  • The mean residual function is the expected remaining life of an item at age x. The problem of trend change in the mean residual life is great interest in the reliability and survival analysis. In this paper, we develop a family of test statistics for testing whether or not the mean residual life changes its trend. The asymptotic normality of the test statistics is established. Monte Carlo simulations are conducted to study the performance of our test statistics.

  • Procedures are presented for influence of shot peening on fatigue strength, fatigue life and effects of shot peening are discussed from experiments were taken between shot peened and unpeened SPS5, SM45C specimens. After the residual stress on shot peened specimens was measured by X-ray diffractometer, rotating bending fatigue tests were carried out. In addition, the compressive residual stress profile was obtained by the superposition method of three stresses which is based on Al-Obaid's equation. Predicted fatigue life considering residual stress profile which was obtained by the Al-Obaid's equation and another predicted fatigue life considering residual stress profile which was measured in test were compared. For the purpose of predicting fatigue life, Morrow's equation considering the residual stress and mean stress was used.

  • A class of life distributions, whose mean residual life keeps stable at its earlier phase and then starts to decrease in time, is proposed to model the life of an element haying survived its burn-in. A strongly consistent estimator and a nonparametric testing procedure are developed to locate the occurrence of the change-point of the mean residual life. Finally, some numerical simulations are employed to be an illustration as well.

  • The effects of re-peening on the compressive residual stress and fatigue life of Al7075-T6 were investigated. The compressive residual stress induced on the surface of components by shot peening is known to increase the fatigue life. However, the fatigue load relaxes the compressive residual stress of components. Re-peening is a technique to again induce the relaxed compressive residual stress and increase the total fatigue life of components. In this study, the re-peening process was applied to fatigue-loaded specimens. The compressive residual stress and fatigue life were examined for re-peened specimens with fatigue ratios of 30%, 50%, and 70%. The results showed that the compressive residual stress of the specimens was relaxed under the fatigue load. The re-peening process significantly increases the compressive residual stress and total fatigue life.

  • Residual wall thicknesses, corrosion rates, and residual life of thirty four samples of cast iron pipes(CIPs) and ductile cast iron pipes(DCIPs) collected from water mains of B city were studied to estimate their remaining service life or optimum time of rehabilitation. The internal maximum corrosion depths of samples measured using a dial gauge after shot blasting were twice higher than the external in most cases. Therefore corrosion of water pipes was much more affected by internal water quality than soil. Residual wall thicknesses of DCIPs were higher than those of CIPs. That reason was thought to be that DCIPs have been protected from internal corrosion by lining cement mortar. Residual life calculated by maximum corrosion rate was ranged up to 44 years with 12.40 years average. Since most CIPs were much deteriorated, rehabilitation plan should be established soon in B city. Residual life of DCIP was 33.52 years average. When cement mortar lining is used up by neutralization of DCIPs. DCIP also should be rehabilitated.

  • Fatigue crack shape variation by a residual stress during crack growth and life predition are studied. An analytical method is presented to predict the influence of a residual stress due to heattreatment on crack shape variations. Computer simulation results using this me thod are graphically shown that crack growth rate to surface direction are decreased due to compressive residual stress exisiting in surface area. These results are commpared with experimental results. The fatigue life is also predicted by computer simulation of crack aspect ratio variation which is based on the surface crack length increment per unit cycle calculated from a-N diagram. Predited life is about 12 percent lower than experimental life.

  • The mean residual life function is the expected remaining life of an item at age $\chi$. The problem of trend change in the mean residual life is great interest in the reliability and survival analysis. In this paper we develop a new test statistic for testing whether or not the mean residual life changes its trend based on a complete sample. Monte Carlo simulations are conducted to compare the perfor mance of our test statistic with that of previously known tests.

  • Damage often occurs on the surface of railway wheel by wheel-rail contact fatigue. It should be removed before reaching wheel failure, because wheel failure can cause derailment with loss of life and property. The increase or decrease of the contact fatigue life by the metal removal of the contact surface were shown by many researchers, but it has not explained precisely why fatigue life increases or decreases. In this study, the effect of metal removal depth on the contact fatigue life for railway wheel has been evaluated by applying finite element analysis. It has been revealed that the residual stress and the plastic flow are the main factors determining the fatigue life. The railway wheel has the initial residual stress formed during the manufacturing process, and the residual stress is changed by thermal stress induced by braking. It has been found that the initial residual stress determines the amount of metal removal depth. Also, the effects of the initial residual stress and metal removal on the contact fatigue lift has been estimated, and an equation is proposed to decide the optimal metal removal depth for maximizing the contact fatigue life.

  • This paper presents a new methodology that allows the influence of technological obsolescence and technology composite competitiveness to estimate technology economic life. In this paper the patent citation life analysis is used to estimate technology representative life, and technology residual life analysis is employed to estimate residual life using the linear and inverse functions. The technology economic life will be determined by combining the estimation results of patent citation life analysis and technology residual life analysis. This paper includes an example of applying it to the US patent data for 5 communications areas. Therefore, this logical concept can be applied usefully to determine the technology economic life and be expected to contribute to obtain credibility of technology valuation.

  • According to our fatigue tests carried out at 20 Hz, R=0.1 on transversely butt-welded joints, fatigue strengths of as-welded specimens, that is, specimens having residual stress are higher than those of annealed specimens in short life range, but vice verse in long life range. This behavior seems to be concerned mainly with residual stress relaxation by applied loading. After analyzing the welding process, we conducted finite element analysis to quantify the degree of residual stress relaxation. By taking into account residual stress relaxation, modified Goodman diagram, and nominal stress, we evaluated the fatigue life of the welded joint from the S-N curve for the parent material. The estimated results are in a good agreement with the experimental results.
