Amphibian and Reptilia Fauna in Chuwangsan National Park (주왕산국립공원의 양서.파충류상)

  • Amphibian and Reptilian fauna in Chuwangsan National Park was carried out both Apr. 28, 1994 - Apr. 30, 1994 and Aug. 4, 1994-Aug. 5, 1994. 7 species in 5 Families in Amphibia and 7 species in 3 Families in Reptilia were observed in this survey. Rana dyhowskii in Amphibia and Rhabdophis tigrinus tigrinus in Reptilia were revealed dominant species in Chuwangsan National Park. The results in this survey would be use to baseline data significantly after the project of construction works in Chuwangsan National Park.

  • For a few people's leisure, the natural environment have being deteriorated ceaseless. The plan of the Chungchongpuk Province and the Yungdong District in Chungchongpuk-do which drive foreword the sport and leasure complex designed to construct ski slopes, golf course, and resort hotel in 6,000,000 $m^2$ of natural ecosystem around the Mulhan Valley at Mulhan-ri Sangchon-myon Yungdong-kun Chung-chcngbuk-do by Dongsin Leisure have concerned decrease on biological diversity serious. This study carried out by census Amphibia and Reptilia fauna in the Mulhan Valley to expect the impact of animal diversity by construction of leasure complex and to call attention to understand that impact. 8 species in 5 Families of 2 Orders in Amphibia and 5 species in 2 Families of 1 Order in Reptilia were observed in the Mulhan Valley during June 24, 1994 to June 25, 1994 which showed to be similar to the Natural Park in Korea. 4 of 8 species in Amphibia(Hynobius leechii, Onychodactylus fischeri, Bufo bufo gargarizans, and Rana dybowskii) and 3 of 5 species in Reptilia(Eluphe rufodorsata, Dinodon rufodonatum rufodonatum, and Agkistrodon saxatilus) were revealed the Special Wild Animal recorded by the Ministry of Environment in 1993. Therefore, the Minjujisan seems to have highly reason to conservation by these animal diversity. Around the Minjujisan province was significant connecting the Taebaek Mountains and the Sobaek Mountains on biogeographically with Dokyusan National Park. The plan of Leasure complex in the Mulhan Valley should be cancel in consideration of destruction around the Dokyusan National Park severely by the Muju Resort, Ski slopes, etc. The Minjujisan must be conserve to the Zone of Natural Environment on Amphibia and Reptilia diversity and animal migration route.

  • Constructing a long, linear structure such as a high-way may cause the break-up of the natural ecology by cutting off the trails of animals. We could observe 12 kinds of mammals, 49 kinds of birds and 10 kinds of amphibia and reptilia at the research area. With this research, we were so sure of the necessity of building ecological corridors to prevent the ecological break-up of wild animals that we studied the building and maintaining of 3 types of ecological corridors; tunnel types, over-bridge type and line type.

  • We reconsidered the taxonomy of lizards in Korea on the basis of morphological characters of collected specimens and previously published data. A total of 138 specimens were used in this study, which were collected from April 1996 to October 2005, From the observations, we presented keys to classify Korean lizards. Also, we indicated sampling sites for each species on the Korean map. In addition, we added some remarks on the distribution of Gekko japonicus, the study of genus Scincella and the synonym of genus Takydromus. Especially, it was uncertain whether the southern Korean Peninsula is a natural habitat of Takydromus tachydromoides oldi which will be necessary in further study.

Intraspecific Diversity of Korean Takydromus wolteri(Reptilia: Squamata) Based on Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) Analysis (RAPD를 이용한 한국산 줄장지뱀(Reptilia: Squamata)의 종내 다양성에 관한 연구)

  • The lacertid lizard Takydromus wolteri widely distributed in South Korea, but intraspecific diversity of this species was not almost studied. T. wolteri represented by 8 specimens collected from 5 localities were analyzed by the Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) method with 28 random decamer primers and the phenogram constructed by using the Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean (UPGMA) method based on RAPD data. The populations of T. wolteri using in this paper were collected from Gyeonggi-do, Chungcheongbuk-do, Jeju-do, Jeollanam-do and Gyeongsangnam -do in South Korea. Among 68 different bands detected in RAPD analysis, 59 bands (87%) showed polymorphism. The phenogram showed that the populations of T. wolteri were grouped into two. These results suggest that T. wolteri were supported intraspecific diversity.

Relationship between the nucleolar cycle and chromatoid body formation in the spermatogenesis of $Phrynops$ $geoffroanus$ (Reptilia Testudines)

  • The nucleolus is a distinct nuclear territory involved in the compartmentalization of nuclear functions. There is some evidence of a relationship between nuclear fragmentation during spermatogenesis and chromatoid body (CB) formation. The CB is a typical cytoplasmic organelle of haploid germ cells, and is involved in RNA and protein accumulation for later germ-cell differentiation. The goal of this study was to qualitatively and quantitatively describe the nucleolar cycle during the spermatogenesis of $Phrynops$ $geoffroanus$ (Reptilia Testudines), and compare this nucleolar fragmentation with CB formation in this species through the use of cytochemical and ultrastructural analysis. Qualitative analysis showed a fragmentation of the nuclear material after pachytene of the first meiotic division in the primary spermatocytes. Quantitative analysis of the nucleolar cycle revealed a significant difference in the number of nucleoli and in the size of the nucleolus between spermatogonia and early spermatids. Using ultrastructural analysis, we recorded the beginning of the CB formation process in the cytoplasm of primary spermatocytes at the same time as when nuclear fragmentation occurs. In the cytoplasm of primary spermatocytes, the CB was observed in association with mitochondrial aggregates and the Golgi complex. In the cytoplasm of early spermatids, the CB was observed in association with lipid droplets. In conclusion, our data show that the nucleolus plays a role in the CB formation process. During spermatogenesis of $P.$ $geoffroanus$, the CB is involved in some important biological processes, including acrosome formation and mitochondrial migration to the spermatozoon tail and middle piece region.

  • 척추동물(7목 23종)의 췌장에서 insulin( B)세포, glucagon(A)세포, somatostatin( D)세포 및 pancreatic polypeptide( PP)세포 등을 면역세포화학법으로 동정하여 이들의 출현율, 분포양상 및 형태 등을 계통별로 비교하였다. 파충강의 거북목, 양서강의 유미목 및 어강의 악상대목 들을 제외한 모든 종에서 췌도의 형성을 관찰할 수 있었으며, 췌도를 구성하는 내분비세포의 크기에는 계통간의 차이가 있었다. B세포는 파충강의 것이 가장 크고, 양서강, 어강의 순이 었으며 A와 PP세포는 양서강, 파충강 및 어강의 순서였다. D세포는 양서강의 것이 가장 윤고, 다음이 어장이었으며, 파충강의 것이 가장 작았다. 이들 세포의 모양은 B세포의 경우 양서강과 어장에서는 원형, 난원형 및 방추형이었으며, 파충강에서는 원추형 및 단기형 등 다양한 모습이었다. A세포는 어강에서는 원헝, 난원형 및 방추형이 고르게 나타났고, 파충강과 양서 강에서는 원주형, 다각형 및 쐐기형이 나타났다. D세포는 모든 동물에서 원형, 난원형 및 방추형이 관찰되었고, 특히 파충강에서는 원추형및 쐐기형도 나타났다. PP세포는 주로 방추형 및 반원형이 대다수이였으며 간혹 원형 또는 다각형 등의 모습도 나타났다. 각 내분비세포의 출현율은 파충강 열 어강 들에서는 B, A, D 및 PP세포 순이었으나, 양서 강에서는 B, A, PP 및 D세포 순으로 나타났다. B와 PP세포는 양서강, 어강 및 파충강 순서로 출현하였고, A세포는 파충강, 어강 및 양서강의 순서이었으며 D세포는 어강, 파충강 및 양서강의 순서였다. 췌도 내에서의 세포의 분포 위치는 세포의 종류에 따라 차이를 보여 B세포의 경우 대다수 동물들에서 중앙부에 균등하게 분포하였으나 A, D및 PP세포는 주로 췌도 주변부에 분포하였고, 어강에서의 D세포는 췌도 중앙부에서도 관찰되었다. 일반적으로 파충강 및 양서 강에서는 외분비 선포조직에서초 내분비세포들이 출현하였으나, 어강에서는 내분비세포가 전혀 출현하지 않았다. 양서강 및 어강 들의 일부 수에서는 췌관상피에서도 드물게 나타났다.

  • Herpetofauna in Soraksan National Park was carried out both Apr. 27, Apr. 28, 1996 and Aug. 19, Aug. 20, 1996. 6 stecies of 4 Families in Amphibian and 2 species of 2 Families in Reptilian were observed in this survey. It was observed relatively poor biota to other National Park that caused to excessive visitor and impacts by divelopments. Onychodactylus fischeri which was revealed Specific Endangered Animal assigned by Minister of Environmemt distributed abundantly along the Chohangnyong. So Chohangnyong should be conserved by prolonging the Year of Natural Rest.

First Record of Laticauda semifasciata (Reptilia: Squamata: Elapidae: Laticaudinae) from Korea

  • The Chinese sea snake Laticauda semifasciata (Reinwardt in Schlegel, 1837) is newly reported from Korean waters based on three specimens collected from Jeju Island, Korea, in August, September, and November 2015. This is the first time that the genus Laticauda and subfamily Laticaudinae has been reported from Korean waters. The subfamily Laticaudinae has ventrals that are four to five times wider than the adjacent dorsals, which are unlike the ventrals that are similar or up to two times wider than adjacent dorsals in the subfamily Hydrophiinae. Laticauda semifasciata is distinct from other species because it has three prefrontals and its rostrals are horizontally divided into two. As the result of this report, four species (L. semifasciata, Hydrophis (Pelamis) platurus, Hydrophis cyanocinctus, and H. melanocephalus) of sea snakes have been reported in Korean waters.

  • Information about the mating behaviors of an endangered species is critical for the understanding of the natural history of the species as well as in situ and ex situ breeding programs designed to rehabilitate field populations. We describe the mating behaviors of the Mongolian racerunner (Eremias argus), an endangered species in South Korea. The mating of this species consists of precopulatory, copulatory, and postcopulatory stages and is composed of 12 different mating behaviors. During the postcopulatory stage, other males or females not involved in mating show more interference behaviors than during the precopulatory and copulatory stages. The male E. argus has an extraordinarily long postcopulatory bite, which may function as a type of mate-guarding behavior. This study is the first report on the mating behavior of a South Korean reptile.
