  • Samyang Genex succeeded in commercialization of anticancer agent-paclitaxel by plant cell culture technology. The core technology of Samyang Genex relating paclitaxel production includes cell line development, cell line preservation, cell culture, scale-up technology, and purification technology. On the basis of the research, Samyang Genex built the factory operated by CGMP (current good manufacturing practice). The $paclitaxel-Genexol^{TM}$ is commercially available in Korea, and it will be launched to world market including USA after approval US FDA.

  • To produce cupped oyster sprat consistently, we investigated the efficiency of nine settlement substrates using selective breeding of Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas, with the goal of popularizing off-bottom culture on the west coast of Korea. We also compared the growth and survival of selectively bred sprat (diploid) with triploid sprat from an off-bottom culture system. Considering, the attachment rate and detachment efficiency, producing cupped oyster in a polypropylene gunny bag proved to be the most effective method. There were no differences in shell growth or total weight between the diploids from selective breeding and triploids from off-bottom culture for 5 months. However, the survival rate was 8 times higher in the diploids than the triploids. Transplanting sprat from selective breeding is one way to restore oyster farms and nurture off-bottom culture along the west coast.

  • The effects of several additives on plant regeneration were investigated from leaf disc culture of S. tuberosum cv. Atlantic which is known as poor in regeneration ability. The presence of 2 g/L casein hydrolysate significantly enhanced shoot regeneration. Addition of 10~20 $\mu$M $AgNO_3$, not only increased the frequency of shoot regeneration but also maintained the leaf disc green presumably by the inhibitory action of ethylene accumulation in vitro. Decrease of sucrose levels to below 3% significantly increased the degree of regeneration. The addition of CuSO$_4$had no effect on shoot regeneration.

  • As a consequence of tissue culture of rice, RAPD analysis was peformed to determine whether extended culture periods as undifferentiated calli affected the subsequent genetic constancy, and whether any resulting DNA rearrangements could be detected between sibling plants produced from the same callus. Somaclonal variation was induced at the initial stage of tissue culture and it increased with the length of culture maintenance. Of the 192 total bands, the number of polymorphic bands was 22 (11.5%), 33 (17.2%), and 49 (25.5%) in the callus of 1,3, and 6 months culture, respectively. A significantly higher level of genotypic polymorphisms between regenerants from two different somaclones was also detected, although all the regenerants were derived from a single genotype. In comparison of DNA polymorphisms between regenerants from non-irradiated and from irradiated calli, a scope of variation spectrum by gamma ray irradiation was larger than that by tissue culture. Consideration must be given to this genomic variation where attempts are to be made to use desirable somaclonal variants for plant breeding purpose and in genetic engineering program.

  • Protein productivity by the cellulolytic fungi, Trichoderma viride(MTCC 800), Chaetomium globosum and Aspergillus terreus was compared in co-culture and mixed culture fermentations of cashewnut bran. Co-cultures were more effective in substrate saccharification, which ranged between $85{\sim}88%$ compared to the $62{\sim}67%$ saccharification shown by the monocultures. Maximum saccharification was induced by T. viride and C. globosum co-culture resulting in the highest 34% release of reducing sugars. The maximum 16.4% biomass protein and the highest protein productivity(0.58%) were shown by T. viride and A. terreus co-culture. A. terreus performed better in co-culture in the presence of T. viride rather than with C. globosum. Among the cellulolytic enzymes, FPase(Filter Paper Cellulase) activity was significantly higher in all the co-cultures and in the mixed culture than in their respective monocultures. Mixed culture fermentation involving all the three fungi was not effective in increasing the per cent saccharification or the biomass protein content over the co-cultures.

  • In Bangkok, dental clinics are ubiquitous with high competition in many areas. It was quite difficult for new entries to survive in the market. However, there was an interesting dental clinic that opened in the Asoke area and has more than 4,000 patients within 2 years of opening. The number of employees in this dental clinic was only 20. The purpose of the study was to investigating the corporate culture of this dental clinic and how the corporate culture impacted the company performance. The result of this study showed that this dental clinic had "involvement type" corporate culture. This is another example of a case study about corporate culture and corporate characteristics that motivate employees and ultimately helped organizations maximize their performance. The case study might motivate entrepreneurs to set up the proper corporate culture and help the company to be more sustainable.

  • With the increase in multi-cultural families, Korea is seeing a rapid increase in immigrated housewives, who are closely related to food culture. However, studies for the diet of multi-cultural families, which is most closely related to our lives have not been sufficiently researched. With this background, this study conducted research for immigrated women nationwide about food cultures to provide the possibility which Korean food culture would be developed harmoniously with various foreign food cultures. In this study, the immigrated women seemed to have adapted to Korean food culture quickly, but they showed differences according to some conditions like countries they are from and the time they have been in Korea. To achieve this, we need to conduct consistent and in depth studies for food cultures in multi-cultural families so that we can make healthy development in food culture, harmonious with traditional Korean culture.
