Extending the Storage Periods of Zanthoxylum schinifolium Seed Oil using Sodium Bicarbonate and Ascorbic Acid (중탄산나트륨과 아스코르브산을 이용한 산초유의 저장기간 연장)

  • Morus alba, Anti-obesity, C57BL/6 Mice, Expression, Flavonoid, Gene, Mulberry Background: The seed oil of Zanthoxylum schinifolium S. et Z. (sancho) is a traditional cooking oil that has long been sold at a very high price however, depending on the method of extraction and storage, this oil becomes rancid occurs very quickly. Therefore, this study aimed to find a material that prevents rancidity and improves the storage properties of sancho oil. Methods and Results: Sancho oil was extracted using an extraction press, and acid values were compared with commercially available vegetable oils, sancho oil had a higher acid value than other vegetable oils. A very high acid value was observed in sancho oil stored for 6 months, regardless of temperature, requiring an effective storage method. The high acid value and the decrease in turbidity of sancho oil are dependent on the days of sedimentation. Treatment with sodium bicarbonate by concentration resulted in minimal changes in acid value over time. However, minor differences were detected among the treatment concentrations. Ascorbic acid was added to maximize the effect of sodium bicarbonate, and it was observed that ascorbic acid did not improve the antioxidant effect. The sodium bicarbonate and ascorbic acid mixture resulted in minimal change in acid value at temperature up to 25℃. Conclusions: Sancho oil becomes rancid very quicky and requires efficient storage techniques. Sodium bicarbonate and ascorbic acid have been proven to be useful as safe anti-racidity agents without causing harm to humans.

  • In this paper, the status of forest and forestry together with the trend of forest hydrology in Japan are firstly overviewed for the mutual understanding between the Japan Society of Hydrology and Water Resources (JSHWR) and the Korean Water Resources Association (KWRA). Then, Long-Term Ecological Research recently introduced in Asia is briefly explained, and the establishment of Japan-Korea Long-Term Forest Hydrological Research Network is proposed.

Anticariogenic Activity of Callistemon citrinus Extract against Streptococcus mutans

  • Streptococcus mutans is known as a strong cariogenic bacterium and produces dental caries. This study was carried out to develop anticariogenic agents from Callistemon citrinus. Crude extracts and thier various solvent fractions of the plant extracts were tested for the antibacterial activity against S. mutans. The anticariogenic activity was evaluated with by paper disc diffusion method and minimal inhibition concentration (MIC). The extract from the fruit and its hexane fraction showed a strong inhibitory effect on the growth of S. mutans and the MICs were 31.2 and $3.9{\mu}g/m{\ell}$, respectively.

  • Mattirolomyces terfezioides and Tricholoma bakamatsutake, commercially important mycorrhizal mushrooms, were found for the first time in the forests of Robinia pseudoacacia and Quercus mongolica of the Korean peninsula, respectively. Morphological and molecular characteristics were discussed in the paper. We have also given the Korean name to the fungi here.

  • The trend and achievments of soil erosion control research in Japan were investigated through observation tours and reference work and following facts were found to be important aspects which should be considered in the soil erosion control research program in Korea. Experiments on forest and water relations, and ground water phenomena at the water source zone in Tokyo University. Studies on land-slides and erosion control dam in Kyoto University. Studies on mud-flow and snow avalanches in Hokkaido University. Studies on sanddune fixation and disaster damage prevention forests in Kyushu University. Studies on forest denudations in Nagoya University. Studies on Greening-works and soil erosion prevention chemicals in Tokyo Agriculture University. Classification of Degraded Peat Swamp Forest for Restoration Planning at Landscape Level Using Remote Sensing Technique

  • Malaysia possesses about 1.56 million ha of Peat Swamp Forest (PSF). The PSF safeguard enormous biological diversity, while providing crucial benefits for the sustainable development of human communities. Numbers of threatened plant species are associated with the PSF, including the commercially important Gonystylus bancanus timber. To prevent significant losses of biodiversity, it is important to manage the PSF for both biological conservation and sustainable use. Equally important is to restore all degraded PSF in an attempt to ensure the PSF ecosystem is suitable for the vegetation to grow and rehabilitate back to the normal condition. Prior to plan any forest restoration program, there is a need to properly map the degraded PSF in order to estimate the forest conditions and determine the vegetations status. Most of the time this need to be done at a landscape level and requires a technology that can provide accurate, timely and reliable information for the planner to make decision. This paper describes a study using geospatial technology in combination with ground survey to classify the degraded PSF in South East Pahang Peat Swamp Forest (SEPPSF), Malaysia, into different degree of vegetation classes. With map accuracy of about 83%, the technique proved to be useful in delineating the different degree of PSF degradation from which the information can be used to properly plan forest restoration program in the area. The final output which is in the form of map can be used in developing a Restoration Master Plan for the degraded PSF areas.

Study on the Local Officials' Awareness for Direction of Forest Landscape Management (산림경관관리 방향 설정을 위한 지자체 관리자 의식분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to survey the current awareness of local officials and to give a proposal that can establish the meaningful directions for the forest landscape policy. The data for this study was collected with questionnaires. Total 232 questionnaires were launched and valid 105 questionnaires were used for analysis. As a result of these data analysis, we found out that their awareness of the importance of forest landscape was high and they thought forest landscape plan was needed. However supply of the information and data such as guidelines to improve forest landscape condition was not enough. Through the IPA method, we had 15 properties of forest landscape policy were settled. It show us what needs to be kept up the good work, what needs to be concentrated here, what the low priority are, or what the possible overkill are. We finally suggest that direction of forest landscape management should be established based on above investigation.

Analysis of Forest Resources and Timber Production Potential of Larix kaempferi in South Korea (국내 일본잎갈나무림의 자원량 및 목재생산 잠재량 분석)

  • The goal of this study was to classify the area of Larix kaempferi forest available for timber production, considering the legal, physical, environmental, and technical constraints, and to optimize the forest resources and the potential of timber production in South Korea for 50 years. The results showed that the area of Larix kaempferi forest available for timber production is limited to 124,000 ha, 48% of the total area. Without further efforts in resource management, sustainable timber production of Larix kaempferi cannot be guaranteed even at the current level of timber supply. To enhance the potential of timber production for this species, two alternatives were considered: a 705-km annual increment of forest roads (alternative 1) and a 1,000-kmannual increment of forest roads (alternative 2) to enlarge forest areas available for timber production. The results showed that alternative 1 is feasiblefor sustainable timber production both at the current level and with a 5% increment of timber supply. However, alternative 1 is not sufficient in the case of a 10% increment of timber supply with a low growing stock, whereas alternative 2 is sufficient. Therefore, an increase in forests roads as well as regeneration efforts are required to improve the timber production potential of Larix kaempferi in South Korea.

  • Mass production of forest medicinal plants is related to quality control of raw medicinal materials. Plant tissue culture is an important technology to produce high-quality plant materials. Numerous factors are reported to influence the success of in vitro regeneration of medicinal plants. Embryogenesis is known to be the most effective techniques and it has developed in some medicinal plant species. Various in vitro cultural condition for direct and/or indirect somatic embryogenesis systems have developed in Epimedium koreaum, Bupleurum falcatum, Paeonia lactiflora, Chrysanthemum zawadskii, Houttuynia cordata etc. In this study, we provide the present statue and information of in vitro propagation techniques that is able to apply as an efficient system for rootstock propagation system of forest medicinal plants.

  • Tropical tasar silkworm, Antheraea mylitta (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) is a polyphagous silk producing forest silkworm of commercial importance in India. Forest dependent people rear its larvae on different forestry host plants twice or thrice in a year for small household income. Larvae of A. mylitta feeds on many forest tree species, but always show a great degree of selectivity as a function of its behavioural responses to physical structure and chemical features of the host plants. Cocoon crop of A. mylitta is influenced by heterogeneity of tasar food plants and climatic conditions of the habitat. The role of host plants, temperature, humidity, rainfall, photoperiod and climatic variables on the growth and development of insects have clearly been demonstrated. This article entails an in-depth analysis on ecological and nutritional aspects of A. mylitta, which may provide selective information to researcher and forest managers, who are particularly associated with livelihood improvement of the poor people in forested area through location specific forest insect industry.
