The residual stresses produced by a circumferential weld between axisymmetric cylinders are one of the most important problems concerning buckling strength, fatigue strength, stress corrosion cracking in shell structures, and arc quite different from those due to a butt weld between flat plates. This paper presents experimental studies on weld cylinder models of various heat inputs and thin cylinder diameters by blind hole drilling method. As a result, it is certified that weld residual stress (axial stress and hoop stress) is larger, as heat input and shell cylinder diameter are larger, and that experimental results show good agreement with the result of preceding researchers.
There are many Industry Code and Standard (ICS) for Structural Integrity Assessment (SIA) on welded structure with defect. The general ICSs, such as R6, BS 7910 and API 579-1/ASME FFS-1, provide equations to determine the upper bound residual stress profiles based on collections from many literatures. However, these residual stress profiles used in the SIA cause the conservative design for welded structures. In this study, the structural integrity assessment for girth weld in pipeline has been conducted based on fracture mechanics. In addition, thermo-elastic plastic FE analysis was performed for evaluating the residual stress of girth weld in pipeline. The weight function solution is used to determine the stress intensity factor using the residual stress profile obtained by the FE analysis. This approach can account for redistribution and relaxation of residual stress as the defects grow. In order to the evaluate quantitative comparison between BS 7910 and weight function solution, structural integrity assessment determining allowable crack size on cracked pipe was performed with failure assessment diagram.
Stress relaxation tests with different percent deformation were performed for crude and refined starch gels of acorn. With no relation to percent deformation, refined starch gel had higher initial stress ($\sigma_e$) and lower equilibrium stress ($\sigma_e$) than crude starch gel. But the ratio of equilibrium stress to initial stress ($\sigma_e$/$\sigma_o$) was minimum at 60 percent deformation. The analysis of relaxation curves by successive residual method revealed that the rheological behavior of acorn starch gels could be expressed by generalized Maxwell model. The element numbers of models for crude and refined starch gel were 7-element and 5-element at 60 percent deformation, and 5-element and 3-element at 45 percent deformation, respectively.
The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of residual stress on fatigue crack growth behavior. For this purpose, submerged arc welding was performed on SM50A steel plate and post weld heta treatment (PWHT) was followed. Residual stress distribution on the weld plate was determined by a hole drilling method and a series of .DELTA.P-const. and .DELTA.K-decreasing fatigue test were performed on the three different regions, i.e. weld metal, HAZ and base metla. Following conclusins were achieved. 1. In "as welded" specimens, tensile residual stresses were produced in the center portion of the specimen while compressive residual stresses were produced near the edges. In PWHT specimens, however, most of the residual stresses were disappeared. 2. The fatigue crack growth behavior in low .DELTA.K region was considerably affected by the presence of residual stress in both "as welded" and PWHT specimens. 3. Because of the relaxation of residual stresses in PWHT condition, the values of m increased from 2.62-2.78 (in the "as welded" condition) to 3.57-3.91 (in the "PWHT" condition)3.91 (in the "PWHT" condition)condition)

An evaluation of fatigue life of welded components is complicated due to various geometrically complex welding details and stress raisers in vicinity of weld beads, ego under cuts, overlaps and blow holes. These factors have a considerable influence on the fatigue strength of welded joints, as well as the welding residual stress which is relaxed depending on the distribution of local stress at the front of the stress raisers. To reasonably evaluate fatigue life, the effect of geometries and welding residual stress should be taken into account. The several methods based on the notch strain approach have been proposed in order to accomplish this. These methods, however, result in differences between analytical and experimental results due to discrepancies in estimated amount of relaxed welding residual stress present. In this paper, an approach that involves the use of a modified notch strain approach considering geometrical effects and a residual stress relaxation model based on experimental results was proposed. The fatigue life for five types of representative welding details, ego cruciform, cover plate, longitudinal stiffener, gusset and side attachment joint, are evaluated using this method.
#140 mesh and #600 mesh wheels were adopted to grind (111) and (100) oriented single crystalline silicon wafer and the grinding induced change of the surface integrity was investigated. For this purpose, microroughness, residual stress and phase transformation were analyzed for the ground surface. Microroughness was analyzed using AFM (Atomic Force Microscope) and crystal structure was analyzed using micro-Raman spectroscopy. The residual stress and phase transformation were also analyzed after thermal annealing in the air. As a result, microroughness of (111) wafer was larger than that of (100) wafer after grinding. It was observed using Raman spectrum that the silicon was transformed from diamond cubic Si-I to Si-III(body centered tetragonal) or Si-XII(rhombohedral). Residual stress relaxation was also shown in cavities which were produced after grinding. The thermal annealing was effective for the recovery of the silicon phase to the original phase and the residual stress relaxation.

Plastic deformation was observed by TEM around the intragranular SiC particles in the $Al_2O_3$ matrix for $Al_2O_3/SiC$ nanocomposite system. The dislocations are generated at selected planes and there is a tendency for the dislocations to form a subgrain boundary structure with low-angel grain boundaries and networks. In this study, dislocation generated in the $Al_2O_3$ matrix during cooling down from sintering temperatures by the highly localized thermal stresses within and/or around SiC particles caused from the thermal expansion mismatch between $Al_2O_3$ matrix and SiC particle was observed. In monolithic $Al_2O_3$ and $Al_2O_3/SiC$ microcomposite system. These phenomena is closely related to the plastic relaxation of the elastic stress and strain energy associated with both thermal misfitting inclusions and creep behaviors. The plastic relaxation behavior was explained by combination of yield stress and internal stress.
Precision injection molding process is of great importance since precision optical products such as CD, DVD and various lens are manufactured by those process. In such products, birefringence affects the optical performance while residual stress that determines the geometric precision level. Therefore, it is needed to study residual stress and birefringence that affect deformation and optical quality, respectively in precision optical product. In the present study, we tried to predict residual stress, final shrinkage and birefringence in injection molded parts in a systematic way, and compared numerical results with the corresponding experimental data. Residual stress and birefringence can be divided into two parts, namely flow induced and thermally induced portions. Flow induced birefringence is dominant during the flow, whereas thermally induced stress is much higher than flow induced one when amorphous polymer undergoes rapid cooling across the glass transition region. A numerical system that is able to predict birefringence, residual stress and final shrinkage in injection molding process has been developed using hybrid finite element-difference method for a general three dimensional thin part geometry. The present modeling attempts to integrate the analysis of the entire process consistently by assuming polymeric materials as nonlinear viscoelastic fluids above a no-flow temperature and as linear viscoelastic solids below the no-flow temperature, while calculating residual stress, shrinkage and birefringence accordingly. Thus, for flow induced ones, the Leonov model and stress-optical law are adopted, while the linear viscoelastic model, photoviscoelastic model and free volume theory taking into account the density relaxation phenomena are employed to predict thermally induced ones. Special cares are taken of the modeling of the lateral boundary condition which can consider product geometry, histories of pressure and residual stress. Deformations at and after ejection have been considered using thin shell viscoelastic finite element method. There were good correspondences between numerical results and experimental data if final shrinkage, residual stress and birefringence were compared.

The contour method is based on the elastic superposition principle, and relies on deformations that occur when a residually stressed part is cut along a plane. During the cut, the part is constrained at a location along the cut so that deformations are restrained as much as possible. The displacement is applied to an elastic FE model of the half. When plasticity is involved in the relaxation process, the superposition principle is no longer valid, and stress error in the resulting measurement of residual stress would be caused. Residual stress states in a laser peened Ti-6Al-4V strip were taken for the FE simulation.
