  • The effects of the ectomycorrhizal fungus Pisolithus tinctorius and cadmium (Cd) on physiological properties and Cd uptake by Populus alba ${\times}$ glandulosa was investigated under greenhouse conditions. Cd treatment decreased the photosynthetic rate ($P_N$) of both non-mycorrhizal (NM) plants (16.3%) and ectomycorrhizal (ECM) plants (11.5%). In addition, the reduction in total dry weight by Cd treatment was greater in ECM plants (24.3%) than that in NM plants (17.6%). Mycorrhizal infection increased the $P_N$ and transpiration rate in both control and Cd-treated plants. Cd treatment increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and decreased glutathione reductase activity, and the increase of SOD activity by Cd treatment was greater in NM plants (40.3%) than that in ECM plants (3.7%). Thiol content increased in both NM and ECM plants treated with Cd solution, and the increase in thiol content in NM plants (43.9%) was greater than that of ECM plants (15.6%). Cd uptake in the leaves, stems, and roots of ECM plants was 69.9%, 167.2% and 72.8%, respectively, higher than in the NM plants. However, the increase in Cd uptake ability of ECM plants resulted in a reduction in dry weight.

  • The influence of adding urea to phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resins as a co-polymer component were investigated aiming at synthesizing useful phenol-urea-formaldehyde resins. Urea was added at 10% by total resin weight. Several methods for the addition of urea to the PF resins during synthesizing resins to see the co-polymerization occurs between urea and PF resins. The urea was added at the beginning, at three different middle stages, and at the end of PF resin synthesis. The copolymerized methylene bridges between phenol and urea molecules were not observed by $^{13}C-NMR;$ no signal around 50ppm. The curing of urea-modified PF resins, evaluated by dynamic mechanical analysis(DMA), showed some differences among the resins. DMA gel times ranged from 2.75 min to 3.25 min and the resins made with earlier urea additions showed slightly shorter gel times. The longest cure time and gelation time was observed for the resin PFU. Catalyst effects on the DMA cure time values of resins were not significant with different amounts of catalyst or different types of catalyst for all resins tested. Gel times of urea-modified PF resins shortened the most by triacetin catalyst.

  • This study investigates the tensile and morphological properties of nanocomposites prepared from poly(lactic acid) (PLA), wood flour (WF) and montmorillonite (MMT) by melt compounding with a twin screw extruder. In order to enhance the mechanical properties of PLA/WF composites, maleic anhydride grafted PLA (MAPLA) is synthesized as a compatibilizer. MAPLA prepared in the laboratory is characterized using FT-IR (Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy). From the results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis for nanocomposites, we confirmed that silicate layers of MMT are intercalated and partially exfoliated. When 2 wt% MAPLA is added, the tensile strength and modulus of PLA/WF/MAPLA composites were higher than those of the PLA/WF composite. The addition of MMT increases the tensile modulus of PLA/WF/MAPLA composites but decreases the tensile strength.

  • This study investigates the thermal properties of nanocomposites prepared from poly(lactic acid) (PLA), wood flour (WF) and montmorillonite (MMT) by melt compounding with a twin screw extruder. In order to enhance the mechanical properties of PLA/WF composites, maleic anhydride grafted PLA (MAPLA) is synthesized as a compatibilizer. MAPLA prepared in the laboratory is characterized using FR-IR. From SEM microphotographs, the presence of MAPLA has a positive effect on the mechanical properties of WF-reinforced PLA composites. The addition of WF/MAPLA into neat PLA increased the glass transition temperature ($T_g$). The addition of 1 to 5 wt% MMT into PLA/WF/MAPLA composite decreases the $T_g$. The cold crystallization temperature ($T_{cc}$) was decreased by the addition of MMT. The MMT could act as effective nucleating sites of PLA crystallization. The thermal stability evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is improved with the contents of MMT up to 3 wt%.

  • Intraspecific variation in morphometry of pine wood nematodes Bursaphelenchus xylophilus and B. mucronatus in relation to geographical locations in South Korea was investigated using morphometric characters (body length, a, b and c ratio, stylet length, and spicule length for a male nematode and V (%) value for a female nematode). B. xylophilus was isolated from Pinus thunbergii in Jinju (1998), Ulsan (2000), Yangsan (2000), Mokpo (2001) and Jeju (2004), and from P. densiflora in Gumi (2001). B. mucronatus was isolated from P. thunbergii in Jinju (1991) and from P. densiflora in Milyang (2001). The body length of male and female B. xylophilus had the highest coefficient of variability and showed significant differences among geographical locations. The V (%) value for female B. xylophilus showed the lowest coefficient of variability, changing little with geographical area and host plant. All morphometric characters in B. mucronatus except for stylet length and female body length showed no significant differences between locations or hosts, suggesting they may not be affected by geographical area or host plant.

  • Recently, public awareness regarding mountain villages' landscapes is increasing. Thus, this study aimed to provide standards for conservation, management and creation of mountain village landscape by characterizing and classifying those exist. 286 mountain villages' data were collected and 19 variables - extracted from GIS spatial information and statistic data of mountain villages, chosen as right sources according to former studies - were utilized to conduct factor and cluster analysis. As a result of the factor analysis, 7 characteristics of the mountain villages' landscapes were defined - 'Location', 'Cultivation', 'Ecology·Nature', 'Tourism', 'Residence', 'Recreation'. The K-means cluster analysis categorized the mountain villages' landscapes into four types - 'Residential', 'Touristic', 'General', 'Environmentally protected'. The classification was examined to be appropriate by field assessment, and basic guidelines of mountain village landscape management were set. The results of this study are expected to be utilized planning and implementing regarding mountain village landscape in the future.

  • This research deals with the combustion experiment of pine trees, which are the most representative species in Korea. Experimental data are compared with theoretical ones using Fire Simulation Program(FDS). It is considered that horizontal/vertical temperature distribution and radiant heat influence on adjacent areas in fire scenes. The linear function for separation distance to temperature was drawn by applying Stefan-Boltzmann's law; $y=112.13133{\times}({\sigma}T^4)^{-0.52916}$ for calculating the separation distance. In combustion experiment, the radiant heat came to $1.4{\sim}1.5kW/m^2$ in case of the separation distance by one meter. The numerical values mean that human body show the critical level of pain after one minute without a protective equipment.

  • This paper analyzed the characteristics of population change from 2000 to 2018 in 466 mountainous areas using resident registration data from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and projected the population in those areas through 2050 with the cohort change ratio method. The population had dramatically decreased from 2000 to 2009. With the slowing population decrease after 2010, the population has increased gradually since 2014. Especially the population of ages over 65 in 2018 had increased 34% compared to 2000, while the working age population had decreased 29%. This shows that population aging becomes serious problems in the mountainous area. Assuming the cohort change ratios from 2010 to 2015 and child-woman ratio in 2015 remain constant, it appeared that the projected population of the mountainous area dropped to 1.26 million in 2030 and 820,000 in 2050. It is expected to have a population with an inverted pyramid structure showing a gender imbalance with more females in 60's and 70's. Although it continues to show the recent population growth in mountainous area, population in mountainous area is expected to consistently decrease. Therefore, it is required to develop policies and strategies to promote an influx of people into mountainous area for maintaining functionality and sustainability of mountainous areas.
