Analysis of the Economic and Environmental Effects of Renewable Portfolio Standards with DECADES

  • This paper analyzes the environmental impact and economic effect of introducing the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) into the Korean electricity market using the DECADES (Database and Methodologies for Comparative Assessment of Different Energy Sources for Electricity Generation) model, a comparative assessment tool developed by IAEA. A bottom up approach is adopted for the evaluation of air pollutant emission and its impact of several RPS scenarios. The environmental damage costs of RPS scenarios are evaluated based on the Extern-E results and the Thailand externality study carried out by EGAT. The results of this study can be applied in determining or analyzing the national electricity policy and energy policy.

  • As interest in sustainable and eco-friendly energy sources is increasing due to various problems in the carbon society, a hydrogen economy using hydrogen as a main energy source is emerging. While the natural gas reforming method generates carbon dioxide, the water electrolysis method based on renewable energy is eco-friendly. The water electrolysis device currently being developed uses a 2 Nm3/hr class alkaline aqueous solution as an electrolyte and produces hydrogen based on renewable energy.   • Renewable energy sources play a key role in achieving carbon neutrality and zero net emissions in the power generation sector. Various efforts have been made to support the deployment of renewable energy, particularly solar photovoltaic and wind power, including policies to internalize the external cost of carbon emissions. In this study, we conducted a financial analysis of a 800 MW floating photovoltaic system and compared it with ground solar power generation. Additionally, we conducted a cost-benefit analysis that included the social cost of carbon. The findings showed that the floating photovoltaic project can meet the profitability target through an appropriately designed internalization of the social cost of carbon.

  • When renewable energy sources fluctuated severely are connected with power system, as conventional plants compensate electrical output with a slow response it causes a frequency and voltage problems. In this paper, we can show that the power system can be operated reliably by connecting with the energy storage which has a fast response time through controlling charge or discharge of energy storage.

  • The importance of renewable energy sources has been growing at a high rate as a result of being environment friendly. In particular, wind power is one of the most successfully utilized of such sources to produce electrical energy. Because of the randomness of wind speed, the reliability impact on this highly variable energy power is important aspect that needs to be assessed. In this paper, the impact on the reliability indices of wind speed correlation between two farms is considered.

  • The global electrical energy consumption is still rising and there is a steady demand to increase the power capacity, to produce, distribute and use the energy as0 efficient as possible and furthermore to set up incentives to save energy at the md-user. Two major technologies will play important roles to fulfill those targets. One is to change the electrical power production sources from the conventional, fossil (and short term) based energy sources to renewable energy resources. The other is to use high efficiency power electronics in power systems for high efficiency and high performance applications. This paper discusses both areas, in particular the power electronic application in wind power integration.

  • This paper introduces a grid-interactive storage system to operate the customers without voltage source inverters as a microgrid. The proposed storage system does not require any modification of the control scheme of the inverters existing within the customers. Novel control scheme of the grid-interfacing storage system according to its new structure ensures the seamless transition between the grid-connected and islanded operation of the microgrid.

Reduction of Green House Gases by Bioenergy Supplying in Korea (국내 바이오에너지 보급에 따른 온실가스 저감 평가)

  • Recently, the development of renewable energy sources in Korea has been needed due to climate change. One of powerful alternative energy resources to mitigate emission is to switch conventional fuels to renewable energy, such as bioenergy. In this study, current status of bioenergy conversion technology and its supply in Korea was investigate. Based on theoretical, technical and realizable potential of biomass in Korea, the amount of reduction of green house gases was estimated. The results shown that the contribution of biomass on 2020 reduction target of green house gases emission in power generation was $513,000\;tCO_2/yr$ and utilization ratio of technical potential of biomass was 6.4%. For the effective supply of bioenergy in Korea, more exact estimation of realizable potential of biomass in Korea and stable supply sources are needed.

Double-Input DC-DC Converter for Applications with Wide-Input-Voltage-Ranges

  • The output power of most facilities for renewable energy generation is unstable due to external environmental conditions. In distributed power systems with two or more sources, a stable output can be achieved with the complementary power supply among the different input sources. In this paper, a double-input DC-DC converter with a wide-input-voltage-range is proposed for renewable energy generation. This converter has the following advantages: the circuit is simple, and the input voltage range is wide and the fault tolerance is excellent. The operation modes and the steady-state analysis are examined. Finally, experimental results are illustrated to verify the correctness of the analysis and the feasibility of the proposed converter.

  • In accordance with the Carbon-Free Island by 2030 policy of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, renewable energy sources are increasing in Jejudo Island. Due to the intermittent output characteristics of wind turbines, one of the renewable energy sources, which can cause unbalanced system conditions between the demand load and the power generation of Jejudo Island. The Korea Power Exchange limits the output of wind turbines for stabilizing the Jeju power system. Therefore, this paper proposes a method to supply a limited output of Sangmyeong Wind Farm in Jeju Power system to Energy Storage System(ESS) and Water Electrolysis Device(WED). The voltage and frequency fluctuation of the Jeju power system is checked accordingly. The simulation results are performed using the PSCAD/EMTDC program.
