  • This study was conducted to examine the effects of horticultural therapy on depression and emotional balance of women with hearing impairment. Ten women with hearing impairment registered in the Mokpo branch of the Korean Association of the Hearing Impaired were selected, and participated in the horticultural therapy program composed of 14 sessions from May 15 to July 31. The horticultural therapy program consisted of 'planting tropical orchids,' 'making a dish garden,' 'making plum pickles,' 'decorating a table with flowers,' 'making a hanging pot with succulent plants,' 'making pressed flowers with hydrangea,' 'making a fan with pressed flowers,' 'making a terrarium,' 'making a flower basket,' 'making a mosquito repellent spray,' 'decorating a heart-shaped cup with flowers,' 'making a natural herbal soap,' 'making a hydrangea bouquet' and 'making watermelon salad.' The depression and emotional balance scales were used to examine the effects of the program and the pre- and post-program scores were compared. The mean value of depression statistically significantly decreased from 49.0 points before the program to 43.9 points after the program. In addition, the mean value of emotional balance statistically significantly increased from 0.3 points before the program to 2.3 points after the program. The activity of drawing a picture after each session was effective in reducing depression and improving positive emotional balance by expressing emotions through pictures. The programs preferred by women with hearing impairment included 'making plum pickles,' 'making pressed flowers with hydrangea,' 'planting tropical orchids,' 'making a mosquito repellent spray,' 'making a natural herbal soap,' and 'making watermelon salad.' In conclusion, horticultural therapy programs were effective in reducing depression and improving emotional balance of women with hearing impairment.

  • Cotton fabrics was treated with persimmon juice by padding and their dyeability and functionality were assessed including antibacterial activity and deodorization ratio. The merit of padding-based dyeing was easier color reproduction over traditional hand dyeing where various colors and color fastness to light and laundering are hard to obtain. With larger number of padding, the dyed fabrics showed deeper red-yellow colors, which had low brightness and high chromatic colors. The dyed cotton fabrics had a perspiration fastness of 4~5 rating, a rubbing fastness of 3~4 rating, and a washing fastness of 4 rating, As the number of padding and exposed time to sunlight or UV light increase, the values of K/S and ${\Delta}E$ increased and the colors became much deeper gradually. The color development had completed about 70 hours exposure to UV. Among the light sources, the dyed fabrics exposed to UV light showed deeper yellow-red color than those of exposed to sunlight. The cotton fabrics treated with premordants like Al, Cr, Cu, and Sn revealed strong yellow colors, especially the fabrics treated with Fe mordant showed greenish red-yellow colors. As the padding times of dyeing with persimmon juice increased, stiffness and water repellent property were enhanced in warp and weft directions, respectively. Also, the dyed fabrics have good antibacterial activity and deodorization.

  • This study investigated the resistance of domestic wood species used as wood members in general wood construction and Korean wood cultural properties to the termite Reticulitermes speratus using no-choice and two-choice tests. The results of the no-choice experiment confirmed that hardwood has higher termite resistance than that of softwood. In addition, R. speratus prefers softwood, including Abies holophylla, which has low density, is easy to feed on, and does not contain repellent extracts. In a two-choice test, Zelkova serrata was found to be the most termite-resistant wood species used in wooden cultural buildings. In addition, we investigated the effects of different wood extraction methods and their components on termite resistance. The cold-water extraction of softwood increased the feeding activity of termites; however, the cold-water extraction of hardwood had little effect on the feeding activity of termites. In natural environments with repeated exposure to moisture, such as rainfall, water-soluble extracts present in wood species are relatively more likely to dissolve and removed, making softwood more likely to be damaged by termites than hardwood. Untreated Quercus variabilis showed an extremely weak feeding activity of termites compared with that in other wood species; however, feeding termites with the alcohol-benzene extract of Q. variabilis had no inhibitory effect on their feeding activity. Therefore, we believe that the high density of Oriental cork oak wood inhibits the feeding activity of R. speratus. In contrast, the alcohol-benzene extracts of Z. serrata, Prunus sargentii, and Castanea crenata showed a strong inhibition of the feeding activity of termites.

  • The results of the analysis of dyed rayon fabrics treated with persimmon juice by padding are as follows. Rayon fabrics were dyed repeatedly with persimmon juice by a padding mangle for the development of dyeability. The merits of padding-based dyeing were easier color reproduction (versus traditional hand dyeing) of hard to obtain colors and color fastness to light and laundering. The add on weight increased with the number of padding times, and the color of the dyed fabrics had red-yellow colors with low brightness and high chromatic colors. Properties of fabrics treated with persimmon juice were: $2^{nd}$ level of light resistance, $4^{th}-5^{th}$ perspiration fastness levels, rubbing fastness, and $3^{rd}-4^{th}$ washing fastness levels. Dyed fabrics exposed to UV light have a deep yellow-red color that increased lightness and darken when exposed to sunlight. Rayon fabrics of a treated premordant indicated strong yellow colors, especially fabrics with Fe mordant indicated greenish red-yellow colors. The direction of the weft and warp increased and improved water-repellent qualities that increased with the number of dyeing padding times and persimmon juice; however, there was less anti-crease resistance. In addition, fabrics had good antibacterial activity and deodorization.

  • Biologically, MGK-264 (N-octyl bicycloheptene dicarboximide) acts as a synergists for insecticides mainly pyrethrins and pyrethroids. It's used extensively in combination with pyrethrin and piperonyl butoxide and also with personal insect repellent and cockroach repellents. But the toxic effect of MGK-264 in mamalians was a relatively little known therefore in this studies it was initiated to examine the toxic effect of MGK -264 in rats. For 5 weeks it administrated daily in each 250 mg and 500 mg of MGK-264 per kg of body weight in rats. 1) The body weight gain and the LYMPH (%) value in blood were observed a slight tendency to reduce in accordance with amount of dose and number treatment time. 2) The content of cytochrome P-450 and activity of NADPH-cytochrome c reductase were decreased in liver and those were observed some tendency in the kidney as liver but not significant. 3) The liver cholinesterase activity in the both 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg per kg of body weight with treated groups and the liver aniline hydroxylase in 500 mg/kg treated group were gradually decreased from 4 weeks after treated groups. In consequence it would sugested that the toxic effect of MGK-264 was low but in could offer hazard effect in liver and nervers system of rats if it was administrated move dose of MGK-264 and agumented in number of treated time.

  • This paper was focused on investigating synthetic fabrics treated with persimmon juice by padding mangle repeatedly. The merit of dyeing by pad-dry method was easier color reproduction than dyeing by immersion method. With increasing number of padding, the dyed nylon fabrics showed deeper yellow-red colors, but dyed polyester fabrics had no uniform tendency. The dyed synthetic fabrics had a 3rd grade of ligtht, 4~5th grade of perspiration fastness, 5th grade of stain washing fastness, and 3~5th grade of rubbing fastness. As the number of padding and exposed time to sunlight or UV light increase, the value of K/S and ${\Delta}E$ increased and the colors become much deeper gradually. The color development had completed about 70 hours exposure to UV light. As the padding time of dyeing with persimmon juice increased, stiffness and water repellent property were enhanced, respectively. • Repellent and acaricidal activities of eucalyptus oil, permethrin, and DEET against Leptotrombidium pallidum larvae, which are a vector transmitting tsutsugamushi disease, were evaluated under laboratory conditions using a filter paper impregnated method. The $LD_{50}$ values of eucalyptus oil and DEET were 0.025 and 0.018 $mg/cm^2$, respectively while that of permethrin was higher than 0.2 $mg/cm^2$. In the repellency test of these materials at 6.14 $mg/cm^2$, eucalyptus oil gave complete repellency, and the larvae crossed the treated zone killed. But permethrin showed 60% repellency at 9.20 $mg/cm^2$ and the mites croosed the zone were not killed. The percent repellency of DEET at 0.53 $mg/cm^2$ was 8.3 and 2.8 times higher than that of permethrin and eucalyptus oil, respectively. The acaricidal activities of emulsifiable concentrates-pump sprayers containing the eucalyptus oil as an active ingredient were assayed. The emulsifiable concentrates containing 1% and 3% eucalyptus oil showed weak mortality at 1 hour after treatment, while all ones containing more than 6% oil produced 100% activity against L. pallidum larvae. The mortality also increased as exposure time to the concentrates increase. These results suggest that the potential of eucalyptus oil highly expected to be used as a control or repellent agent against L. pallidum larvae may be very high.
