  • Empirical applications to explain criminogenic events are abundant. While much of the research in criminal studies concentrates on understanding the motivations of offenders and preventing victimization from a micro perspective, there have been recent theoretical advancements that give priority to the role of spatial factors in directly impacting crime rates. The primary purpose of this study is to investigate the empirical inference between violent crime incidence and spatial characteristics of local areas focusing particularly on spatial accessibility conditions in the areas. Applying discrete spatial econometrics models, this study reveals a significant relationship between spatial accessibility and the formation of violent crime hot spots in South Korea. Along with other variables, it is revealed that road accessibility has a clear association with violent crime hot spots. Based on the findings, this study suggests some policy implications such as effective surveillance systems, land use restrictions, and advanced street lighting.

  • Multi-objective optimization problems (MOPs) arise in many real-world applications. MOPs involve two or more objectives with the aim to be optimized. With these problems improvement of one objective may led to deterioration of another. The primary goal of most multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEA) is to generate a set of solutions for approximating the whole or part of the Pareto optimal front, which could provide decision makers a good insight to the problem. Over the last decades or so, several different and remarkable multi-objective evolutionary algorithms, have been developed with successful applications. However, MOEAs are still in their infancy. The objective of this research is to study how to use and apply machine learning (ML) to improve evolutionary multi-objective optimization (EMO). The EMO method is the multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition (MOEA/D). The MOEA/D has become one of the most widely used algorithmic frameworks in the area of multi-objective evolutionary computation and won has won an international algorithm contest.

  • With the advancement in the Internet of things Technology (IoT) cloud computing, billions of physical devices have been interconnected for sharing and collecting data in different applications. Despite many advancements, some latency - specific application in the real world is not feasible due to existing constraints of IoT devices and distance between cloud and IoT devices. In order to address issues of latency sensitive applications, fog computing has been developed that involves the availability of computing and storage resources at the edge of the network near the IoT devices. However, fog computing suffers from many limitations such as heterogeneity, storage capabilities, processing capability, memory limitations etc. Therefore, it requires an adequate task scheduling method for utilizing computing resources optimally at the fog layer. This work presents a comprehensive review of different task scheduling methods in fog computing. It analyses different task scheduling methods developed for a fog computing environment in multiple dimensions and compares them to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of methods. Finally, it presents promising research directions for fellow researchers in the fog computing environment.

  • The field of extracellular vesicles (EVs) has expanded tremendously over the last decade. The role of cell-to-cell communication in neighboring or distant cells has been increasingly ascribed to EVs generated by various cells. Initially, EVs were thought to a means of cellular debris or disposal system of unwanted cellular materials that provided an alternative to autolysis in lysosomes. Intercellular exchange of information has been considered to be achieved by well-known systems such as hormones, cytokines, and nervous networks. However, most research in this field has searched for and found evidence to support paracrine or endocrine roles of EV, which inevitably leads to a new concept that EVs are synthesized to achieve their paracrine or endocrine purposes. Here, we attempted to verify the endocrine role of EV production and their contents, such as RNAs and bioactive proteins, from the regulation of biogenesis, secretion, and action mechanisms while discussing the current technical limitations. It will also be important to discuss how blood EV concentrations are regulated as if EVs are humoral endocrine machinery.

  • We live in a digital age. Smartphones are used by everyone from children to the elderly. And many smart devices are pouring out and changing our daily life a lot. However, even in the development of this digital age, there are some marginalized groups. There are also those who are reluctant to expose their information in the digital age. They have difficulty making reservations on their smartphones, using payment systems, logging into the site using various authentication and verification procedures, and entering and leaving buildings. We still carry most IDs, seals, certificates, etc. in physical form. Those who use smartphones are enjoying the convenience of the times. However, among the underprivileged, the desire to pass everything with only one device is growing. In this study, the most suitable smart band model was proposed by collecting the Delphi survey and the opinions of the general public. Future research is required to improve practical usability and utility by developing cheaper and more convenient models.

  • Due to their high degree of freedom to transfer and acquire light, fiber optics can be used in the presence of strong magnetic fields. Hence, optical sensing and imaging based on fiber optics can be integrated with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) diagnostic systems to acquire valuable information on biological tissues and organs based on a magnetic field. In this article, we explored the combination of MRI and optical sensing/imaging techniques by classifying them into the following topics: 1) functional near-infrared spectroscopy with functional MRI for brain studies and brain disease diagnoses, 2) integration of fiber-optic molecular imaging and optogenetic stimulation with MRI, and 3) optical therapeutic applications with an MRI guidance system. Through these investigations, we believe that a combination of MRI and optical sensing/imaging techniques can be employed as both research methods for multidisciplinary studies and clinical diagnostic/therapeutic devices.

  • As the significance of quality in the sense of customer satisfaction is growing, the management of quality becomes one of the main interests in the manufacturing systems research. This paper presents the concept of quality-driven CIM(Computer Integrated Manufacturing) system which is composed of a business process domain and a quality domain. In the business process domain, business functions are integrated by conventional design and manufacturing databases on the one hand, and an integrated quality system is interlinked to them via several quality modules on the other hand. Quality information model connects the business process domain with the quality domain where various types of quality data are stored in the form of quality database. This framework helps a manufacturing enterprise to implement the quality-driven CIM system to achieve its final objective "customer satisfaction".ion".uot;.

  • A microcomputer -based data acquistion system was designed and developed at Michigan State University , USA to conduct field data studies. The system designed for the research carried out used an Apple IIe microcomputer for collecting data on-board the tractor. An AII3 Analog to Digital (A/D_ convertor was chosen to interface each analog signal to the microcomputer. A commercially available Dj TPM II was employed to display information such as an engine speed, ground speed, percent drive wheel slip , distance travelled and area covered per hour. The frequency output from the radar unit was channeled through a frequency to voltage (F/V) convertor , so that AII3 Analog to Digital (A/D) convertor could read it. The fuel consumption was measured using on EMCO pdp-1 fuel flow meter attached to the engine fuel line. The draft of the tillage and other drag equipment was determined using strain gages attached to the drawbar of the tractor. The system was developed to collect the draft and fuel requirements for various farm equipment different kind of soils.

  • With the development of technology, a new class of smaller and more sensitive electrical systems have emerged, requiring higher quality power system. Improving the quality of the power system requires removing harmonics as much as possible to ensure better efficiency. We should first collect information on what harmonic frequencies are included in the current power system to remove the harmonics. In this paper, a new frequency analysis algorithm is introduced for a three-phase and a 1-phase power system. MTE PRS 600.3 is used to generate any harmonics to ensure that the algorithm performs well. Typing any harmonics on the Windows GUI program shows the analyzed result from the board developed for the algorithm.
