  • An application of the instrumented indentation technique has been expanded from the measurements of hardness and elastic modulus to the analysis of residual stress. A slope of the indentation loading curve increases (or decreases) according to compressive (or tensile) residual stress. A theoretical equation has been established for quantifying residual stress from the slope change. However, a precise observation of the remnant indents is indispensible because the theoretical approach needs actual contact information. In addition, the conventional hardness test is still used for predicting the residual stress distribution of welded joints. Thus, we observed the three-dimensional morphologies of the remnant indents formed on artificial stress states and analyzed stress effects on morphological recovery of the indents. First, a depth recovery ratio, which has been regarded as a sensitive stress indicator, did not show a clear dependency with the residual stress. Thus an analysis on volumetric recovery was tried in this study and yielded a inverse proportional behavior with the residual stress. In addition, an elastic to plastic volume recovery ratio showed more significant correlation with the residual stress.

  • Residual capacity is defined as the load carrying capacity of an RC column after undergoing severe damage. Evaluation of residual capacity of RC columns is necessary to avoid damage initiation in RC structures. The central aspect of the current research is to propose an empirical formula to estimate the residual capacity of RC columns after undergoing severe damage. This formula facilitates decision making of whether a replacement or a repair of the damaged column is adequate for further use. Available literature mainly focused on the simulation of explosion loads by using simplified pressure time histories to develop residual capacity of RC columns and rarely simulated the actual explosive. Therefore, there is a gap in the literature concerning general relation between blast damage of columns with different explosive loading conditions for a reliable and quick evaluation of column behavior subjected to blast loading. In this paper, the Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) technique is implemented to simulate high fidelity blast pressure propagations. LS-DYNA software is utilized to solve the finite element (FE) model. The FE model is validated against the practical blast tests, and outcomes are in good agreement with test results. Multivariate linear regression (MLR) method is utilized to derive an analytical formula. The analytical formula predicts the residual capacity of RC columns as functions of structural element parameters. Based on intensive numerical simulation data, it is found that column depth, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, concrete strength and column width have significant effects on the residual axial load carrying capacity of reinforced concrete column under blast loads. Increasing column depth and longitudinal reinforcement ratio that provides better confinement to concrete are very effective in the residual capacity of RC column subjected to blast loads. Data obtained with this study can broaden the knowledge of structural response to blast and improve FE models to simulate the blast performance of concrete structures.

  • The main object of this paper is to investigate the effects of high temperatures on the physical and mechanical properties of natural sand concrete(NSC) and crushed sand concrete(CSC). Test samples were exposed to high temperature ranging from $200^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$. After exposure, various tests were conducted. Color image analysis and weight losses were determined and compressive strength test and splitting tensile strength test were conducted. The results indicated that weight losses increased as exposure temperature increased with comparable decreasing rate. The results also showed that compressive strength and splitting tensile strength and modulus of elasticity decreased as exposure temperature increased. The results also showed that residual compressive strength of NSC decreased more drastically than that of CSC at $200^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$. Residual splitting tensile strength of NSC decreased more than that of CSC at $200^{\circ}C$, while NSC and CSC showed comparable residual strength ratio at $800^{\circ}C$.

  • Recently, granular soils having a large particle size are frequently used as a filling material in the construction of foundation, harbor, dam, and so on. The shear behavior of this granular soil plays a key role in the stability of structures. For example, soil particle crushing occurring at the interface between structure and soil and/or within soil mass can cause the disturbance of ground characteristics and consequently induce an issues in respect of stability of structures. In order to investigate the shear behavior according to an existence and nonexistence of particle crushing, numerical analyses were conducted by using the DEM(Discrete Element Method)-based software program PFC(Particle Flow Code). Using the crushing model and non-crushing model which were created in this study, numerical analyses of ring shear test were conducted and their results were analyzed and compared. In general, landslide and slope stability are accompanied by a large displacement and consequently not only a peak strength but also a residual strength are very important in the analysis of landslide and slope stability. However the direct shear test which has been commonly used in the determination of shear strength parameters has a limitation on displacement therefore the residual strength parameters can not be obtained. The characteristics of residual shear behavior were investigated through the numerical analyses in this study.

  • Recently, as concern about the residual antibiotics in milk increase, the detection methods of residual antibiotics used extensevely at the present time were investigated and compared to their properties and the detection limits of variable antibiotics. At first, comparactive tests of the detectable sensitivity of 4 test organisms, B. cereus, B. subtilis, M.luteus, B.stearothermophilus C-953, were performed by disc assay. As a result, B.stearothermophilus was the most sensitive strain of all other strains and showe the detect limit of 5-50 ppb for penlicillins (PCs). And also, B.subitilis was showed the more effective detection limit, 200-400 ppb, for aminoglycosides (AGs) and M.luteus was showed predominant sensitivity , 50-500 ppb for macrolides(MLs) and B.cereus was the most sensitive strain for tetracyclines (TCs) and showed the detection limit of 100-400 ppb. Therefore, each test strains were showed a different sensitivity in the detection of the different antibiotic families. When the detection limit of disc assay and other methods were compared, TTCmethod was less sensitive than other methods showing 5-50 ppb detectable lebel for PCs. Also, for the detection of other antibiotic families TTC method was showed the worst sensitivity and Delvo and Charm Farm tests were similar to the detectable properties of AGs and MLs. Although disc assay was showed the similar detection limit for PCs with Delvo and Charm Farm, it was more widely effective for the detection of kanamycin, erythromycin, chlortetracycline, doxycycline, verginiamycin and so on than Delvo or Charm Farm. CharmII test was showed the best sensitivity for the most of antibiotics except neomycin and gentamycin. But it was necessary that different tests must be performed to each antibiotic family and so it was regarded that the effectiveness of that method was low.

  • Purpose: This study examines the safety management of anchors that have already been constructed and evaluates the results of lift-off tests conducted at the site. The purpose of the project is to study countermeasures if necessary. Method: Compare the residual load gained after the lift-off test at 36 points behind the site with the preemptive load, allowable load, and design load. We also analyze stability through this and evaluate the stability of anchors. Results and Conclusion: The residual tension at 26 points remained stable. However, the residual load at 10 points was analyzed to be greater than the designed load and less than the allowable load, and it was evaluated as an instability that could cause fracture problems. Therefore, anchors with unstable conditions at 10 points should be monitored and monitored through periodic measurements and quality tests, and the anchor should be observed at the surrounding points as well as the relevant points to maintain stability.

  • A family of test statistics is proposed for testing whether or not the mean residual life(MRL) changes its trend. We do not assume that the turning point or the proportion before the turning point is known. This family includes the test statistic proposed by Aly (1990) and Hawkins, Kochar and Leader (1992) for complete samples. We establish the asymptotic null distribution of test statistics and obtain asymptotic critical values of the asymptotic null distribution using Durbin's approximation. We study Monte Carlo simulation to compare the proposed tests with previously known tests.

  • In the nano/micro scale, material properties are dependent on the size-scale of a structure. However, conventional micro-scale tensile tests have limitations to obtain reliable values of nano-scale material properties owing to residual stress and elastic slippage in the gripping/aligning process. The indenter-driven nano-scale tensile test provides prominent advantages simple testing device, high-quality nano-scale metallic specimen with negligible residual stress. In this paper, two-types of specimens (a specimen with multi-testing parts and a specimen with a single-testing part) are discussed. Focused ion beam (FIB) is employed to fabricate a nano-scale specimen from a thin nickel film. Using the specimen with a single-testing part, we obtained a nano-scale stress-strain curve of electroplated nickel film.
