The objectives of study were 1) to investigate the motives for moving to the current residence, 2) to analyze residential satisfaction after moving in relation to household characteristics and the motives for moving, and 3) to test relationships among household characteristics, residential satisfaction before moving, motives for moving, and residential satisfaction after moving. Residential satisfaction was evaluated in relation to housing, neighborhood, and socio-psychological environments. Methdo-logy included literature and questionnaire survey. Questionnaires were administered to 269 homemakers living in an apartment complex in seoul. Data were analyzed with the use of SPSSS PC+ computer package. The motives for moving were classified in five types: tenureship improvement, improvement of the physical condition of housing, improvement of neighborhood environment, commuting improvement, and constraints. There were significant differences in the types of motives for moving by socio-economic status, types of houses lived in previously, change in type of tenures, and the duration of residence before moving. There were significant differences in residential satisfaction after moving among types of houses lived in previously, change in type of tenures, and the types of the motives for moving. There were significant relationships among residential satisfaction variables. They were the socio-economic status, change in type of tenures, residential satisfaction before moving.
With the development of cognitive science and environmental psychology, there have been growing researches and discussions on the relationship between the residential design preferences and personality types. MBTI personality types have been earning popular credibility. MBTI means Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. It is based on Carl Jung's theory of psychological type. This study is based on Myers-Briggs theory to explain residential furnishing preference and explores the relationship between the four bi-polar personality types-Extroversion/Introversion, Sensing/Intuition, Thinking/Perceiving and residential furnishing preference. These tests were conducted to two hundred and twelve adult residents who live in Seoul, Korea. These tests were analyzed several significances by Chi-Square with SPSS for windows software. (E) Extroverted residents prefer layouts for interaction with guests. (I) Introverted residents prefer centripetal layout around the bed. (S) Sensing residents prefer practical and functional layouts. (N) Intuitive residents prefer personal and conceiving layouts. (T) Thinking residents prefer for attribute of space. (F) Feeling residents for familiar conversation. (J) Judging residents prefer systematic and complete layouts. (P) Perceiving residents prefer adaptable and flexible layouts. In conclusion, personality types can have a determining role in preference of residential furnishing layouts. This study suggests that residential designers should take into account clients' personality types prefer effective designing and should provide a variety of alternatives reflecting clients' preferences. This will promote clients' pleasantness and satisfaction in dwelling at home.
Recently, as people have more interest in health, and some change takes place in their lifestyles, a demand for environment-friendly residential space is also increasing. Research on the introduction of natural elements is mostly conducted for humans to pursue a more pleasant and comfortable life in residential space since it has one of the closest relation with humans. Therefore, it is such an important assignment at present when environmental problems are considered significant. Based on such a necessity, this study analyzed the introduction types and characteristics of natural elements in residential space by considering essential and psychological aspects more than previous researches on residential space with practical and functional aspects. As natural elements, this study put limits on plants and water that are used a lot in the interior space, and by dividing introduction types into recomposition of courtyard space, spatial partition and decorative elements, this study carried out a case analysis of residential space structures recently completed in Japan. As a basic research on space planning that is desperately required by change in the residential life paradigm and on the basis of understanding about nature, it is expected that the results of this study will be used as design basic data useful when establishing plans of introducing natural elements for residential space in the future.
The aim of this paper is to examine the determinants of residential satisfaction and attachment according to the urban multi-family dwelling types. On the basis of the surveys, the factor analysis and regression are employed as the empirical analysis on residential satisfaction and attachment in Daegu metropolitan city. The major findings are as follows; First, as for post-occupancy evaluation of residential environment of building and outside, the residents of complex type of multi-family housing satisfied with most of items more than studio type except the location, amenity facilities around building and utilities fee. Second, about the Residential Satisfaction and Attachment by types, the residents of complex type of multi-family housing satisfied with most of items more than studio type too. Third, the determinants in residential Satisfaction of complex types are 'welfare and amenity facilities factor', 'maintenance factor' and 'location factor'. On the other hand, the determinants in residents of studio type are 'inexpensive rent fee factor', 'welfare and amenity facilities factor' and 'maintenance factor'. Going forward, this research will help us better understand residential satisfaction from the point of residents and find new ways to improve resident satisfaction and attachment.
This study deals with apartments, the representative form of residence in Korea, and analyzes the residential plane of 30-pyong apartments that are constructed by the 5 construction companies within in the past three years. It is discovered that these apartments show a certain form and that developing the frame work of interior elements according to the characteristics of family types of 30-pyong apartment residents and the process for such a frame work are needed. Therefore, by analyzing the differences of residential forms according to resident types, this investigation tries to approach the design centering around users. To summarize the steps and contents of this study, first, it draws the understanding and the study field of common residential space, second, it shows the characteristics of family types within residential space, third, it analyzes and verifies the differences of characteristics according to family types within the representative size and form of plane. This investigation is aimed to provide the reasons for developing different planes according to family types despite they may be of the same size, to show the frame of the study method for developing the plane design and the interior element design for users and to suggest the way of designing residence in a conditional approach applying the conditions of users within common residential space.
This study analyses the relationships between the residents'personality and the residential types, and between the sense of crowding and the residential types. For this purpose, this study surveys two hundred ninety three residents in their thirties and forties, residing in Seoul. We find that there are differences in the personality traits and also differences in the sense of crowding according to residential types such as high-rise/low-rise apartments, high-class private residence, multi-family houses. And these differences are due to the differences of inner and outer residential environment satisfaction. The lower a resident's inner environment satisfaction is, the higher is his/her sense of crowding. And low environment satisfaction and high sense of crowding appears to account for one's depression and anxiety. Conversely, the higher environment satisfaction is and the lower the sense of crowding is, the higher is his/her responsibility. Finally, this study tries to examine how each personality trait changes according to the habitancy duration. We find that residents having a 3-5 year habitancy record are more anxious and depressed than those who have been living more than 7 years in the same residence.
One of the most important functions of a building is to provide thermally comfortable indoor environmental conditions for the occupants. Therefore, a great deal of energy is consumed for heating and cooling to satisfy those thermal requirements. In order to provide thermal comfort with minimum heating and cooling energy consumption, optimal design of building affecting indoor climate is required. This study used the TRNSYS for modeling and simulation of the energy flows of residential building types, and examined the energy efficient measures to reduce the thermal loads. The residential building types are classified into the detached house, apartment house and high-rise residential complex. The results of the simulation show that the heating energy consumption in the detached house is especially high, whereas the cooling load is an important determinant in the apartment house and high-rise residential complex. The measures examined are the insulation thickness, various types of glazing, infiltration, natural and controlled ventilation, solar shading, orientation and etc. Comparative evaluations and sensitivity analyses revealed the effects of these variables and identified their energy efficient building design strategies.

To make a prediction for a change of residential environment caused by the building code in Seoul which includes loosening the distance between multi-residential buildings, proposals of the four main building arrangements by analyzing examples were selected and then, amount of daylight and view efficiency were analyzed and presented through computer simulation for the proposals. In the result of the analysis, there was a difference among the arrangements but, when the distance between buildings was applied 0.8H as the least, residential environment like daylight and view efficiency per unit significantly decreased in quality. Particularly, for the middle stories(6-15) and the high stories(16~24), when the distance between buildings decreased from the current measurement, 1.0H, to 0.8H, the analysis indicated that 28% of daylight and 7% of view efficiency were reduced. In the building arrangements, an order of the best residential environment was followed in this sequence; balanced arrangement of flat type as the best, combined arrangement between L-shape and tower types, balanced arrangement of tower type, combined arrangement between flat and Y-shape types, grid arrangement of flat type, and combined arrangement between Y-shape and tower types as the least.
