  • Precast concrete structure has many advantages, but the assembled seam will affect potentially the overall seismic performance of structure. Based on the sidewall joint located in the bottom of assembled monolithic subway station, the main objectives of this study are, on one hand to present an experimental campaign on the seismic behavior of precast sidewall joint (PWJ) and cast-in-place sidewall joint (CWJ) subjected to low-cycle repeated loading, and on the other hand to explore the effect of shape and position of assembled seam on load carrying capacity and crack width of precast sidewall joint. Two full-scale specimens were designed and tested. The important index of failure pattern, loading carrying capacity, deformation performance and crack width were evaluated and compared. Based on the test results, a series of different height and variably-shape of assembled seam of precast sidewall joint were considered. The test and numerical investigations indicate that, (1) the carrying capacity and deformation capacity of precast sidewall and cast-in-place sidewall were very similar, but the crack failure pattern, bending deformation and shearing deformation in the plastic hinge zone were different obviously; (2) the influence of the assembled seam should be considered when precast underground structures located in the aquifer water-bearing stratum; (3) the optimal assembled seam shape and position can be suggested for the design of precast underground concrete structures according to the analysis results.

  • We observed the structure of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase gene (PAL) which is one of the best studied plant defense-related genes responding to pathogen infection by producing suberin, lignin, and phytoalexins. In tomato, at least 5 different genetic loci have been identified by genomic southern blot hybridization and nucleotide sequence analyses of partially cloned gene fragments (Lee et al. 1992). However, our results suggest that two other isoforms designated as PAL X1 and PAL X2 are located on the chromosome in tomato plant. Furthermore, the preliminary results obtained from southern blot hybridization analyses of subcloned fragment digested with several restriction endonuclease indicated that PAL X1 and PAL X2 clones contain at least two copies of PAL gene and partial nucleotide sequence analyses of each subcloned fragment with the same primer taken from known nucleotide sequence of PAL5 gene indicated that they are located side by side on the same chromosome.

  • The use of continuous welded rail is increasing because of its many advantages, including vibration reduction, enhanced driving stability, and maintenance cost savings. In this work, two different types of continuous welded rails were examined to determine the influence of repeated wheel-rail contact on the crystal structure, microstructure and mechanical properties of the rails. The crystal structure was determined by x-ray diffraction, and the microstructure was examined using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Tensile and microhardness tests were conducted to examine the mechanical behaviors of prepared specimens taken from different positions in the cross section of both newly manufactured rail and worn rail. Analysis revealed that both the new and worn rail had a mixed microstructure consisting of ferrite and pearlite. The specimens from the top position of each rail exhibited decreased lamella spacing of the pearlite and increased yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and hardness, as compared with those from other positions of the rail. It is thought that the enhanced mechanical property on the top position of the worn rail might be explained by a mixed effect resulting from a directional microstructure, the decreased lamella spacing of pearlite, and work hardening by the repeated wheel-rail contact stress.

  • In this paper, the previous damage models for structures and their components under seismic repeated loading were reviewed systematically. A failure criterion for steel members under severe cyclic excitations as in strong earthquakes was described. A new approach to seismic damage assessment for steel members was proposed. This method was based on a series of the experimental and numerical investigations for steel members under very low cyclic loading. In this study, very low cyclic loading means repetitive loading, 5 to 20 loading cycles, within the large plastic range. The proposed damage assessment method was focused on the local strain history at the cross-section of the most severe concentration of deformation.

  • In this paper, we describes a system that extracts important sentences from Korean newspaper articles using automatic paragraphing. First, we detect repeated words between sentences. Through observation of the repeated words, this system compute Closeness Degree between Sentences(CDS ) from the degree of morphological agreement and the change of grammatical role. And then, it automatically divides a document into meaningful paragraphs using the number of paragraph defined by the user´s need. Finally. it selects one representative sentence from each paragraph and it generates summary using representative sentences. Though our system doesn´t utilize some features such as title, sentence position, rhetorical structure, etc., it is able to extract meaningful sentences to be included in the summary.

  • Shrink-resist effects and properties of the knitted fabrics from wool/acrylic(W/A) fiber blends were determined to find out an optimal blending ratio keeping the quality properties of wool products. The test fabrics were knitted by a weft knitting machine with all needle knitting structure ($0{\times}0$ rib) under the same knitting conditions with five different types of yarns: $W100\%,\;A100\%$, and W/A blended yarns(70/30, 50/50, 30/70). Shrinkage during repeated washing, electrostatic propensity, thermal resistance and pilling propensity of W/A knits. The shrink resistance was significantly enhanced on repeated washing of W/A knits, especially, over $50\%$ acrylic blended knits. Addition of strong physical force and alkali detergent applied in this washing experiment brought about superior effects with the low shrinkage rate although it was very severe washing conditions for wool fabrics. The results from the washing experiment implies that W/A blend knits can be machine washed at individual households with other ordinary laundry. There was some changes and variation found in thermal resistance, electrostatic propensity, and pilling. W/A 50/50 blended knits did not bring serious changes to other physical properties comparing with original wool, which helps consumers care wool knitted clothes more conveniently.

  • PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a geogrid reinforced subbase of permeable flexible pavement structures with respect to permanent deformation. METHODS : Experimental trials employing a repeated triaxial load test scheme were conducted for both a geogrid reinforced subbase material and a control specimen to obtain the permanent deformation properties based on the VESYS model. Along with this, a finite element-based numerical analysis was conducted to predict pavement performance with respect to the rutting model incorporated into the analysis. RESULTSAND CONCLUSIONS : The results of the experimental study reveal that the geogrid reinforcement seems to be effective in mitigating permanent deformation of the subbase material. The permanent deformation was mostly achieved in the early stages of loading and then rapidly reached equilibrium as the number of load applications increased. The ultimate permanent deformation due to the geogrid reinforcement was about 1.5 times less than that of the control specimen. Numerical analysis showed that the permeable, flexible pavement structure with the geogrid reinforced subbase also exhibits less development of rutting throughout the service life. This reduction in rutting led to a 20% decrease in thickness of the subbase layer, which might be beneficial to reduce construction costs unless the structural adequacy is not ensured. In the near future, further verification must be conducted, both experimentally and numerically, to support these findings.

  • The influence of the number of solution coatings on the densification of the PZT thick films was studied. PZT powder and PZT precursor solution was prepared by a sol-gel method and PZT thick films were fabricated by the screen-printing method on the alumina substrates. The powder and solution of composition were (A) PZT(80/20)/PZT(20/80), (B) PZT(70/30)/PZT(30/70) and (C) PZT(60/40)/PZT(40/60), (D) PZT(52/48)/PT. The coating and drying procedure was repeated 4 times. And then the PZT precursor solution was spin-coated on the PZT thick films. A concentration of a coating solution was 0.5 moth and the number of coating was repeated from 0 to 6. The porosity of the thick films was decreased with increasing the number of coatings and the PZT thick films with 6-times coated showed the dense microstructure and thickness of about $60{\mu}m$. A grain size was increased with increasing the coating number. All PZT thick films showed the typical XRD patterns of a typical perovskite polycrystalline structure. The relative dielectric constant of PZT thick films was improved 30-100% as the number of coatings.

  • Generally, fiber-reinforced composites have the highest possibilities of impact damages with external object collisions. Also, resulting in fatigue fracture considering the continued impact load. For the reasons mentioned above, the accurate understanding of interactions between the impact of composites and the fatigue load will be essential to understand the safety level of material structures. Furthermore, the composite materials and structures, due to the geometrical effect, vary the life in connection with the impact-fatigue. Therefore, I have reached the point that a focus of this study will be to evaluate fatigue fracture characteristics by the impacts-fatigue load of fiber-reinforced composites. Thus, in this paper, I have tried to work on impacts-fatigue load causing aspects and impact characteristics through impact-fatigue test on HTV-5Hl Black 9250 material made- structure, along with to evaluate the expected lift of real structures, the FEM analysis was carried out.
