Topography factors, as homeostasis variables at forest fire, affect the formation of fuel load patterns, atmospheric phenomena and forest fire behavior. Examination of the correlation between landforms and fire severity is important to decision making for fire hazard analysis and fighting strategies. In this study, fire severity was analyzed using Normalized Burn Ratio(NBR) derived from pre- and post-fire Landsat TM/+ETM images and landform were classified based on Topographic Position Index(TPI) in Samcheok(2000), Cheongyang(2002), and Yangyang(2005) forest fire regions. F-tests and Duncan's multi-range test between landform and fire severity showed that fire severities of headwater, high ridges, and upper slopes is higher than ones of local ridges, midslope ridges, and plains. Fire severity were more sensitive in coniferous forest than broadleaf forests.

Understanding the forest fire patterns is necessary to comprehend the stability of the forest ecosystems. Thus, researchers have suggested the simulation models to mimic the forest fire spread dynamics, which enables us to predict the forest damage in the scenarios that are difficult to be experimentally tested in laboratory scale. However, many of the models have the limitation that many of them did not consider the complicated environmental factors, such as fuel types, wind, and moisture. In this study, we suggested a simple model with the factors, especially, the geomorphological structure of the forest and two types of fuel. The two fuels correspond to susceptible tree and resistant tree with different probabilities of transferring fire. The trees were randomly distributed in simulation space at densities ranging from 0.5 (low) to 1.0 (high). The susceptible tree had higher value of the probability than the resistant tree. Based on the number of burnt trees, we then carried out the sensitivity analysis to quantify how the forest fire patterns are affected by the structure and tree density. We believe that our model can be a useful tool to explore forest fire spreading patterns.

This program was developed to operate and manage the massive digital forest cover type map using SDE(spatial database engine) in order to solve the problems of the analogue mapping system, mapping process and managing vast amounts of data. It was established the standardization process by performing the several functions of application related to the spatial DB search, mapping history and progress control, modification and inspection of the topology error, approval and reject of those maps. It can be possible to generate the effective mapping and distribute maps to the public service. It is expected that the results will be able to reduce time-cost.
This study was carried out to develop Tablet PC based customizing system for fine mapping of forest cover type. The major contents and characteristics of FIS developed in this study were as follows. Field Investigation System (FIS) has a merit of accessibility to display exact location in various spatial data with position information received from the GPS. FIS can be used to record and manage many field information on which field investigation is done, with the help of the memo tool, field-sheet tool, calculating distance and area with measuring tool as well as editing forest type. It is possible to do field investigation effectively using FIS developed in this study. Accordingly, investigation and time costs can be reduced and field-work productivity will be improved.
Since the development of a new paradigm of sustainable forest management, concerns have been focused on how the sustainability of forests will be assessed and measured objectively. This study examined the conceptual displacement on what is sustainability of forests, and analyzed the progress made by international and regional initiatives on criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management in terms of comparability and compatibility. Regarding data availability and applicability of criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management, the data reports gathered from Montreal Process member countries were analyzed. Within this context, Korean case were examined, using all possible existing information sources such as Forest Statistics, on 6 items of concepts of criteria and indicators, degree of difficulties, measurement units, data availabilities, problems and needs of future improvements for data gathering. The study also analyzed the applicability of criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management.
The objective of this paper is to elicit some policy implications to promote agroforestry in South Korea from the consumers' perspective. We conducted internet survey to 640 urban households about the recognition of forest farming products. Consumers purchased forest farming products for their nutrition, medical function, and safety and regarded them as higher quality than crops cultivated from agricultural land. Consumers preferred forest farming products but revealed no difference in recognition of naturally-grown products. Consumers buying forest products prioritize the quality and medical function among attributes. Among consumers as their income increases, they regard naturally grown products more important than price and freshness. Therefore, to promote agroforestry in South Korea, certification for naturally-grown products to win the consumers' trust and the $6^{th}$ industrialization by combining experience and green tourism program must be considered.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate in resources of natural recreation forest(RNRF) developed both publicly and privately in order to answer the research question: what are the differences in RNRF development between public and private developers. After reviewing the literature, the developer´s decision-making and motivation of investment, and the planning process of natural recreation forest, We constructed the conceptual framework and have formulated the hypothesis of this research. We had obtained data through a questionnaire, which surveyed of 625 visitors at 9 of the 72 natural recreation forests in Korea in 1999, We have analyzed the data using the mean difference test and logistic regression method. We found that 1) the overall quality of resource elements in RNRF has been development excellent except for the sociocultural element of recreational resources, and public recreation forest have been of higher quality than that fo private development, 20 in bivariate analysis, all the variables on quality of RNRF by public developers have turned out to be better than those of private ones, 3) in multivariate analysis, such variable as valley and water, forest and wildness area, wild life, and landscape have been statistically significant at one percent level, 4) the higher the value of valley and water, the higher the probability of public development, while the higher the value of other variables excluding water and valley, the more likelihood the recreational forest is developed by a private developer, and 5) forest and wildness area has been turned out to be the most important independent variable in contributing to the value of dependent variable. The research results suggest that 1) the differences in the quality of resource elements in RNRF developed by public and private body be considered in the planning and design process in order to develop diverse activities to make use of the resource potential, and 2) considering the resource characteristics of private natural recreation forest and the motivation of private developers, private natural recreation forest will possibly be more dynamic and dynamic attractive areas. It is recommended that the difference in the degree of visitor´s satisfaction between public and private development be examined.

Forest type map is a main forest thematic map which shows forest type, age class, diameter class and density. This map has been used as a base data in various fields such as forest policy decision-making, land suitability assessment and eco map production etc. But the existing map had many kinds of errors and no metadata because there was no standard for digital map production. On this study, we developed standard for digital forest type map production consisting of 33 unit processes including DB schema design, mapping process, quality control and metadata input process. Based on this standard, country-wide digital forest type map can be produced with consistent quality and standard metadata.
In this study, it was intended to compare the two methodologies for forest management project through extension of rotation age: Korean Forest Carbon Offset Standard (KFOS) and Verified Carbon Standard (VCS). The amount of carbon removals and offset credits based on the two methodologies and their trends were analyzed in this study. The major difference between two methodologies were found at the process of estimation of baseline carbon removals. For instance, average carbon stock during the project period was used for estimation of baseline carbon removals in KFOS, while average carbon stock change during the 100 years was used in VCS. Due to the different approach for estimation of baseline carbon removal, the estimated offset credits were also different according to the two methodologies. In this study, 15 project scenarios were considered for comparison of two methodologies : 5 major coniferous stands in Korea (Pinus densiflora in Gangwon region, Pinus densiflora in Central region, Pinus koraiensis, Larix leptolepis, Chamaecyparis obtusa) with 3 project periods (30, 35, 40 years). The results showed that estimated carbon offset credits based on the KFOS methodology were higher for all 15 scenarios compared to those based on the VCS methodology. The KFOS showed a steep decline in the annual offset credit as project period gets longer, thus it is not desirable for projects with longer period. VCS is more acceptable for longer projects with a small difference according to the project periods. The results also indicated that Pinus densiflora in Gangwon, Pinus koraiensis, and Larix leptolepis are more desirable species for forest management project through the extension of ration age.
Spatial information on forest biomass is an important factor to evaluate the capability of forest as a carbon sequestrator and is a core independent variable required to drive models which describe ecological processes such as carbon budget, hydrological budget, and energy flow. The objective of this study is to understand the relationship between satellite image and field data, and to quantitatively estimate and map the spatial distribution of forest biomass. Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+) derived vegetation indices and field survey data were applied to estimate the biomass distribution of mountainous forest located in Gwangneung Experimental Forest (230 ha). Field survey data collected from the ground plots were used as the dependent variable, forest biomass, while satellite image reflectance data (Band 1~5 and Band 7), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI), and RVI (Ratio Vegetation Index) were used as the independent variables. The mean and total biomass of Gwangneung catchment area were estimated to be about 229.5 ton/ha and $52.8{\times}10^3$ tons respectively. Regression analysis revealed significant relationships between the measured biomass and Landsat derived variables in both of deciduous forest ($R^2=0.76$, P < 0.05) and coniferous forest ($R^2=0.75$, P < 0.05). However, there still exist many uncertainties in the estimation of forest ecosystem parameters based on vegetation remote sensing. Developing remote sensing techniques with adequate filed survey data over a long period are expected to increase the estimation accuracy of spatial information of the forest ecosystem.
