Effect of cassia cinnamon intake on improvement of the glycemic response: An updated meta-analysis - Focus on preparation of dehydrated powder and water extract (계피의 혈당 개선 기능성 평가 : 메타분석 - 건조분말과 물추출물을 중심으로)

  • Purpose: This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effect of cassia cinnamon (Cinnamomum. cassia and C. aromaticum) on the glycemic response with a focus on the preparation of dehydrated powder and water extract. Methods: We searched Pubmed, Cochrane, EMBASE, Science Direct, and the Korean Studies Information Service System (KISS) through May 2017. In the meta-analysis for the preparation of powder, eight trials reporting fasting blood glucose (FBG), four trials reporting HbA1c, and three trials reporting the postprandial glycemic response were included. For the water extract, six trials reporting FBG and four trials reporting HbA1c were eligible for this study. A random-effects model was used to calculate the pooled effect size. Results: Cassia cinnamon powder intake significantly lowered FBG by -1.55 mmol/L (95% CI, -2.45, -0.64; p = 0.001) and the AUC of postprandial blood glucose level by $-51.8mmol/L{\cdot}min$ (95% CI, -85.5, -18.1; p = 0.003). There was a significant difference in FBG between water extract of cinnamon and placebo of -0.76 mmol/L (95% CI, -1.09, -0.43; p = 0.000). However, blood HbA1c level was not significantly altered by any preparation of cinnamon. No statistical heterogeneity was observed for any analysis except in the case of FBG for cinnamon powder. Results of funnel plots and Egger's regression suggest a low likelihood of publication bias in all biomarkers (p > 0.05). Conclusion: According to this meta-analysis, there was possible evidence to support a relationship between cassia cinnamon intake and fasting glucose in both preparation of powder and water extract. Furthermore, new evidence of the health benefits on postprandial glucose regulation of cinnamon powder was obtained.

Reporting Qualitative Research of Systematic Review in the Journal of Korean Medicine Rehabilitation According to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 Guidelines (PRISMA 2020 지침에 근거한 한방재활의학과학회지 체계적 문헌고찰 보고의 질 평가 연구)

  • Objectives The purpose of this study was to assess the reporting quality of systematic reviews and meta-analyses in the Journal of Korean Medicine Rehabilitation (JKMR) using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines. Methods Systematic reviews and meta-analyses in JKMR, published from January 1991 to January 2022, were selected by searching the Korean studies Information Service System and JKMR homepage. Two independent researchers searched and selected systematic reviews and meta-analyses and evaluated the reporting quality of abstracts and main texts using the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Results Of 1,515 articles, 39 systematic reviews were finally included for assessment. Evaluation of abstracts resulted in 2 studies rated as high, 11 studies rated as moderate, and 26 studies rated as low. A maximum of 83.3% and a minimum of 25.0% of the items were reported in the abstracts. Evaluation of the manuscripts resulted in no studies rated as high, 14 studies rated as moderate, and 25 studies rated as low. A maximum of 67.9% and a minimum of 34.1% of the items were reported in the manuscripts. Conclusions To improve the quality of systematic reviews published in JKMR, it is necessary to conduct systematic reviews based on the PRISMA 2020 guidelines.

Surveillance Evaluation of the National Cancer Registry in Sabah, Malaysia

  • Background: Cancer is the fourth leading cause of death in Sabah Malaysia with a reported age-standardized incidence rate was 104.9 per 100,000 in 2007. The incidence rate depends on non-mandatory notification in the registry. Under-reporting will provide the false picture of cancer control program effectiveness. The present study was to evaluate the performance of the cancer registry system in terms of representativeness, data quality, simplicity, acceptability and timeliness and provision of recommendations for improvement. Materials and Methods: The evaluation was conducted among key informants in the National Cancer Registry (NCR) and reporting facilities from Feb-May 2012 and was based on US CDC guidelines. Representativeness was assessed by matching cancer case in the Health Information System (HIS) and state pathology records with those in NCR. Data quality was measured through case finding and re-abstracting of medical records by independent auditors. The re-abstracting portion comprised 15 data items. Self-administered questionnaires were used to assess simplicity and acceptability. Timeliness was measured from date of diagnosis to date of notification received and data dissemination. Results: Of 4613 cancer cases reported in HIS, 83.3% were matched with cancer registry. In the state pathology centre, 99.8% was notified to registry. Duplication of notification was 3%. Data completeness calculated for 104 samples was 63.4%. Registrars perceived simplicity in coding diagnosis as moderate. Notification process was moderately acceptable. Median duration of interval 1 was 5.7 months. Conclusions: The performances of registry's attributes are fairly positive in terms of simplicity, case reporting sensitivity, and predictive value positive. It is moderately acceptable, data completeness and inflexible. The usefulness of registry is the area of concern to achieve registry objectives. Timeliness of reporting is within international standard, whereas timeliness to data dissemination was longer up to 4 years. Integration between existing HIS and national registration department will improve data quality.

  • A lot of studies to measure and analyze the system performance have been done in areas such as system modeling, performance measurement, monitoring, and performance prediction since the advent of a computer system. Studies on a framework to unify the performance related areas have rarely been performed although many studies in the various areas have been done, however. In the case of TMO(Time-Triggered Message-Triggered Object), a real-time programming model, it hardly provides tools and frameworks on the performance except a simple run-time monitor. So it is difficult to analyze the performance of the real-time system and the process based on TMO. Thus, in this paper, we propose a framework for the dynamic analysis of the real-time system based on TMO, TDAF(TMO based Dynamic Analysis Framework). TDAF treats all the processes for the performance measurement and analysis, and Provides developers with more reliable information systematically combining a load model, a performance model, and a reporting model. To support this framework, we propose a load model which is extended by applying TMO model to the conventional one, and we provide the load calculation algorithm to compute the load of TMO objects. Additionally, based on TMO model, we propose performance algorithms which implement the conceptual performance metrics, and we present the reporting model and algorithms which can derive the period and deadline for the real-time processes based on the load and performance value. In last, we perform some experiments to validate the reliability of the load calculation algorithm, and provide the experimental result.

  • The level of informaiton provided by most current EIS systems is not above presentation and reporting. To maximize the effect of EIS, we must increase executives' use-rate. To do so, it is important to provide information really required by the user. In a addition, the decision support funcitons should be provided for strategic decision making. In this paper we propose the methodology for adding the analysis and prediciton functions to the EIS that is, for supporting the decision making with the system. Finally, we present a pilot system based on the proposed methodology.

  • A medical image workstation was developed using multimedia technique. The system based on PC-486DX was designed to acquire medical images produced by medical imaging instruments and related audio information, that is, doctors' reporting results. Input information was processed and analyzed, then the results were presented in the form of graph and animation. All the informations of the system were hierarchically related with the image as the apex. Processing and analysis algorithms were implemented so that the diagnostic accuracy could be improved. The diagnosed information can be transferred for patient diagnosis through LAN(local area network).

  • It is necessary to analyze the railway accidents and incidents for the purpose of understanding present safety state and enhancing its system. Korea National Railroad has its accident/incident reporting codes, but it is relatively not sufficient for detail classification and investigation of accident and incident compared with foreign countries. This paper suggests how to classify the railway accident/incident, and describes the analysis result for domestic recent railway accidents and incidents according to the new suggested classifying system.
