  • This study is about the co-relationship between the directional orientation of the houses and the geometric direction in the Korean traditional villages. The major mountain in the back of the village and the front mountain ranges give the most important influence for the direction of the houses. This paper, therefore, tries to identify how the houses of villages facing South-west direct the orientation. The village, where the natural environment face the South-west village, solves the problem by facing major direction rather than one all direction. All houses observe and respect the circumstance of geomantic surrounding to the extant that almost no houses revise its direction without any geomantic reference. This kind of research let us know the relationship between the natural direction, the direction of geomantic surrounding, and the direction of houses in traditional Korean villages.

  • We propose plain fingerprint classification based on a core stochastic algorithm that effectively uses a core stochastic model, acquiring more fingerprint minutiae and direction, in order to increase matching performance. The proposed core stochastic algorithm uses core presence/absence and contains a ridge direction and distribution map. Simulations show that the fingerprint classification accuracy is improved by more than 14%, on average, compared to other algorithms.

  • Although information communication technology (ICT) has been one of the most important infrastructures for our societies, it is still considered as a kind of black box having a barrier to be accepted and being not easily understood. Nevertheless, there are no proper research models or theories for explaining older adults' ICT uses. The objective of this study is to suggest a direction for studying older adults' ICT using behaviors. For this purpose, based on the review and analysis of current studies, main research issues are discussed and a new research framework for the research of older adults' ICT use, Silver ICT users Life Cycle(SILC), is suggested.

  • The purpose of this research is to suggest the direction of the school planning for the future that could respond actively to fast-changing circumstances of the times. The specific purpose is as follows. First, this research creates the education spatial model for the future that could prepare the education for globalization, informationization, liberalization and suggests the direction of the school planning that would correspond to the revised curriculum in 2009. Based on the research findings, establish the fundamental architectural planning guidelines and provide a blueprint of the advanced school for the future. Second, this research suggests diverse layout method of the school building blocks for the future. Key factors, which are method of teaching, planning for eco-school, planning for ubiquitous computing environment, planning of mixed-use school facilities that would give direction of the school planning for the future are determined through theoretical consideration about the social structure, direction of education for the future and case study. Based on these keys factors, this research suggests directions of the school planning for the future.

  • Mean concentrations of ammonia gas released as a tracer from an isolated low-rise building have been measured and predicted. Predictions were calculated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and two dispersion models: a diffusion model and a Lagrangian particle tracking technique. Explicit account was taken of the natural variation of wind direction by a technique based on the weighted summation of individual steady state wind direction results according to the probability density function of the wind direction. The results indicated that at distances >3 building heights downstream the weighted predictions from either model are satisfactory but that in the near wake the diffusion model is less successful. Weighted solutions give significantly improved predictions over unweighted results. Lack of plume spread is identified as the main cause of inaccuracies in predictions and this is linked to inadequate resolution of flow features and mixing in the CFD model. Further work on non-steady state simulation of wake flows for dispersion studies is recommended.

  • This research proposes a modified particle filter to increase the accuracy of vehicle tracking in a noisy and occluded medium. In our proposed method for vehicle tracking, the direction angle of a target vehicle is calculated. The angular difference between the motion direction of the target vehicle and each particle of the particle filter is observed. Particles are filtered and weighted depending on their angular distance to the motion direction. Those particles moving in a direction similar to that of the target vehicle are assigned larger weights; this, in turn, increases their probability in a given likelihood function (part of the process of estimation of a target's state parameters). The proposed method is compared against a condensation algorithm. Our results show that the proposed method improves the stability of a particle filter tracker and decreases the particle consumption.

  • Low back pain is a common phenomenon among the golfers. In an attempt to understand low back pain, the kinematic changes and golf swing motion analysis has been performed to focus on lumbar spine in pro. golfers. According to the swing pattern, significant variations of the lumbar joint forces and loads has related with muscles activities so the motion analysis of lumbar spine were discussed. The purpose of this study was to analyze motion of lumbar spine and it was to compare joint force during golf swing in pro. golfers. The swing motion of the subjects was tracked using a 3D motion analysis system by Motion Analysis Ltd. and SIMM software. The angle changes of lumbar spine rapidly in vx direction during the top back swing and the finish and in vy direction during the follow through and in vz direction during the down swing and the impact(Subject A). The angle changes of lumbar spine rapidly in vx direction during the top back swing and in vy direction during the down swing, the impact and the follow through and in vz direction during the down swing(Subject B). In conclusion, subject A and B both show sudden angle changes between 1st-3rd lumbar spine and 4th-5th lumbar spine during the stage from address to top back swing which caused by over upper body twisting.

  • This paper discusses of the problem of direction and orientation of site design of a traditional Korean village. The research focus on how the directional orientation of each houses adapt the direction of the flow of surrounding mountains. The direction of mountains worked as a prime rule which most of the houses( 76.6%) observed the same direction as their own orientation. While the central part of the village followed the direction of mountains more strictly, however the houses on the periphery area tend to be more free from the direction of mountains. This houses of the periphery respect either the direction of the mountain flow right behind the house or faces toward the south.
