This paper introduces the existence of purchase dependence that was identified during the analysis of inventory operations practice at a sales agency of dealing with spare parts for ship engines and generators. Purchase dependence is an important factor in designing an inventory replenishment policy. However, it has remained mostly unaddressed. Purchase dependence is different from demand dependence. Purchase dependence deals with the purchase behavior of customers, whereas demand dependence deals with the relationship between item-demands. In order to deal with purchase dependence in inventory operations practice, this paper proposes (Q, r) models with the consideration of purchase dependence. Through a computer simulation experiment, this paper compares performance of the proposed (Q, r) models to that of a (Q, r) model ignoring purchase dependence. The simulation experiment is conducted for two cases : a case of using a lost sale cost and a case of using a service level. For a case of using a lost sale cost, this paper calculates an order quantity, Q and a reorder point, r using the iterative procedure. However, for a case of using a service level, it is not an easy task to find Q and r. The complexity stems from the interactions among inventory replenishment policies for items. Thus, this paper considers the genetic algorithm (GA) as an optimization method. The simulation results demonstrates that the proposed (Q, r) models incur less inventory operations cost (satisfies better service levels) than a (Q, r) model ignoring purchase dependence. As a result, the simulation results supports that it is important to consider purchase dependence in the inventory operations practice.
This paper deals with a FOQ( ; fixed-order quantity) model for spare-part inventory control. In a spare-part inventory problem, stock depletion arises not from external market demand but from internal demand resulting from failures of parts in use. The problem differs from the classical inventory problem in that the demand for a failed part never arises more during stockout period, since the unit remains inoperative when stockout occurs until the failed part is replaced by new one. In the problem under consideration, n identical units are operating simultaneously and failed one is replaced immediately by new one if on-hand spares remain. In order to replenish spares, an order with quantity Q is placed whenever the number of on-hand spares falls to levels. The average annual cost of operating the spare-part inventory system is derived under the assumption that both lifetime of a part and replenishment lead-time distributions are exponential.
Microorganisms specifically groups of bacteria exhibiting physiological activities of production of acids are a major cause of concern because of their ability to induce corrosion in oil field pipelines and metal systems involved in water handling. Water Injection Stations as a means of secondary recovery from existing oil producing reservoirs, are often employed in most upstream oil and gas industries to ensure replenishment of voidage, maintenance of reservoir pressure and optimization of crude emulsion throughput. In the present study, scanning electron microscopy of macroscopic orange coloured slime formations sampled from leaking valves on the flow-lines of a Water Injection Stations of Oil India Limited revealed the presence of filamentous bacterial mats in association with diatoms. The species composition of the acidic slime formations from the sampled locations reveal the possible role of acid producing iron oxidizing bacteria (IOB) like Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans in association with Gomphonema sp. in creating conditions for bio-corrosion.
In this paper, we formulate two chemostat type models of phytoplankton and zooplankton population dynamics with instant nutrient recycling to study the role of viral infection on phytoplankton. The infection is transmitted only among phytoplankton population and it makes them more vulnerable to predation by zooplankton. It is observe that the chemostat system is very stable in the absence of viral infection but the presence of viral infection make the chemostat system sensitive with respect to the grazing rate of infected-phytoplankton by zooplankton. Further, if the grazing rate is less than certain threshold the system remain stable and exhibits Hopf-bifurcation after crossing it.
A two commodity continuous review inventory system with independent Poisson processes for the demands is considered in this paper. The maximum inventory level for the i-th commodity fixed as $S_i$(i = 1,2). The net inventory level at time t for the i-th commodity is denoted by $I_i(t),\;i\;=\;1,2$. If the total net inventory level $I(t)\;=\;I_1(t)+I_2(t)$ drops to a prefixed level s $[{\leq}\;\frac{({S_1}-2}{2}\;or\;\frac{({S_2}-2}{2}]$, an order will be placed for $(S_{i}-s)$ units of i-th commodity(i=1,2). The probability distribution for inventory level and mean reorders and shortage rates in the steady state are computed. Numerical illustrations of the results are also provided.
This paper considers a make-to-order inventory-production system in which customer orders are admitted only when the number of outstanding customer orders is below a value committed by the system. We deal with general distributions for the customer order Inter-arrival, production, and replenishment lead time processes. Monotonicities of the optimal average cost with respect to these distribution parameters are established using sample path coupling arguments. When distributions are given as an exponential one, we implement a sensitivity analysis on the optimal inventory policy and show that it has monotonicities with respect to system costs using dynamic programming.
By committing to a long-term replenishment contract, buyers can purchase a product at a lower price from a supplier who is less pressured to find new customers due to the long-term contract and can charge a discounted price. We develop an analytical model from the buyer's perspective to investigate a capacity reservation contract. We are considering the system with a single supplier and a buyer. The buyer can purchases any desired amount from a spot market at a higher price in addition to the contracted amount. For such a system, we propose an algorithm to derive the optimal contract terms. The result of computational experiments shows that the algorithm finds the global optimum solution in a resonable amount of time.
Today's customer demands in supply chains tend to change quickly, variously even in a short time Interval. The uncertainties of customer demands make it difficult for supply chains to achieve efficient inventory replenishment, resulting in loosing sales opportunity or keeping excessive chain wide inventories. Un this paper, we propose an adaptive vendor managed inventory (VMI) model for a two-echelon supply chain with non-stationary customer demands using the action-reward learning method. The Purpose of this model is to decrease the inventory cost adaptively. The control Parameter, a compensation factor, is designed to adaptively change as customer demand pattern changes. A simulation-based experiment was performed to compare the performance of the adaptive VMI model.
This paper considers a periodic review, two-echelon inventory system with one central warehouse and several re-tailers facing normally distributed demand. The goal is to attain target fill rates, while the systemwide total holding costs are minimized. An important aspect of this problem is material rationing in the case of shortages. If a central warehouse has insufficient inventory to deliver all replenishment orders to retailers, all order quantities are should be adjusted according to some rationing rule. A simple but efficient rationing rule is proposed and compared with the Balanced Stock (BS) rationing as introduced by Heijden which is known to be the best rationing policy in the literature. Numerical results show that the proposed rationing rule is more cost effective than BS rationing, especially for the differences in holding costs between retailers are large.
