at $480^{\circ}C$ and isochronal annealing between 480 and $800^{\circ}C$ in cold rolled Alloy 600 was investigated by the XRD method. The isothermal annealing decreased residual stress slightly in the rolling direction but not in the transverse direction, whereas the isochronal annealing for two hours increased residual stress. It seemed that the decrease in residual stress by isothermal annealing was due to lattice contraction by an ordering reaction because the isothermal annealing increased hardness. The effects of the isochronal annealing could be interpreted as the influence of thermal expansion and a disordering reaction.

  • Interest in remanufacturing of part has significantly increased to reduce used material and energy together. The directed energy deposition (DED) process has widely applied to remanufacturing of the part. An excessive residual stress takes place in the vicinity of the deposited region by the DED process due to rapid heating and rapid cooling (RHRC) phenomenon. The excessive residual stress decreases the reliability of the remanufactured part. Therefore, thermo-mechanical analysis for the remanufacturing of the part is needed to investigate heat transfer and residual stress characteristics in the vicinity of the deposited region. The thermo-mechanical analysis of a large volume deposition is significantly difficult to perform due to the requirement of a long computation time and a large computer memory. The goal of this paper is to investigate thermo-mechanical characteristics for remanufacturing of the ATC part using a DED process. The methodology of the thermo-mechanical analysis for a large volume deposition is proposed. From the results of analysis, heat transfer and residual stress characteristics during deposition and cooling stages are investigated. In addition, the proper deposition strategy from the viewpoint of the residual stress is discussed.

  • Instrumented indentation testing has been widely used for residual stress measurement. The Knoop indentation is mainly selected for determining anisotropic mechanical properties and non-equibiaxial residual stress. However, the measurement of equibiaxial stress state and compressive residual stress on a specimen surface using Knoop indentation is neither fully comprehended nor unavailable. In this study, we investigated stress conversion factors for measuring Knoop indentation on equibiaxial stress state through indentation depth using finite element analysis. Knoop indentation was conducted for specimens to determine tensile and compressive equibiaxial residual stress. Both were found to be increased proportionally according to indentation depth. The stress field beneath the indenter during each indentation test was also analyzed. Compressive residual stress suppressed the in-plane expansion of stress field during indentation. In contrast, stress fields beneath the indenter developed diagonally downward for tensile residual stress. Furthermore, differences between trends of stress fields at long and short axes of Knoop indenter were observed due to difference in indenting angles and the projected area of plastic zone that was exposed to residual stress.

  • Although the accuracy of handwritten character recognition based on deep networks has been shown to be superior to that of the traditional method, the use of an overly deep network significantly increases time consumption during parameter training. For this reason, this paper took the training time and recognition accuracy into consideration and proposed a novel handwritten character recognition algorithm with newly designed network structure, which is based on an extended nonlinear kernel residual network. This network is a non-extremely deep network, and its main design is as follows:(1) Design of an unsupervised apriori algorithm for intra-class clustering, making the subsequent network training more pertinent; (2) presentation of an intermediate convolution model with a pre-processed width level of 2;(3) presentation of a composite residual structure that designs a multi-level quick link; and (4) addition of a Dropout layer after the parameter optimization. The algorithm shows superior results on MNIST and SVHN dataset, which are two character benchmark recognition datasets, and achieves better recognition accuracy and higher recognition efficiency than other deep structures with the same number of layers.

  • The purpose of this study is to confirm the decreasing problems of residual bending strength, and the fracture machanism experimentally when CFRP composite laminates are subjected to Foreign Object Damage. Composite laminates used for this experiment are CFRP orthotropy laminated plates, which have two-interfaces [O/sub 6//sup o//90/sub 6//sup o/]sub sym/ and four-interfaces [O/sub 3//sup o//90/sub 6//sup o//O/sub 3//sup o]/sub sym/. When the specimen is subjected to transverse impact by a steel ball, the delamination area generated by impact damage is observed by using SAM(Scanning Acoustic Microscope). also, Thefracture surfaces obtained by three-point bending test were observed by using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope). Then, fracture mechanism was investigated based on the observed delamination area and fracture surface. The results were summarized as follows; (1) It is found that for the specimen with more interface, the critical delamination energy is increased while delamination-development energy is decreased. (2) Residual bending strength of specimen A is greater than that of Specimen B within the impact range of impact energy 1. 65J (impacted-side compression) and 1. 45J (impacted-side tension). On the other hand, when the impact energy is beyond the above ranges, residual bending strength of specimen A is smaller than that of specimen B. (3) In specimen A and B, residual strength of CFRP plates subjected to impact damage is lower in the impacted-side compression than in the impacted-side tension. (4) In the case of impacted-side compression, fracture is propagated from the transverse crack generat-ed near impact point. On the other hand, fracture is developed toward the impact point from the edge of interface-B delamination in the case of impacted-side tension.

  • Recently, the production of shipbuilding and offshore plant industries, with a trend toward large structures, has led to an increased use of high strength ultra-thick plates. The use of ultra-thick plates increases the welding tasks, and the welding process generates distortion and residual stress in the weldment because of the rapid heating and cooling. Welding distortion and residual stress in the welded structure resulte in many troubles such as deformation and life deterioration. In particular, the welding residual stress has an important effect on welding deformation, fatigue, buckling strength, brittleness, etc. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the residual stress at a multi-pass weldment using an experimental method for EH36 high-tension steel. In this experimental method, AIS3000 was used to measure the residual stress of a welded part, HAZ, and base metal; EPMA and XRD were used to study the material properties.

  • The study investigated effects of residual stresses and Charpy impact energy on brittle fractures of the butt weld between the valve and the piping, and of the valve body in nuclear power plants via a linear elastic fracture mechanics approach in the ASME B&PV Code, Sec.XI and finite element analysis. Weld residual stress in a butt weld between close check valve and piping, and residual stress in the valve due to casting process were assumed to be proportional to yield strength of base metal. Operating stresses in the butt weld and the valve body were calculated using approximate engineering formulae and finite element analysis, respectively. Applied stress intensity factors were calculated by assuming postulated cracks with specific sizes and then by substituting the residual stresses and the operating stresses into engineering formulae presented in the ASME B&PV Code, Sec.III. Plane strain fracture toughness was derived by using a correlation between Charpy V-notch impact energy and fracture toughness. Structural integrity of the weld and the body against brittle fracture was assessed by using the applied stress intensity factors, plane strain fracture toughness and the linear elastic fracture mechanics approach. As a result, it was identified that the structural integrity was maintained with decreasing the residual stress levels and increasing the Charpy V-notch impact energy.

  • Nitrite, a curing agent of meat products, is precursors of carcinogenic N-nitrosamines during processing of meat products or under human stomach conditions as well as having its own toxicity. Some researches have been conducted to evaluate the effects of ionizing radiation on the reduction of residual nitrite and N-nitrosamines in an aqueous model system and cured meat products with different packaging methods during storage. These results showed that the gamma irradiation was effective in reducing the residual nitrite and N-nitrosamines in an aqueous model system as well as meat products. Especially, irradiation combined with vacuum or modified atmosphere packaging was more effective in nitrite and N-nitrosamines reduction than aerobic packaging during storage. The objective of this review is to introduce the irradiation technology for the application of reducing the residual nitrite and N-nitrosamine contents in meat products.

  • We perform the frequency-domain waveform inversion based on the residual-selection strategy. In the residual-selection strategy, we classify time-domain residual wavefields into several groups according to the order of absolute amplitudes. Because the residual wavefields are normalized after regularization of the gradient directions within each group, the residual-selection strategy plays a role in enhancing the small-amplitude wavefields, which contributes to improving the deep parts of inverted subsurface images. After classifying residuals in the time domain, they are transformed to the frequency domain. Waveform inversion is performed in the frequency domain using the back-propagation technique which has been popularly used in reverse-time migration. The residual-selection strategy is applied to the SEG/EAGE salt and IFP Marmousi models. Numerical results show that the residual-selection strategy yields better results than the conventional frequency-domain waveform inversion.
