  • Unmet healthcare needs do not end with the phenomenon itself, but lead to possibilities of increased severity of illness. Missed opportunities for treatment at the right timing increase possibilities of complications, and affect prognosis of disease. To examine current status and trends of unmet needs in Korea, we used data from four sources: the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHNES, '2007-2016); the Community Health Survey (CHS '2008-2016); the Korea Health Panel Survey (KHP '2011-2014); and the Korean Welfare Panel Study (KOWEPS '2006-2016). The proportion of individual reporting unmet healthcare needs as of 2016 was 8.8% (KNHNES), 11.5% (CHS), and 12.8% (KHP, as of 2014). Annual percentage change which characterizes trend for the follow-up period was -9.9%, -3.1%, and -1.3%, respectively. The proportion of individuals reporting unmet healthcare needs due to cost was 1.8% (KNHNES), 1.5% (CHS), and 3.0% (KHP). The proportion of households reporting unmet healthcare needs due to cost was 1.0% (KOWEPS). Annual percentage change was -10.0%, -15.2%, -5.4%, and -17.5%, respectively. Low income populations had more unmet healthcare needs than high income populations. Therefore, in order to improve unmet healthcare needs, it is necessary to focus on low income populations.

  • This study examined the extent of information needs regarding convenience store private brand (PB) foods and variables affecting information needs for convenience store PB foods. This study will be able to provide useful information based on determining the information content and information sources needed by undergraduate consumers for convenience store PB foods. Data analyses were conducted by frequency, mean (SD), reliability tests, and multiple regression with SPSS version 19.0. The major results of this study are as follows: First, undergraduate consumers' purchase intention toward convenience store PB foods is comparatively high, and they say they will buy the products if the PB foods' quality-related areas like taste, nutrition, or safety are favorable. Second, the general level of information needs for convenience store PB foods is comparatively high, and among general information needs, 'information needs for convenience store PB food quality' are the greatest, while in the area of comparative information needs, 'comparative information on PB food and NB food quality' is needed the most. In addition, undergraduate consumers most often want to obtain convenience store PB food information from convenience stores themselves. Third, as purchase intention and information acceptance of convenience store PB foods increase, information needs also increase. However, as quality perception of convenience store PB foods is more positive, information needs reduce.

  • As the institutions of the Day Care services in Korea have merely focused on developing the issues for caring and education of children, however, other principles in the Day Care services have not been properly delivered. So, it is necessary for the institutions delivering Day Care services to approach inclusively above four perspectives to the broad sense of the child welfare because the institutions for Day care services are dealing with the groups of the parents, who are in difficulty to take care of their children, and the needs of the parents in terms of caring for their children. The study focuses to research the groups of children, which have various and mixed needs and the problems. On the other hand, the socio-economic attributes, the needs and the problems of the groups of the parents are looked for in the research. As the result of the research, the needs for Day Care services are differentiated from the different socio-economic backgrounds of the parents group. The data indicates that the low class families demands more needs than those of the middle class in the research of the categories. Analyzing from the result, the categories of caring, health care, nutritional supplements, extracurricular activities, emotional supports, providing information and referrals and community social services are hard to be defined as the necessary services based on the ages of the children. It is better to be defined as the necessary services demanding from the social needs of the parent group. Thus, the target groups such as the working couple and the low income families should be primarily considered as the beneficiary groups receiving the comprehensive day care services.

  • In the process of devising an efficient meal service system for the elderly, 478 elderly were interviewed at 6 different social centers with the elderly meal service program in Seoul area to monitor degree of satisfaction and/or needs of the beneficiaries regarding the program. The survey was conducted during the month of December 2002 by well-trained interviewers using self-developed questionnaire. Results were analyzed statistically using SAS package program. Most of the beneficiaries were low economic class and 76% of them had doctor diagnosed disease(s). Among the beneficiaries of congregate meal service, mean score of 12 aspects of satisfaction was 3.72 out of 5. For most of the questions, female elderly and healthy elderly responded with higher score than male elderly and unhealthy elderly, respectively (p<0.05, p<0.01). On the other hand, beneficiaries of the home-delivered meal service were little bit less satisfied with the service (3.54 out of 5). Compared to the beneficiaries of congregate meal service, larger portion of beneficiaries of home-delivered meal service wanted more meats (28.5 % vs. 17.1 %) and vegetables (23.2 % vs. 12.3 %) as side dishes. On the other hand, the most preferred type of cooking and/or seasoning was stewing for both cases. Based on these findings, it is suggested that more fresh foods should be used than processed foods in the preparation of meals for the elderly and, more fish-, meat- and vegetable- dishes should be served to come up to the needs of the elderly. Onto this, mainly Korean style meals with some intermittent Western, Japanese or Chinese style meals served at the right temperature would suffice most of the elderly needs.

  • The proportion of people who reported unmet healthcare needs is an important indicator to measure the access problem in healthcare service. To examine current status and trends of unmet needs in Korea, we used data from four sources: the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHNES, '2007-2015); the Community Health Survey (CHS '2008-2015); the Korea Health Panel Survey (KHP '2011-2013); the Korean Welfare Panel Study (KOWEPS '2006-2015). The proportion of individual reporting unmet healthcare needs as of 2015 was 12.6% (KNHNES), 11.7% (CHS), and 16.3% (KHP, as of 2013). Annual percent change which characterizes trend for follow-up period was -9.4%, -3.4%, and 7.6%, respectively. The proportion of individual reporting unmet healthcare needs due to cost was 2.8% (KNHNES), 1.7% (CHS), and 4.6% (KHP). The proportion of household reporting unmet healthcare needs due to cost was 1.2% (KOWEPS). Annual percent change was -9.0%, -14.9%, 9.4%, and -18.2%, respectively. Low income population reported about 5 times more unmet needs than high income population. Therefore for decreasing the unmet healthcare needs, strategies focusing on low income population were needed.

  • Purpose: This research was conducted to identify long-term care service needs in the baby boom generation. Methods: Data were collected from September 3 to October 9, 2012 targeting 196 baby boomers residing in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do with the measurement of long-term care service needs having five domains. Collected data were analyzed using the SPSS 20.0 program. Results: Demand for long term care service in those who preferred nursing homes was highest as $4.40{\pm}0.69$ in the safe environment domain. In case of those preferring home care services, demand was highest as $4.37{\pm}0.56$ in the social interaction domain. People who preferred nursing homes had higher needs in personal health care and improvement of the service quality domains. Those who preferred home care services showed diverse needs according to their characteristics. Conclusion: The baby boom generation had high needs in all the domains of long-term care services and such needs were diverse according to their characteristics. However, long-term care services had limitations that they provided standardized and uniformed services only. Therefore, health care services and improved quality services should be provided in a way of meeting the users' needs, and tailored services should be provided in consideration of the users' characteristics.
