The static and dynamic behaviour of VGT and EGR systems has a significant impact on overall engine performance, fuel economy and exhaust emissions. This is because they define the state and composition of the air charge entering the engine. This work focused on the effect of the aperture ratio of VGT and EGR on the emission and flow characteristics under partial loads conditions. The investigation carried out using 2 liter PCCI 4 cylinder diesel engine with VGT and EGR. The result of this study shows that smoke increases with increasing EGR rate and NOx decreases with increasing EGR rate. It was also found that the residual gas contents greatly impact on soot emission under partial load condition. Finally, it can be concluded that VGT and EGR aperture ratio can greatly impact not only on soot and NOx but also air charging.
A surface acoustic wave method for the evaluation of small fatigue crack initiated from a pit-type surface flaw is presented. In-situ ultrasonic experiments are performed for aluminum 2024-T3 alloy samples under the fatigue test. During the fatigue test, the surface acoustic wave reflection signal from the pit and crack is measured under different hold-stress levels. From the measured and predicted surface wave reflections the depths of fully and partially open cracks are determined and results are verified by comparing with SEM fractography The crack opening behavior of the fatigue crack is evaluated from the predicted effective crack depths. The method developed in this study can be applied to monitor and characterize crack initiation and propagation from pit-type surface flaws in the early stage of fatigue life.
Fuel cells are currently attracting tremendous interest because of their huge potential in stationary applications, in terms of substantiality of our energy use. They also offer environmental advantages, combining significantly higher efficiency with very much lower emission of SOx, NOx, and residual hydrocarbons, and significantly reduced $CO_{2}$ emissions compared to conventional power generation. The molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) was introduced from Fuel Cell Energy(FCE), which the one MCFC was operating by LNG and the other was operating by ADG. The ADG contains normally CH4, CO2 and various impurities such as sulfur compounds and siloxanes. Using the ADG as a fuel, MCFC have the potential to provide significant environmental and economic benefits. However, such impurities would be harmful to fuel cells. In this work, a purification process for the ADG was designed and installed in order to utilize the gas as a fuel for MCFC.

Window is a critical component in the design of energy-efficient buildings. To minimize the heat loss, insulation performance of the glazing has to be improved. Manufacturing of vacuum glazing has been motivated by the possibility of making windows of very good thermal insulation properties for such applications. It is made by maintaining vacuum in the gap between two glass panes. Pillars are placed between them to withstand the atmospheric pressure. Edge covers are applied to reduce conduction through the edge. Accurate measurements have been made of the radiative heat transfer, the pillar conduction and the gas conduction using a guarded hot plate apparatus. Vacuum glazing is found to have low thermal conductance roughly below $1W/m^2K$. Among the heat transfer modes of residual gas conduction, conduction through support pillar and the radiative heat transfer between the glass panes, the last one is the most dominant to the overall thermal conductance. Vacuum glazing using very low emittance AI-coated glass has an overall thermal conductance of about $0.7W/m^2K$.
For commercialization of polymer electrolytemembrane fuel cell (PEMFC), durability of membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) has to be improved. Especially, long-term stability of MEA is one of the most important issues for frequent shut-down and start-up processes of PEMFC. The degradation of MEA could be attributed to chemical attack of hydrogen peroxide radicals that are formed at high cell voltages without any special treatment to remove residual hydrogen from anode gas channel after shut-down of the fuel cell. In this study, we investigated the long-term stability of MEA under different on/off operation conditions. Residential hydrogen gas was removed from the anode flow channel by purging air or nitrogen. Also, a dummy resistance was applied to the fuel cell to exhaust residential hydrogen at the anode. In these cases, MEA showed much more stable durability. Electrochemical characteristics of the fuel cell were measured byrepeating the on/off cycles with the hydrogen removal processes. Also, degradation of MEA components was examined by SEM, TEM and XRD analyses.
Wool tropical and nylon taffeta were treated with low temperature plasma of $O_2$, $N_2$, NH$_3$, CF$_4$ and CH$_4$ for the intervals of 10 to 300 sec, and then dyed with leveling and milling type acid dyes in presence or absence of buffer solution. From the color depth of dyed fabrics, effect of plasma gases, treated time, dyeing time and temperature on dyeing property was studied. The results of the experiment can be summarized as follows: 1) The plasma treatments except methane gas increased the color depth of dyed wool fabrics, but not that of dyed nylon fabrics regardless of the plasma gases used. 2) The color depth of wool fabrics dyed in the dye bath without buffer solution was increased by the low temperature plasma, especially increased much more by CF$_4$ plasma treatment. It is found that with the identification of F- ion in the residual dye bath the hydrogen fluoride gas was adsorbed on wool fabrics in the plasma treatment. 3) The color depth of wool fabrics was increased with the time of $O_2$ and CF$_4$ plasma treatments. 4) In both cases of the leveling and milling type acid dyes, the rate of dyeing was increased in the low temperature plasma treatments, and it is found that the leveling type acid dye increased the color depth at relatively low temperature below 4$0^{\circ}C$, compared with the milling type acid dye.

AC-plasma display panels were examined before and after the aging process to analyze the effect of the aging process. The gas analysis was done to detect the impurity gases out of the MgO film and phosphor by a residual gas analyzer. There were no differences found in the components. The MgO film was analyzed to find out the effect of an ion bombardment due to discharge. The surface roughness of the MgO film was different from regional groups due to the different degree of ion bombardments. XPS analysis showed that the 8 hour aging process was not sufficient to remove $Mg(OH)_2$ and $MgCO_3$ existed on the MgO surface. Photoluminescence measurement showed the small deterioration of blue and green phosphor.
We invesgated the fesibility of thin films deposition by pyrolysis of metalorganic precursors using chemical beam deposition (CBD) process. We attempted to understand the effects of deposition variables such as substrate temperature operating pressure effusion cell temperature and H2 partial pressure on the properties of MgF2 grown by CBD. Mg(tfac)2 was used as a precursor. MgF2 thin films were always grown in an amorphous state and crystallized bypost-annealing. he higher the substrate temperature and the lower the operating pressure the less the impurities I the deposited MgF2 thin films. H2 gas has to be supplied for the pyrolitic reaction of Mg(tfac)2 decomposition. MgF2 films annealed in H2 have lower C impurity than those annealed in O2. But their crysatllinity was independent of annealing atmosphere. The optimum conditions for the prepara-tion of MgF2 films by CBD process were as following : The substrate temperature 55$0^{\circ}C$ the operating pressure 10-4 torr; effusion cell temperature 21$0^{\circ}C$ the percentage of H2 100% Post-annealing in H2 gas was required to remove residual carbon and to form MgF2 crystalline phase.

Three new granular absorbents were prepared from calcium hydroxide, and applied to an FGD process with internal circulation. The aim of the study was finding the most efficient of the these three applied absorbents for the $SO_2$ removal at high flue gas temperatures. The absorbent is fed to the testing unit at high operation temperature and fluidized inside the FGD system where the sorbent particles react with the $SO_2$ gas. The rate of $SO_2$ decomposition was high in C-type absorbent which had the large surface area. De-SOx characteristics of the current absorbents appeared to be similar to the other conventional agents in this fluidized bed combustor. In particular, the optimum de-SOx condition could be achieved at high mole ratios of Ca to S which can reduce the residual $SO_2$.
Welding is very popular method for joining two or more metals. However, welding causes residual stress and distortion and these give a bad influence to the structure strength. In this paper, TIG welding technique was performed to investigate the joint characteristics of AISI321 steel. For its evaluation, the orthogonal array method and variance analysis were applied with three factors of electric current, travel speed and argon gas and also three levels of each factor to tensile tests for optimum design. From the results, the increaser weld speed the narrower bead width and the lower weld penetration. The increaser electric current the brighter argon gas and the wider bead width. Also weld speed influenced most on the tensile strength and presumption range of tensile strength at optimal condition from reliability 95% was estimated to $635.02{\pm}14.64$. In addition the increaser weld speed and electric current the fracture occurred around bead vicinity.
