  • In this study, temperature, turbidity, suspended paniculate matter (SPM) distribution and mineral characteristics were investigated to explain spatial distribution of the turbid-water environment of Yongdam reservoir in July, 2005. Six stations were selected along a longitudinal axis of the reservoir and sampling was conducted in four depths of each station. Water temperature was showed the typical stratified structure by the effects of irradiance and inflow. Content of inorganic matter in suspended particles increased with the concentration of suspended particulate matter (SPM) due to the reduction of ash-free dry matter (AFDM). Turbidity ranged from 0.6 to 95.1 NTU and the maximum turbidity value of each station sharply increased toward downstream from upstream. The high turbidity layers were located at the depth between 12~16 m. Particle size ranged from 0.435 to $482.9{\mu}m$. day and silt-sized particles corresponded 91.9~98.9% and 1.1~8.0% in total numbers of SPM, respectively. Turbidity showed high correlations with clay (r=0.763, p<0.05) and silt content (r=0.870, p<0.05).Inorganic matter content (r=0.960, p<0.01) was more correlated with turbidity than organic matter (r=0.823, p<0.05). Mineral characterization using x-ray diffraction and electron probe microanalyzer demonstrated that the major minerals contained in the SPM were kaolinite, illite, vermiculite and smectite. As results of this study, surface water discharge as well as small size of the SPM were suggested as long-term interfering factors in settling down the turbid water in the reservoir.

  • BACKGROUND: For effective subwatershed management, it is very important to select the tributaries for improving water quality and understand the characteristics of tributaries. Until now, however, the case study of main streams has been managed. 17 tributaries in Geum river subwatershed were monitored to regulate the source of water contaminations and identify their current situations in this study. METHODS AND RESULTS: As pollution indicators, such as biological oxygen demand($BOD_5$), chemical oxygen demand($COD_{Mn}$), suspended solid(SS), total nitrogen (T-N), total phosphate(T-P) and total organic carbon(TOC) in Geum river were examined from January to December in 2011. The results were as follows : The annual average concentration of nutrients in Yongdam reservoir upsteam was 0.7 mg/L for BOD, 3.0 mg/L for COD, 8.4 mg/L for SS, 2.905 mg/L for T-N, 0.035 mg/L for T-P and 1.6 mg/L for TOC. Water quality of Daechung reservoir upstream was mostly similar tendency in comparison to Yongdam reservoir upstream. Among the 22 tributaries, water quality in Daechung reservoir downstream was more polluted. T-N contents were significantly high in Miho B4 located Daechung reservoir downstream(annual average concentration: 13.53 mg/L). In cases of Miho A1, A2 and C1, pollution degree was worsened during rainy season expecially. CONCLUSION(S): For improving water quality of Geum river subwatershed, the tributaries in the Mihocheon area should be preferentially considered. Mihocheon tributary is the highest in pollution site, and thus a study on long-term effects should be research.

  • In a deep lake and reservoir, thermal stratification is of great importance for characteristics of hydrodynamic mixing of the waterbody, and thereby influencesvertical distribution of dissolved oxygen, substances, nutrients, and the phytoplankton community. The purpose of this study, was to project the effect of a future climate change scenario on water temperature, stratification strength, and thermal stability in the Soyanggang Reservoir in the Han River basin of South Korea, using a suite of mathematical models; SWAT, HEC-ResSim, and CE-QUAL-W2(W2). W2 was calibrated with historical data observed 2005-2015. Using climate data generated by HadGEM2-AO with the RCP 4.5 scenario, SWAT predicted daily reservoir inflow 2016-2070, and HEC-ResSim simulated changes in reservoir discharge and water level, based on inflow and reservoir operation rules. Then, W2 was applied, to predict long-term continuous changes of water temperature, in the reservoir. As a result, the upper layer (5 m below water surface) and lower layer (5 m above bottom) water temperatures, were projected to rise $0.0191^{\circ}C/year$(p<0.05) and $0.008^{\circ}C/year$(p<0.05), respectively, in response to projected atmospheric temperature rise rate of $0.0279^{\circ}C/year$(p<0.05). Additionally, with increase of future temperature, stratification strength of the reservoir is projected to be stronger, and the number of the days when temperature difference of the upper layer and the lower layer becomes greater than $5^{\circ}C$, also increase. Increase of water temperature on the surface of the reservoir, affected seasonal growth rate of the algae community. In particular, the growth rate of cyanobacteria increased in spring, and early summer.

  • This study is to determine an optimal reservoir among many alternative proposals in order to obtain the maximized efficiency under the limited budget. There are many alternative proposals which deal with problems to assign reservoir such as water conversion establishment construction, subterranean water, reservoir, submarine pipeline, water boat, and marine water saving base construction. In this paper, the new model to assign the most reasonable alternative is introduced using 0-1 integer programming. This proposed model has not been applied in the optimal reservoir selection problem yet. This paper will contribute to determine the most reasonable alternative to minimize budget under constraints. Also, this proposal model can be applied to other reservoir selection problem in other regions.

  • There have been growing concerns of algal growth at Daecheong reservoir due to eutrophication with excess nutrient inflow. Rainfall-driven runoff and pollutant from watershed are responsible for eutrophication of the Daecheong reservoir. In this study, two subwatersheds of the Daecheong reservoir were selected and water quality characteristics were analyzed. The L-THIA ArcView GIS model was used for evaluation of direct runoff and water quality. The $R^2$ and the EI value for direct runoff were 0.95 and 0.93 at Wol-oe watershed and were 0.81, 0.71 at An-nae watershed, respectively. The $R^2$ for SS, T-P were 0.53, 0.95 at Wol-oe watershed and 0.89, 0.89 at An-nae watershed, respectively. It has been proven that the L-THIA ArcView GIS model could be used for evaluating direct runoff and pollutant load from the watershed with reasonable accuracies.

  • The chemical and biological reaction of the aquatic organism is closely related with temperature variation and water temperature is one of the most important factors that should be considered in establishing sustainable reservoir operation scheme to minimize adverse environmental impacts related with dam construction. This paper investigates temperature variation in the downstream of Yongdam Reservoir using sampled data collected from total 8 temperature monitoring stations placed along the main river and the major tributaries. Using KoRiv1, 1-dimensional dynamic water quality simulation model, temperature variation in the downstream of Yongdam Reservoir has been simulated. The simulated results were compared with sampled data collected from May 15 to August 1 2008 by applying two different temperature modeling schemes, equilibrium temperature and full heat budget method. From the result of statistical analysis, seasonal temperature variation has been simulated by applying the equilibrium temperature scheme for comparison of the difference between the reservoir operation and the natural conditions.

  • A sedimentation basin (SB) at the inlet of an irrigation reservoir which was constructed using an auxiliary dam was monitored to evaluate its pollutant removal efficiency. Water sampling at three points, i.e., inflow stream, upstream and downstream of the reservoir, were taken 5 times before and after the construction of the SB in 1999 and 2003, respectively. No significant water quality variations in inflow stream were observed during these periods. The COD, T-N, T-P and SS removal efficiencies were 38, 24, 35 and 49%, respectively. The results indicated that those removal efficiencies significantly increased during the rainy season and COD removal efficiency, especially, was higher than others studies. The scale of SB in this study was rational as aspects of pollutant removal efficiency and hydraulic detention time. And it is recommended that SB, at inlet of an reservoir, should be constructed as completely separated structure from reservoir water body and having SAR Index from 0.7% to 1.0%.

  • Water quality and plankton community dynamics after the introduction of two domestic freshwater shellfishes (Unio douglasiae Griffith & Pidgeon and Cipangoplaudina chinese malleata Reeve), were monitored daily in enclosures, which constructed in the tidal zone of eutrophic agricultural reservoir (Shingu reservoir, Korea) for one week between July 31 and August 6, 2007. This biomanipulation study to improve the water quality of eutrophic lake, comprised eight enclosures (duplicate x four kinds), enclosure had no mussels (Control), stocked only with U. douglasiae at density of 60 individuals (UD), stocked only with C. chinese malleata at density of 60 individuals (CCM), and combined-stocked with 30 individuals of UD and 30 individuals of CCM (MIX), respectively. Our results clearly indicate that UD strongly decreased the concentration of chlorophyll-a and increased the water transparency, whereas CCM and MIX (included CCM) did increase algal density or decrease transparency, due perhaps to the disturbance of C. chinese malleata. Therefore, the field application of shellfish to enhance the water quality of eutrophic agricultural reservoir, should consider the grazing characteristics of biological control agents, especially active moving animals like snail.

  • The objectives for this study were to evaluate spatial and temporal characteristics of water quality, based on long-term water quality monitoring data during 1993~2008. We found that physico-chemical and ecological conditions in the Daecheong Reservoir (DR) were modified by the construction of upper dam (i.e., Yongdam Reservoir). total phosphorus (TP), Secchi depth (SD), and chlorophyll-a (CHL) in the DR showed significant longitudinal decreases along the headwater-to-the downlake, indicating a large spatial variation, and this gradient was more intensified during the high-flow season (monsoon). Nutrient-rich water containing high nitrogen and phosphorus in the monsoon season (July~August) passed through the reservoir as a density current in the metalimnetic depth, and also high suspended solids increased in the metalimnetic depth, especially during the monsoon. According to the deviation analysis of Trophic State Index (TSI), >50% of TSI (CHL)-TSI (SD) and TSI (CHL)-TSI (TP) values were negatives, so that inorganic suspended solids (non-votatile solids) influenced the underwater light regime against phytoplankton growth. Also, ratios of CHL:TP after the dam construction evidently increased, compared to the values before the upper dam constructions, indicating a greater yield of phytoplankton in the unit phosphorus. Overall data showed that ecological and functional changes in Daecheong Reservoir occurred after the construction of upper dam (Yongdam Reservoir).
