  • For safety-critical systems including railways, there has been a growing need for effective and systematic safety management processes. The outcomes of efforts in this area are international safety standards, such as IEC 61508, 62278, and ISO 26262. One of the principal activities in the safety process is hazard analysis. For this reason, considerable efforts have been directed toward methods of hazard analysis. On the other hand, the hazard analysis methods reported thus far appear to be unclear in terms of their relationship with the system design process. In addition, in some cases, the methods appear to rely heavily on information regarding the hardware and software components, the number of which is increasing. These aspects can become troublesome when design changes are necessary. To improve the situation, in this paper, hazard analysis was carried out using the result of functional analysis early in the concept development stage for a safety-critical system design. Because hazard analysis is carried out at the system level and the result is then used to develop the safety requirements, improvements can be expected in terms of the development time and cost when design changes are required due to changes in the requirements. As a case study, the generation of safety requirements for the development of light rail transit stations is presented.

  • For the purpose of technology planning and R&D strategy, this research developed a methodology for deriving technical information based on stakeholder requirements using natural language processing technology. The requirements are decomposed into semantic information based on grammar rules, and then the requirement information based technology information can be derived by linking with the three technical information extracted from the patent.

  • Object-oriented development methodologies require consistent and seamless object-oriented paradigm to be applied from analysis to testing. Testing must focuses on the state of aggregated objects. This paper suggests testing methods that satisfy such requirements. In order to confirm appropriate implementation of the user requirements, the methods apply extended use case[Jacobson et al., 1992] that are prepared form analysis stage. Testing must be performed based on the use cases because the user requirements are formally documented in the use cases. The notations of the original use case are modified for the state-based testings. The testing methods consist of a unit testing and four-level of integration testing. Particularly, the level 0 testing is based on FREE state machine [Binder, 1995, 1996]. The testing methods have been applied to 3 projects and proved their practicability.

  • The Uniform Building Code (UBC) is the most widely used requirements for earthquake resistant design in the United States. In this paper, a mid-rise steel building is analyzed by applying 12 sets of actual strong-motion earthquake data that have been scaled to acne 2B levels. The simply extrapolated ground motion displacements are used for the dynamic loads. The results of dynamic analyses for a 10-story steel building are compared with the static and dynamic analysis requirements of UBC-88. It was found that computed lateral fortes using UBC-88 static procedure differed by about 60 percent depending on whether the natural period was computed using the UBC empirical method or the UBC recommended Rayleigh's method. The lateral fortes computed from the UBC response spectra were more than 10 times greater than those computed by UBC static procedures. The lateral forces obtained from both linear and nonlinear analyses using 1989 Loma Prieta ground mot ions compared very well with UBC response spectra results.

  • Assessing user information requirements is one of the most important issues in building Executive Information Systems. Application of the Balanced Score Card method as a tool for strategic planning and performance measurement has been increasing recently in various fields. However there has been meager attempt to apply the method to user requirement analysis, in particular, for small and medium sized companies. This study surveyed 79 executives of small and medium sized companies in Korea. The study founds the applicability of BSC for analyzing user requirements of EIS, in terms of financial, customer, internal process, learning and growth perspectives. The paper also suggested several guidelines for using BSC to improve user satisfaction to the practitioners who are operating or planning to build EIS in the small and medium sized companies.

  • Thermal design fur satellite propulsion system has been performed. Overall design requirements and the constitution for propulsion system is described. To meet the thermal design requirements, both a primary and a redundant heater circuit, each with two thermostats placed in series, will protect each hydrazine-wetted components, even if one heater circuit fails to operate. Heater power is turned off if any one of these thermostats is opened at its higher setpoint. Thus, even if one thermostat is failed closed, the second thermostat will turn off the heater. All such components shall be insulated with MLI. Propulsion heater sizing based on the constant worst cold case condition is conducted through thermal analysis. All heaters selected fur propulsion components operate to prevent propellant freezing satisfying the thermal requirements for the propulsion subsystem over the worst case average voltage, i.e. 25 volts.

  • This paper is a study on an optical bench satisfying stiffness and thermal pointing error requirements for LEO earth observation satellite. According to shape and stiffness requirements, optical bench type 1 is designed. Because type 1 does not satisfy the thermal pointing error requirement, an optical bench type 2 is suggested. Although the type 2 has better results than type 1, it still does not meet the thermal pointing error requirement. Using the results of optical bench type 1&2, the optical bench type 3 is finally designed, which satisfies both the stiffness and thermal pointing error requirements.

  • We analyze the current quality management status for firms producing steel outfits of ships and develop an efficient QMS appropriate to Korean steel outfit industry. The firms recently obtained ISO 9000 certificates and are located in Pusan ${\cdot}$ Kyungnam district of Korea. The analysis is based on the audit results from ISO 9000 for seven steel outfit firms during last three years. We find out major requirements of ISO 9000 and investigate statistical relationship among major requirements, types of data, and groups of firms by using a statistical package, SAS. Recommendations regarding add-on requirements are suggested to install an efficient QMS in Korean steel outfit firms.

  • Railway systems are one of the best mass transit systems and many people have prevented incidents/accidents and reduced fatalities remarkably. Especially we have tried analyzing and finding the measures to prevent catastrophic accidents like train collision, derailment and fire because of their severities. It is important to assess the safety performances of railway systems like crash-worthiness analysis, body, derailment affecting factor analysis and so on for reducing and finding out the reasonable causes of disastrous accidents. In this paper the refined top-level system requirements to build-up national infra for assessing railway safety performance and the procedures and methodology for reviewing, verifying and validating infra requirements are explained. Basically the authors have used system engineering processes to analyze and verify the requirements and installation procedures and have tried maximizing the practicality of the various safety assessment systems.

  • What is an ideal authentication method for smartphone banking services? And what are the critical elements to be considered when designing it? To provide valuable insight for these questions, this study investigates various authentication requirements to be considered in smartphone banking service with the aspect of security, convenience and cost. By applying Analytic Network Process (ANP), this study first analyzes priorities among the requirements and then draws an ideal authentication method for smartphone banking service. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis has been conducted by varying the relative importance of several requirements. The results from the judgment of 72 experts revealed that, although Korean government has obliged the use of Public Key certificate, OPT and biometric alternatives may prove to be more appropriate for the smartphone banking service. These results will contribute to the provision of more secured and convenient smartphone banking services.
